4th Gen Who was your starter?

My one was turtiwg in diamond.

Turtwig for Pearl and Platinum (my fave starter behind Charmander), and Chimchar for my new playthrough of Pearl (having restarted it after 4 years. That playthrough will be missed).

When I first played it when I bought the game I picked Piplup, but in my most recent playthrough I picked Chimchar because I haven't picked him before.

In Platinum, I chose Chimchar...

I chose chimchar since I didn't feel like there will be heaps of good fighting type pokemon early in the game.

The best offence is a good defense.
And it gets STAB on Earthquake.

I started with Turtwig in Pearl because it is the coolest and Piplup in Platinum because it is the second coolest.

Piplup all the way. As far as I remember I chose Chimchar for a couple of times, but I don't like it's evolutions. And I've never chosen Turtwig for some reason o_O.
