If the general idea of whatever it is appeals to me, then I'll take steps to learn whatever it might be. But almost always by experience. I find it difficult personally to learn anything fron a book, I need to see it acted out in person. As for how good I am at retaining whatever I learned, again, it deals with how much it interests me. If I learn it, and still find it interesting, it'll stay in my head for a while. If it's something I don't like, or something I learn I don't like, then don't be surprised it I go "huh?" within a day or two.
