New PETA campaign to rename fish 'sea kittens'

BY JESSICA DAMIANO |[email protected]10:44 AM EST, January 15, 2009

PETA, the group behind the "I'd Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur" campaign, has a new target -- fish eaters. In attempt to pressure consumers with guilt, the group wants fish to be rebranded as "sea kittens."

According to "Sea Kitten Facts" on its Web site, fish feel pain and affection, they enjoy being petted and they communicate with one another. "Who could possibly want to put a hook through a sea kitten?"

The rebranding strategy is similar to that used by the organization when it referred to McDonald's as "McCruelty" and Burger King as "Murder King."

The sea kitten campaign Web site, which targets children with cartoon-like illustrations and under-the-sea sound effects, includes a petition to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to "stop promoting the hunting of sea kittens" (4,263 signatures as of this writing), bedtime stories (What keeps sea kittens up at night?) and the sale of sea kitten merchandise. Kids can even design their own sea kitten, name it, attire it with a princess dress and tiara and e-mail it to friends.

"People don't seem to like fish," a notice on the site reads. "They're slithery and slimy... Of course, if you look at it another way, what all this really means is that fish need to fire their PR guy... When your name can also be used as a verb that means driving a hook through your head, it's time for a serious image makeover."

Is the group playing dirty by targeting the emotions of impressionable youngsters?

PETA is well-known for its no-holds-barred activism, including the infamous red-paint attacks on people wearing fur coats and its 2003 "Holocaust on Your Plate" campaign, in which the group compared factory farming to the Nazi genocide. Some campaigns have failed but others, like "McCruelty" and "Murder King" have raised awareness and even brought change, the group says, taking credit for new animal welfare practices at the two fast food companies.

The sea-kitten site includes a link to Fishinghurts.com, another PETA endeavor, which addresses worldwide environmental concerns about over-fishing, and several sea kitten "facts" such as "some sea kittens tend well-kept gardens" and "A University of Edinburgh study found that sea kittens can retain information that they learned up to 11 months earlier, which makes them cuter and smarter than the president of the United States!"

    While I do agree with some of PETA's stances on animal cruelty, I'm actually laughing my ass off right now after reading that article XD;

Plus, it's kind of sickening to know that they're now targeting children for recruitment.

...This is almost as retarded as their "holocaust on your plate" campaign from a few years back.

PETA should really just shut up...I swear some of those people aren't right in the head. I understand the whole animal cruelty stance, but now they are just getting ridiculous and it makes it hard for me to take them seriously. I mean, c'mon: "Seak Kittens"? XD

Sounds great to me, if it's true about them being that concious about things (The garden fact on their site, petting etc.) then I say it's plain wrong to kill 'em.

    Besides, fish tastes foul. xD

What a coincidence, I just had some sea kittens for dinner.

Seriously, though, I think those nutcases have stooped to a new low. You'd think that a simple high school course in biology would convince them that animals aren't people. There's just no reasoning for that kind of viewpoint. Besides, comparing the anatomy and intelligence of fish to cats is just idiotic. And, though I'm really not a cat person, it's a major insult to kittens.

Come on, fish are the Magikarp of the animal kingdom: They're as dumb as dirt and they aren't as well evolved as we are.

What's the world coming to? Sea Kittens? And I suppose we should call trees 'tall green people'? I think not.

When I originally saw this on the news, I said "You cannot be-" and then I said some bad things about PETA.

This is worse than when they tried to replace cow milk with breast milk in icecreams.

PETA tried to do that?? Oh dear lord, what is the world truly coming to?

I mean, its okay to protect animals which we don't actually have to hunt, but fish? We need fish to develop our brains! I don't think PETA officials have been eating many fish lately. Seriously, protecting tigers and other endangered wildlife that humans are cruelly poaching is one thing, but fish? So stupid.

    We are totally agreed here.

After reading this, I think I'll have some "sea kittens" for dinner tomorrow! And then I'll have a nice, big steak during the weekend.
How do you like to cook your sea kittens? I like to fry my sea kittens and serve them with cocktail sauce. Sea kittens are so nutritious!

Speaking of steak, you know what'd be great? If PETA told us that we had to call cows "Land Dolphins."

    xD

    Ha ha, freaking fantastic. :D

To be honest with you, PETA might get a few things done when the ASPCA doesn't, but they overdo it. Tenfold. They're a rather hypocritical organization who has an increasingly high euthanasia rate, much higher than the National Humane Society.

But seriously, sea kittens? Should we call chickens "land fish?" Or maybe we should call deer "forest whales?" *rolls eyes at PETA for the millionth time*

I think maybe it's the human breast milk in their ice cream that's getting them...

I swear that PETA becomes more extremist every time I hear something about them. Seriously, some vegetarians, Pesca-vegetarians, even eat fish; now they're just really pushing veganism.

I'll admit, the world is overfishing a bit, but there really isn't a need to try and make a huge deal of saving them. Simply cutting down on fishing licenses and restricting access to certain spawning grounds would suffice. Soon they're going to start attacking the fishing market for growing them in farms. *Sigh*

Oh, and PETA targeting children is nothing new. Have you ever seen the little package they send you if you show interest in their group? It's just full of little stickers and such with cute little cartoon chickens blazoned with the slogan, "I am not a nugget."
(Admittedly though, that is a funny slogan. XD)

    Ahahaha. XD

I really dislike this move. D: I love "fish" (not as food, but the name) Now "sea kittens"? What's next?

*sighs* PETA. v_v I love what they stand for, but the lengths they go to...

After I read that part about chickens and nuggets you said, it makes me want to go to McCruelty before work tomorrow and get me a 10 piece.

And about the cartoon chickens, yes you are not a nugget. You are a leg, a wing, a thigh, a breast and crispy strips. XD

If we don't fish for 'sea kittens', their numbers will be out of control. Sharks are already endangered, and they alone can't keep the numbers of fish down. There will be an explosion in the number of fish, and there will be problems with the sea getting crowded.
