  • Even in HGSS the slot machines will be disabled in European versions.
I asked Nintendo about the removed function of the slot machines and the answers is following:

    Sehr geehrter Kunde

    Translation:
    Dear customer,
So far, the mentioned games (HeartGold and SoulSilver) aren't released yet, thus there are no confirmed information to the game content.
Because of EU legislation the slot machines will be without functions in future Pokémon games.
    King regards from Großostheim

  • So same thing in this version as well eh? Did this start with D/P/Pt? or has this happened since the original GB/GBC games? I don't see why they ban the slot machines. Its not like it's anything illegal or bad. Its earning coins for playing pokemon games in the slots. i think They took it too far in Euro by taking them out.

  • oh gawd. I think Nintendo of Europe have took stupidity to a whole new level. It's completely unfairr. it really means that all the other countries get a little more than europe do. Congrats Nintendo. Congrats for winning idiots of the year 09/10.

You know, I would say it is pretty dampening to not have the game slots available for the Euro version of HeartGold and SoulSilver like they did in Platinum. Except, you really cannot blame Nintendo for disabling the slots for the Euro version. If the country itself has made Gambling illegal and doesn't want any way to display it to younger or older people, then what else can they do but follow the law. I mean, honestly, it sucks, it really does, but I'm sure if Nintendo could have had it available, then they would. Except, Europe doesn't want to allow gambling anymore, and to keep themselves out of trouble GameFreak and Nintendo are simply following the law, but still keeping their industry alive by releasing the games. If you really want to get the slots though, I'd suggest buying the remakes internationally. There isn't much we can do really if they continue this, and we can't say to blame Pokémon following the law either.

  • Lucky for me I'm in Canada :)

I guess people will just have to order it across from the US to Europe, and not buy it directly at a European game store.

  • Why are people angry at Nintendo of Europe? It's not they who are at fault - they could potentially be prosecuted under European law. It's the politically correct, 'nanny state' organisation of the EU that is the cause for this. As much as they've done to help stabilise the mainland European economy and unite the continent (cue -rep and hate from the kind of idiots who vote BNP because BRITUN R TEH BEST), I think it is a little extreme to remove this sort of function from a Pokémon game.

However, I can see why the legislation is enforced. Face it, gambling is encouraged within the game; you can only get certain TMs from the Game Corner, for example. This can lead to a form of addiction, in trying to win a large amount of coins. We all know that it's a lot easier and simpler just to buy coins in bulk when you want a prize, but the easily-impressionable minds of today's youth who are mollycoddled from birth could easily find themselves sucked in. It's a tenuous example, I'll concede, but the EU wants to cut down on the amount of people who gamble - it's understandable when you see the sad kind of people who sit in pubs for hours on end, wasting their money on fruit machines (which are, essentially, what a player would have been playing on in the Game Corner).

If you want some figure to be mad at, go and research this legislation and who passed it. Don't bad mouth Nintendo of Europe for abiding by the law.

    Oh well.

It's a shame, but it's hardly the worse thing, right?

  • So, what'll happen now? Would this be happening to every future games that'll be released to Europe? I understand now why Nintendo and Gamefreaks are doing this, to get out of future troubles, but would the Slot Machine in a Pokémon game convince kids to go gambling? I find that really doubtful.

I don't want to sound racist or biased but I think it's cause of Germany's little anti video game troll parade. Seriously they are blaming video games for the recent outbreaks in violence and more so on this on case where its clear that the father taught the child how to use a weapon. The scapegoat thing with video games is actually getting pretty out of hand and all. Now everything unfortunately is getting harmed.

You know, if this really has to happen all the time, then I'd think it would be time for a change. It isn't fair that a group of countries gets to miss out on something that can be vitally important for the game. I'd suggest that in the future Nintendo and GameFreak work something out to replace the Game Corner from future games. I mean honestly, there are a lot of other good events they can place within the game other than slot machines, but still award the players with the fun of it all. I mean with all ideas that fans have, I'm sure GameFreak has the possibility of thinking something up. It isn't fair one country gets to miss out on something, while other places gets to enjoy it. So, to make it fair, replace the whole concept with something new, enjoyable, and won't be rules out because of the law.

I wouldn't know much about this. It may be a factor, and it may not. Whether it is or not, Europe has formed the law for "No Gambling" and there isn't mucht that can be done unless it is altered once more. I live in America, so sadly I don't have any news too frequently on what happens in other countries sadly.

That reminds me of this dumbass Republican (no offense to Republicans) I met that said "I'm completely grateful for censorship and the PTC!"

In any case, it IS really sad to see incompetent parents willing to blame anything and anyone but themselves when their children go bad.

It is sad. Parents are supposed to be the ones teaching their kids right from wrong and not use work as an excuse.

You're right. It's not fair for Europeans to miss out on something because of the laws. The game corner was useful in the old games because they allowed you to get TMs and Pokemon such as Dratini instead of waiting until you're at Dragon's Den. If the drama over game corner is really that big a deal, then maybe Nintendo/Game Freak should make it into an arcade. (Similar to Platinum's wifi plaza.) You can win the mini games and get prizes that way. (Instead of an upgrade on your touch toy, they can give you a Dratini egg.) They can even keep the parade at the end. They should replace the game corner with something else that's fun so other countries don't feel left out.

  • Arrrgh, I hate being german >_> I tell you if I should ever decide to start a killing spree it won't be inside a school but inside the Bundestag (forgive me that incedibly stupid comment >> ). Well, I'm pretty sure they took it out because gambling is only allowed if you're 18 and over (this is right isn't it? There are casinos and everything around here o.O I'm following the news why wouldn't I know something about something like that? ). By the way, is what they disabeled the person who was supposed to give the player the coin case? (one can obviously not gamble without it) That would explain why I couldn't find it in Platinum (arg, I wasted my time >< ).
And yeah, it's not racial at all, germany tries ideed to blame games for everything, this is because we have only ancient politicans who've never seen a game themselves plus, they're to lazy to look for the real problems our youth seems to have.
However now I've finally a good reason to import that game (curse you europe -.-)
But I kind of don't get why they came up with that out of nothing. Did some Pokemon players go insane because they used the gambling hall? Did I miss something essential o.O?
    Can someone enlighten me xD?

I'm preparing the secret action to destroy the EU since years.
    Lemme help ya! XD
