A space-themed, talking Hallmark graduation card is being pulled from store shelves because of the card's reference to a black hole.
But members of the Los Angeles NAACP say the message sounds like "black *****" in the card's audio recording. That's how they hear it, and they say it's racist, KABC-TV in Los Angeles reported.
"That was very demeaning to African-American women when it made reference to African-American women as *****s, and at the end it says 'watch your back,'" said Leon Jenkins of the Los Angeles NAACP.
The Hallmark card reads, "Hey world, we are officially putting you on notice," before playfully touting the ambitious future of the new graduate.
Characters known as "Hoops" and "Yoyo" banter on: "And you black holes, you are so ominous. Watch your back."
Hallmark calls the outrage a misunderstanding, claiming that the space theme emphasizes the power the graduate has to take over the universe, even energy-absorbing black holes.
"The intent here is to say that this graduate is not afraid of anything," explained Hallmark spokesman Steve Doyal.
Apparently, NAACP members heard something different.

    what do you think?

I think it is way to sensitive. Should we not be allowed to name anything black, as to not offenend anyone? I guess no pokemon black.

Personally, I think that if it sounds like...The other word, then it should be taken off the shelves, whether it were black, white, yellow, red, or any other colors possible.

So yeah, I don't think it's over-reacting, simply because, IMO, it's taking off something for the possibility of mishearing a word.

A big corporation should have enough foresight to design things without having to deal with the misunderstandings that come with it because of people being over sensitive and stupid about it.

Well I remember that some time ago, it was scientifically proven that, holes are indeed black.
Nooo! What are you doing, brain? Don't think that way! T_T

Also, where can I get these cards? They sound awesome!

Any college student crying at this should be ashamed. This is lolworthy.

    Fox crap.

    If it's black, it's black.
We're not going to call black pens something different. Srsly.

You can view anything as racist, sexist, elitist, or homophobic these days.

Meh, but it's not Fox's fault. Odds are, this is one of the many minor articles used to fill space. Everyone covers idiocy like this.

Especially Cirno News Network. Bad Apple...

Also, because you saw what I did there in that Giant Unnamed Catfish Thread...
Am I the only one who thinks it's funny that Touhou has characters called Lily White and Letty Whiterock, but only one FANMADE character named Lily Black?

This is not the first time something like this has happened. Back in 2008 Dallas County Commissioner Kenneth Mayfield, who is white, stated that the central collections "has become a black hole". This statement caused outrage from two black officials on the board with Judge Thomas Jones demanding an apology. The people who declare the term black hole racist need to take astronomy 101.

Next thing you know, they'll be asking the scientific world to change the term to "area of absolute darkness" because you can't accidentally say anything rude off that.

It's things like this that creates division between races instead of unity. It perpetuates racism.

Yeah, there is a slight difference between avoiding racist remarks, usually insulting, and considering that everything, even scientific terms that have been used for decades, are now racist because they could be misheard in a certain way.

There are over a billion more important things than that going on right now.

I'm not sure I agree with this. One time called this guy Red then he said "**** you man! Stop insulting us redneck!". Hell I called him Red because his name was Red. o.O

I can't wait for the day I have a house in Mars with Masada-sensei. * 3* OUR HOUSE WILL BE PRETTY AND BLACK AND WE'LL LULZ AT THE 'OFFENSIVENESS' OF IT. 8DDD

Political correctness has gone completely mad over the past few years.
It is so stupid that a CORRECT TECHNICAL TERM, 'black hole', is to be considered racist. This is one of the major things that annoy me in this world. We aren't allowed to say 'black board', only chalk board.
Sorry, is the board not black? Oh, but look at this, you can say 'white board' because it referees to white people.

I am not being racist, but I just hate the fact that the government seems to please the Non-English crowd, more than actual residents of the country.

It's sad that this is actually true. We had white boards at school and called them as such. But we referred to the black board as... a chaulk board. *Sigh*
