    Focus Shift [PG +16]

"I let my focus shift, that's all there is to it. Now you try."
    Plot:

Up until now I, no, we have been in the dark about what we really are, what we were created for, and what we were to become. At this pivotal point in time everything has been made clear and I am kicking myself for not realising this earlier. Our job would have been far easier if we had taken the time to understand our own histories. But, nonetheless we have failed; scattered far and wide as the growing darkness spreads further. I can only hope that we have enough time left to stop this before the world ends, I already fear it might be too late.

Newton's law of physics states that "every action has an equal and opposite reaction." We see this happening right before our eyes day after day; it is even scattered and cemented within history. The story goes that when Arceus hatched from the golden egg, he stabilised the world, he created beings in his image, and we knows these as Pokémon. Newton's law dictated a reaction and we humans were born into this world.

On the other hand, a differing force was created, one that was both equal in power and opposite in form to Arceus and all of his creation. Dubbed numerous names now lost in the pages of history, this force conflicted with that of Arceus and soon all of creation was close to being wiped out.

Then, in a brilliant spark of tactical ingenuity, Arceus created beings that were human in appearance, but with only half a soul inside them – these were the first shifters. A reaction occurred and Catalysts were created, Pokémon with half a soul from the anti-force. These two beings were prefect mirrors of each other, bonded by halved souls and blessed with special abilities.

These initial Shifters and Catalysts banded together and saved the world from total obliteration. They locked the opposing force in a place where nothing could go, in a place where nothing could look; This place was the Aether Realm.

Now the bonds that once shackled this force have broken and its cage cracked, allowing for it to begin again. What it had initially set out to do those many years ago may actually come to fruition, yet many years have passed since the first ones defeated it, they no longer live and much has changed.

So join me now my brothers and sisters, my fellow Shifters, heed my Call. Our time to fight is fast approaching and there is much we must do. Maybe we are the ones that will finish what the first ones set out to do, and hopefully before it is too late.

    Terms:

    Catalyst:
Only select species of Pokémon have the chance to be a catalyst and even within those species, it is very rare for a Catalyst to exist. Like their Human counterparts, Catalysts cannot shift between the Contemporary Realm and the Aether Realm but it is heavily suspected that they live in both Realms simultaneously. They essentially act as the fulcrum for their Human counterparts to both enter and exit the Aether Realm. Catalyst are said to be the 'other half' of a Shifter's soul, and as such it is by this connection that Shifters and Catalysts can find each other. Catalysts are often very loyal and very protective of their Shifter and will do anything to protect them. Catalysts are usually born at the same time as their Shifter but sometimes no more than one day before or after.

    Shifting:
This is the act where a select person (called a Shifter) uses his/her Pokémon (called a Catalyst) as a fulcrum to essentially shift from the Contemporary Realm into the Aether Realm and back. When shifting, a Shifter's consciousness is moved from the Contemporary Realm where it would otherwise permanently exist, to the Aether Realm. In the Aether Realm, normal people are seen as ghostly images, speculated as 'souls' whilst a Shifter sees their body and other Shifters' bodies as what they would be like in the Contemporary Realm. Shifting is seen as the only way (currently) to get from one realm to the other, excluding the portal to the Distortion World in Turnback Cave, Sinnoh.

    Shifters:
Shifters are people, who with the help of a Pokémon know as a "Catalyst", can shift between the Contemporary Realm and the Aether Realm. They are very rare and make up less than 1% of the world's total population. Shifters usually become aware of their powers at the age of fifteen, and this usually involves a shift into the Aether Realm with their Catalyst. Sifters are usually born at the same time as their Catalyst but no more than one day before or after. Unlike Catalysts, Shifters only exist in the one realm, using their shifting abilities to jump from one realm to the other.

    Calling/The Call:
The Call; or the act of Calling is the instance where a Shifter sends a message through the Aether Realm to other Shifters out there. The Call can be received in the Aether Realm and in the Contemporary Realm but can only be sent from the Aether Realm. If not directed specifically to someone (by visualising them with the Shifters mind whilst sending them call), it ends up spreading throughout the Aether Realm (much like ripples on a lake when a stone is dropped in the water). Catalysts are usually the ones who catch the signal transmission due to their simultaneous existence in both realms, and act as transceivers; catching the signal of the call and transmitting it to their human through the bond that they share. This transmitting is usually done through both Catalyst and Shifter locking eyes. The Call can come in different forms; for most it is a series of images relating to the message, but for some individuals I can be different.

    Places:

    Aether Realm:
This realm exists close to our conscious Contemporary Realm. It mostly exists as a grey, hazy world where buildings and nature become transparent and shimmering, ghostly images of people and Pokémon appear; this is speculated to be their Spirit, hence the name of the realm. There is no weather in the Aether Realm, this includes wind. Pokémon known as Catalysts are said to live in both the Contemporary Realm and Aether Realm simultaneous but this too is highly speculated. When moving from the Human Realm to the Aether Realm, Shifters take their bodies with them meaning that when they Shift out of the Aether Realm into the Human Realm, they effectively teleport somewhere else. There is no sound in the Aether Realm however it has been noted that both Pokémon and humans can talk in this realm through some sort of telekinesis. It has been speculated that in some cases, people have been able to converse with their Pokémon, however there is no evidence to back this theory up. It is sometimes confused with the Distortion World of Giratina, due to its oddly different environment, but it is something completely different.

    Contemporary Realm:
The realm that we see around us; this realm holds our consciousness' as well as our physical bodies. Here is where humanity and Pokémon have flourished and lived. Most people here are not able to shift between the realms; possibly even less than 1% of the world's population can 'shift' into other dimensions or possesses knowledge of other existing dimensions. The Contemporary Realm is where our physical bodies exist, where as the Aether Realm is said to be where our 'souls' exist, moving in relation to where our physical bodies move. When travelling to the Aether Realm, a Shifter's body is thought to go into some sort of 'Limbo", waiting for the Shifter to reappear which is effectively teleportation.

  • It's back? xO Wow, I need to at least try to get a spot this time. xD There are still journeys and all that, right? If not, then I'll change the history.

    *Shifter:

    Name: Miharu Mizushima

    Age: 17

    Gender: Female

    Appearance:

Physical: Miharu has black hair, long but usually in a ponytail to get out of her eyes. She has black eyes which have been called unnerving when she stares at people. She usually uses that to her advantage. She weighs 130lbs and she is 5'7". She has very definite muscles, lower and upper body from her various trainings in various martial arts. Her ethnicity is Asian (Japanese).

Clothing: She usually wears a black t-shirt. Plain, no design. She also wears long black pants, nonrestrictive and it cuts off before the ankle. She wears black boots, knee boats that are usually under her pants. Although, when she is traveling to the
Aether Realm, she wears sneakers. Black, of course.

    Personality:
Miharu isn't very trustworthy and is very cold and calculating. She normally doesn't care about people, but if a pokemon is in trouble, she would always do what she could to help them. She is very sarcastic and curses frequently, though it's mostly inwardly and when the situation calls for it, outwardly. She hates it when people brood about their life, especially if their life isn't bad and she also despises arrogance. She's very quiet though, but at other times she isn't afraid to speak her mind.

After you have gain her trust, she will test you to see if you would stay her friend by annoying and testing your patience (i.e., calling you names you don't like, adding "-chan" or "-kun" to the end of your name, not giving you food, etc.,). If you have managed to gain her complete trust, which only her mother and Kaida have done, then she will act exactly as she did before. Only much more gentler. She loves pokemon, and if you had harmed them or tried to harm them, along with her loved ones, you will perish. In reality, she's a very contradicting person with a very "unique" personality.

History: At ten, she went on her pokemon journey from Pallet Town. She hadn't needed a pokemon from Professor Oak, since she had her Espeon since she was born. Along the way, she had captured a Gyarados, a Dratini who is now a Dragonite, and an Eevee who is now a Jolteon. She had defeated all eight gym leaders and competed at the Indigo Plateau and managed to go into the top sixteen before losing to another skilled trainer with more experience. She went to Johto after losing and gotten all eight gym badges, but did not compete in the Indigo League again. It was there she gotten a Togepi with Extrasensory who is now a Togekiss.

After that, she traveled to the Hoenn region where she did not capture any more pokemon for her team. She won all eight gym badges and competed in their league. She had managed to make it into the top four, but lost and as she was in fourth place, she was unable to challenge the elite four and Wallace. Afterward, she went to Sinnoh where she had gotten a Riolu which is now a Lucario. She then, not surprisingly, beat all eight gym leaders and competed in their tournament. This time, at age fourteen, she won the whole thing. She challenged the Elite Four and Cynthia, and had managed to beat the Elite Four but barely lost to Cynthia. After that, she decided to settle down in Pallet Town and open an optional gym which was approved by the pokemon board. After being purposely pulled into the Aether realm when she was fifteen, she periodically check in on the Aether Realm.

She then traveled to the other regions and finally managed to win a tournament (Sinnoh) at the age of fourteen. She then came back to Pallet Town and asked the board if she could open a gym there and it was agreed she could, although it was an optional gym. You did not have to go there in order to be allowed to go in the tournament. She stayed in Pallet Town, fending off some challengers and training.

Her family is just her mother and her sister. She doesn't have a father as he abandoned them when Miharu was two and her sister, Mika, was nineteen. Her mother, Yuugao, got money from the father every month for food and housing as she didn't work. Mika is on a journey to see every legendary pokemon there is, but occasionally drops by to visit Miharu and Yuugao.

    RP Sample:

    Spoiler:

Notes: During her journey, she had trained in multiple martial arts and is in black belts in all of them. She has a speaking disorder (can't use can't, don't, wouldn't, it's, its, etc., and cannot use you to refer to others. Like, "Hey, you there!")

    *Catalyst:

    Name:

    Full name: Seishin-teki shokubai

    Nickname: Sei

    Gender: Female

    Species: Espeon

Personality: Sei is very calm and usually plans things out before jumping into battle. Even though she knows that Miharu can take care of herself, her mind goes in a frenzy and she attacks anyone who tries to harm Miharu.

  • Still working on my SU... I had it almost finished when my computer randomly went back a page and deleted it all >_<

For the record, my character's name is Jason, and his Catalyst will be a female Mightyena named Sasha, if that's okay.

Will be up later tonight or tomorrow morning. Sorry for the delay.

  • This sounds complicated...brain is trying to understand...OK, I got it. I guess complicated = fun. If not, complicated = annoying. I believe this will be the fun complicated.
May I reserve a spot for now? I do not believe my SU will be at its peak when i'm this tired.

This sounds like Shakugan no Shana and Inception put together. Never the less, since no one seems to be posting on my thread anymore, I'll join here!

I also have a question! Is there a specific reason that the Pokémon you have chosen have been? The only reason I can fathom is they look quite sinister Pokémon. In any case, would you reason to adding another to your list (Zoroark)? If not, Houndoom is cool for me.

    SOLVED LOL

    FINISHED AND STUFF!!

    SHIFTER:
    >NAME: Harley Evita Belward
    >AGE: Nineteen
    >GENDER: Female

    >APPEARANCE: Harley is shorter and skinnier than the average pre-teen, standing at 162cm and weighing 49kg. Her hair, recently cut, is a dark brown and is brushed towards the right, with her fringe sitting just above her eyes (hair in her eyes is just an annoying). Her skin is not ghost white, just not tanned since the sun seems to be some kind of mystery to her. She is fairly flat chested (probably due to her lack of fat and muscle) and quite weak when it comes to physical confrontation. Her favourite feature of her appearance is her eyes, which reflect her Heterochromia with her left eye being a bottle, murky green and her right eye a chocolate brown.

    >CLOTHING: Her attire is a little different to most people. She doesn't like to stick with the latest trends (those kind of things bore her anyways) and tries to create her own style. Her favourite coat (a hoodie) is one she fashioned herself, using bits of material she found from all sorts of clothing she found. The main base is purple and the arms have been cut off (at different lengths) and have been replaced with black and white horizontally striped material, as well as random bits and pieces sown on as well. Under that, she has a light blue singlet top (she pulls at it now and again and contemplates it's blandness). Her jeans are quite rugged from overuse and she won't go anywhere without a pair of boots or converse shoes on, most likely boots.

    >PERSONALITY: Harley has only ever had small friend groups. She tends to keep to herself at most times with only Pokémon or close friends as companions and even then she can, at times, find them annoying. She's a self taught artist and spends the most of her time cooped up in her room either drawing, painting, sketching or just doodling. She's also seen as a distant person, often drifting off mid-conversation. She bores easy. She hates it, but it's just how she is. Her only real interests seems to be drawing, her Pokémon and history of the universe. These three things always seem to connect in someway, with the history of the universe being associated to Pokémon and her drawing said Pokémon and historical events they tie themselves to.

Harley has never been a fighter. She's quite weak and always requires a Pokémon around her to keep her safe. She lacks confidence of herself to do anything to help herself or others, unless it involves next to no effort. Even in the stickiest of situation, she abandons her introvert personality and sticks to anyone that could help her in anyway, even if that person is smaller and seemingly weaker than her. She really hates not being independent but it's not something she's about to change since she holds some kind of fear or avoidance of becoming independant. It's another reason why she still lives with her parents.

    >HISTORY: Up until recently, Harley has lived quite a ordinary and boring life. She was born into a perfectly average family, with a younger sister (four years younger) and an older brother (two years older), Serah and Desmond. Her family have all had their quirks, her mother a glass blower, her father an expert in the violin (yet he works as a accountant), her sister a culinary legend in the making and her brother a landscape designer. She grew up in Ecruteak City, living off the histories that filled the city there. She often would wander off to a library, explore the towers (Morty would accompany her to Bell Tower on the odd occasion) and sketch whatever she wanted at the bottom of Burned Tower.

Harley and her catalyst first connected when they were both very young. At the age of three (although she barely remembers it), her parents took her and Desmond to Kanto for the first time. Staying in Celadon, Harley noticed a Zoroa following them as they walked through the city over the week they stayed there. They went home via the train and the Zoroa followed them all the way back. After then, Harley caught glimpses of the Zoroa, standing at a distance, watching her as she went on with her life. After she turned 10 and was given her first Pokémon (a female Riolu named Tarth, now a Lucario) by her parents and went on a small journey, only venturing to Blackthorn and back. During then, she didn't "catch" the Zoroa per sé, it merely walked into her possession.

After learning about the lores of the Lake of Rage and Blackthorn City, she returned home, catching a Pidgey (male, named Appa and has not evolved since) on the way.

Her first shift was a few weeks shy of her 14th birthday. Down in the bottom of Burned Tower joined by Ceri (now a Zoroark), Tarth and Appa, she sketched away at a Pokémon she was sure she had seen, both in a history book and a glimpse of it leaving Burned Tower. Trying to remember its appearance, Harley was concentrating as hard as she possibly could, racking her brain for something she had forgotten. Ceri barked loudly, distracting Harley and shifting her focus to her Pokémon. As her eyes locked with Ceri's, the scenery around to changed. The room went suddenly dark and saturated and her other Pokémon turned to ghostly images. The vision lasted only half a minute, but it was clear in her mind what she had seen. Since then, she has had it happen frequently although she doesn't know what it means or what to call it or where it came from, but if anyone was to look at her art or her sketchbooks, they would see as she sees it.

    >SAMPLE: You've seen me in the steampunk thread, right? (which you haven't posted in for a while, by the way ): )

    CATALYST:
    >NAME: Ceri
    >GENDER: Male
    >SPECIES: Zoroark

    >PERSONALITY: Ceri is a curious Pokémon, always seeking new discoveries and looking for answers. Digging around and searching for clues for Harley is what he loves and does best. When he and Harley are alone, he often shape shifts into legendary Pokémon found in books for her, although he can never reach their full sizes, full detail or even try to mimic their regal demeanor and his illusions have lasted, at best, 15 minutes. He also also enjoys the fact that Harley can't stand to be completely alone; it gives him an excuse to stay around her all the time.

  • *Shifter:
    >Name: Jason McBarron

    >Age: 19

    >Gender: Male

    >Appearance:
Physical: Jason is an average height of approximately 5"9, if slightly more. His skin is an olive tone which often seems to verge on pale - this could in part be contributed to the contrast with his dark hair, falling just long enough to sweep his brows. He is quite the attractive boy, with an honest, if crooked smile and a hooked earring on the left side. His body is of a decent build and he is able to run quite fast. He is also somewhat strong, but not enough so to have any real significance. Although a rather common boy among many, his "claim to fame" are his deep green eyes, which seem to pierce through the protective layer and into the soul. But they are not cold; there is a kindness behind them.

Clothing: On an average day Jason prefers to grab the first shirt that he sees; he often sports a wide assortment of t-shirts and long sleeves of various colors and brands without much thought. However, when nervous, he tends to become more fashion conscious, picking out his clothing with care. It is a near certainty that a pair of generic jeans will be involved in the picture. Although not much concerned about clothing, Jason is overly concerned with his shoes. He owns a wide assortment of color combinations and brands, from which he chooses carefully every morning if not away from home. If it amuses him, Jason has been known to sport a hat, usually black or white and cocked at a jaunty angle. If overcome on a particular day with that sense of "childish" giddiness, he may even match the color of his shoes to his hat - this phenomenon is more a humorous choice then a fashionable one.

    >Personality: When first approached by a stranger, Jason appears to be a rather kind and considerate soul, if somewhat cocky. Despite appearances, he possesses the patience of a god in most instances; however, even gods fall from grace and there are times when Jason has been known to snap and become harsh. In almost all cases the culprit involves the mistreatment of pokemon or nature in some way - small displays will not set him off, but it can be betted upon that it will be applied to his views on the individual as a whole.

Jason's calling in life is to lighten the mood, and he has a tendency to make jokes that may not be particularly appropriate to the situation. However, he possesses the ability to remain serious in times of great stress or upset. He has a way with most pokemon, as they can often sense his genuine sincerity. Although a 19 year old boy, Jason is somewhat clueless when it comes to the opposite sex and not particularly interested in dating one of the strange creatures - he'd rather be on an adventure with friends or interacting with pokemon. Consequently, he tends to have more male friends than female. Jason is a good listener and tends to give more honest advice then comforting - something that had gotten him in hot water multiple times. He has an irrational fear of heights.

*The reason that, although 19, I refer to Jason as a "boy" instead of a "man" is that I don't view him as quite a "man" yet. He is more of a "young adult".

    >History: Jason was quite fortunate as a child. He was brought up in a warm home surrounded by love, and consequently tends to assume that everyone had the same. From the moment he was brought onto the farm he has had pokemon around him, as his parents were small-time breeders. It was in this setting that Jason was taught how to properly approach pokemon and the importance of body language - often he will subconsciously attempt to use these lessons on humans with minimal success. The only dark smudge in Jason's past is his neighbor, a hard, cruel man who owned a number of Ponyta that he attempted to breed for the racetrack. The man's methods were harsh and inefficient and as such none of his prodigies made it big - often they were beaten or left without proper care, much to the dismay of a young Jason. As a small child he would often creep into the barn and sit with the beautiful pokemon, hands folded in his lap. They tolerated his presence and in fact enjoyed it, for he did not try to touch them and only offered his silent comfort. When he was 10, the man sold his property and moved away with his pokemon, a kind elderly couple taking his place.

Jason's Catalyst did not find him until he was almost 16. He was in the midst of his chores around the facility when he felt the prick of unseen eyes on the nape of his neck. Turning quickly, he was forced to search the surrounding landscape until he spotted a lone Mightyena in the distance, staring back at him. His first thought was for the young pokemon, yet somehow he knew that they were safe from the unexpected visitor. Over a period of four days the pokemon continued to return, sometimes closer, sometimes farther away, watching over him as he moved around the facilities. Finally, at the close of the fourth day, Jason attempted to approach the Mightyena. At first he was frightened and adopted a defensive stance, but as he got closer something softened within him. By the time he was close enough to take in the pokemon's eyes, the same color as his, he began to feel a tug. At this point, the Mightyena stood up from its seated position. After a few more feet, Jason broke into a run; the pokemon did the same. By the time they reached each other, the two greeted one another as old friends. From that moment on, the newly named Sasha and Jason were inseparable.

    >RP Sample: It was there again: though the Mightyena never made anything threatening gestures, its constant gaze unnerved Jason McBarron. The pokemon always kept its distance - one day, it had been almost an indistinguishable speck on the horizon. Jason had been worried that it would attempt to attack the younger pokemon, yet it had never made a move to set foot on the property, apparently content with its daily visual. When the fourth day had arrived, Jason had made his decision - he worried for the pokemon's health if it stayed unmoving in the sun all day without going for food or water, and wondered where it slept at night. He would find out what it wanted.

Hands trembling slightly, Jason walked into the storage shed and felt around in the darkness of the inside for a pair of sturdy gardening gloves. They were his mother's - his parents had gone away on business for the week and left Jason in charge, as many of the pokemon had not hatched yet for the season and work was minimal.

Jason hesitated at the property line, and then began walking at a rather slow pace towards the Mightyena, hands held up in a gesture of caution and surrender. As he drew nearer, he realized with a jolt the quality of the specimen. The Mightyena was large, with powerful shoulders and chest. It was also a female.

The pokemon continued to fix him in her stare, and it was then that Jason noted the deep green eyes, so much like his own. His pace quickened absentmindedly, and at this point the pokemon stood up on all fours, though it did not run away. Jason was close enough now to make out the Mightyena's thick black and grey fur, and distractedly noted a small scar on the pokemon's left ear, slicing the tissue slightly. Subconsciously, his hand rose to finger his own ear on the same side, feeling the hard earring that was pierced through it.

There was a sharp tug, almost unnoticed at first, which began in Jason's chest. After a few more feet, the pull became stronger, until it was almost unbearable. The Mightyena and the boy stared at each other - a connection was made. Suddenly, the two were running at each other as fast as they could.

They met in a few more steps, the Mightyena leaping into Jason's arms as he was overcome with laughter and happiness. Due to her weight, he was soon forced to put the pokemon down, but it did not dampen their joyful reunion. It was strange indeed - though Jason had only seem Mightyena from a distance, he felt as if he had known this one all his life.

(This is pretty short, just a little piece about when they met each other. If you need more, just let me know.)

    *Catalyst:
    >Name: Sasha

    >Gender: Female

    >Species: Mightyena

    >Personality: Although quite intimidating, Sasha does not possess a "mean" soul. At times she will allow herself to be petted, as children tend to love her long, silky fur, yet more often than not she will find refuge with Jason. If ever unable to be by Jason's side, she will pace relentlessly and reject all offers of food or water until she starves to death. Unfortunately, she does not have the relentless patience of her partner, and can often be short tempered and cranky. However, she adores Jason in every conceivable way and hangs on to his every word with her piercing green gaze, the same stare she once fixed upon him as he worked - one of complete attention with no thought for anything else. Sasha is not a playful pokemon and prefers to relax close to her partner's side. She is extremely talented at sensing the intentions of those around her, though she is not a mind reader and therefore not perfect. She does not particularly like other females, whether they be pokemon or human.

    ---

Hope this is okay, it is very mind numbing to try and write something again when you loved it the first time. Impossible to get it just the same. >_< But I must say, I am very excited for this roleplay!

  • Daym. How about Zoroa? Or do they have to be fully evolved?

Yea sorry, fully evolved. actually scratch that, I'll allow for Zoroark to be used as a shifter, it takes place of reparados.

@Michaela: Personality is too short, needs another paragraph and history is a little too short clothing and appearance are just acceptable, Pending.
@Skymin: Looking good, just waiting on Catalyst, Pending.
@Nakuzami: Like Michaela, personality and history are a little too short for my liking, clothing and appearance are just acceptable, Pending.
@Zena70: History is a little short, Pending, but otherwise good.
@Stormer: looks alright, but history is too short and could you please add a little more to personality>, Pending.

@Everyone, your catalyst is the other half of your character, they would have been around your character by the first year of life. Your character also first went to the Aether Realm at 15, you need to add that too.
I shall have my own SU up soon.

  • Edited, finally. Fleshed the history and the personality out. Let me know if I have to change more.

Since Espeon is a psychic type, would it be okay that Miharu and Espeon would be allowed to talk in the normal realm, although it would be harder for them to do so? Like, having to really concentrate.

I'm not Ichi, but yes he should have known Sasha beforehand. Actually, probably he would have grown up with Sasha. XD I remember that from the last RP, although I didn't get to join it since it died. o.0

  • Yep, all catalysts should have grown up with their respective Shifters.
Sorry Michaela, no telepathic communication in normal realm.
    Zena, there is no rush.
@Michaela, Skymin and Nakuzami: All Accepted.

For the telepathic communication; Awwww...Oh well.

For the acceptance; YAY! The original one was actually the first RP that I tried a SU for. XD So, I'm glad that I actually got a part in it now. x3
