    Mine was getting hot aswell...
But, i've just bought new Computer 4 days ago! ^_^
it's got dual core 3.0 GHz intel processor, 4 GB RAM DDR3, and the graphic card is ATi Radeon 5500 Sapphire ! GB.
    I'm very content with it.
And it's remarkebly cool, yet very silent! The vent must be very good...

So my mum ordered my 5770.
    :P
Someone's going to be very happy. I considered buying another one to Crossfire mine, but the power draw is going to go up.
If that's in Celsius, he could have melted it.
Yeah, the GPU itself is not really in harm's way, but the solder can fracture at temperatures higher than that.

Many laptop CPUs, on the other hand, can hit stupid temps and be quite happy.

Occasionally, when virtualizing 7, my CPU temp can go up to 190º with fans going at 6084 rpm (the max). Hopefully, my new rig shouldn't hit those temperatures.

    20-40 C idle, 50 C at load. If it gets above 60 C, it's too hot.
I remember in my A+ book it said that ideally the inside of a computer should never be over 100F but everybody in the class though that was really low and unrealistic.
I personally set 70C as the max in the BIOS. The CPU should never get that hot, and it should not consistently be over 60C.

I can't changed anything in my BIOS settings in that department.

And that would be the AMBIENT temp. As in the air inside the case. The air around the internals is going to be warm, but not anywhere near as hot as the CPU/GPU. The idea is to provide a low ambient temp, because that affects the other temps.

The max temperature depends on the model of chip. Traditionally AMD CPUs don't cope with higher temps as well as Intel, but on the other hand they don't usually get as hot, either.

I don't want to offend anyone, but I'd like to request that we stick to Celsius where possible. It's both the computer and international standard and it keeps things much easier if we all use the same thing.

The States uses Fahrenheit and I kinda prefer Celsius. Regardless, I'll still use Celsius.

Anywho, my CPU's average is 39C. My hard drives are around 42, though.

I find it wired that my book uses Fahrenheit... but I think your right about the case temp, it even says "the case should never exceed..."
    Spoiler:

Anyways, while we're talking about over heating, have any of you ever had a catosrofisc harware failure?

I haven't, but the server in my class room has, stupid thing nearly burnt to the ground...

Point of origin seems to be a shortsirct on the Controller chip of the hard drive. Luckly something cut the power before the fire had a chance to spread and the rest of the hardware is still in use today.

I gotta say I've been extremely impressed with temperature control of my current system. (see attachment)

On my laptop though the GPU Diode usually reaches 80°C when Idling even after a thorough cleaning. I don't like to tax the laptop since that easily put it up in the 92°C range.

So... how was Christmas this year in tech? I got $400 today, which combined with my previous aquisitions and previous saved funds should be enough to get me a new computer. :3 leave me $350 short of getting the parts for my new rig D:

I got $250 in Tech Gift cards, this makes purchasing a that new HD 5770 very easy, plus I can use any surplus to get a new pair of 2TB WDgreens to replace the seagate that kicked it 3 days ago and almost ruined a RAID set. (Thankfully the other drive was not compromised.)

[font"segoe print"]Haha, very nice. I ould think of a lot of things that I could buy with that gift card.

I got a portable 1TB HDD. I needed an extra one for my Time Machine back up and it is all good. So I just partitioned that and using the rest of the TB to put my random films on. Happy times.[/font]

I got a Kinect Sensor. Its quite a lot of fun, and surprisingly a work out. I guess the only other tech gift I got was from Google on the 15th when I got my Cr-48.

Don't put the WD Greens in a RAID array. They're known to have issues and be moody in arrays. I know they're cheap, but it's not worth it.

I've been tossing up what to get myself for Xmas. At this point in time, I'm seriously considering forking out for an iPod Touch 32GB. Hmm....

The only real tech I got this year was my bamboo tablet, which I bought with my grandma's money present (both $100, and I had to take care of tax XD)

Another thing that may count would be a set of screwdriver tips and a flashlight from my mom. Which I know is useful because I often dig into my computer >__>

But tomorrow, I'mma get my monitor from Best Buy with my dad ^__^

Oh, and apparently we also have kinect now... I honestly wasn't excited for that.

Think of it this way: you can hack it to run with Windows, OS X, and Linux to do cool, totally useless stuff that won't increase your productivity whatsoever! ^_^

I put the video card in just fine. Everything's all good until I booted up my machine. It wouldn't connect to my monitor. Everything's plugged in, too. It might be my PSU, but...

Does the fan on the graphics card spin up like crazy? Just checking that you've plugged the 6-pin power into the end of the card.

What sort of screen are you getting, AK?

I'mma get an Acer 23". One of those sexy 1920x1080ers I've been longing for XD, even though I actually would have preferred a 24"

And I'mma hook it up for a dual monitor setup. I have one right now with an Acer 20.5" 1680x1050 and some old US Logic 1280x1024 o_o I'mma replace the US logic with the Acer 23" I'm getting for a freaking awesome view XD

And when my brother gets grounded I'll try to set up a triple... :D In fact, I may still be sticking with all 3.

Of course, I'm going to have to buy another video card if I want all of them at optimal performance. I'm going to have to hook up the Acers to my video card and the US logic to the on-board. I tested it, it's possible, it just looks...weird >__>

They make a 23"? Do you mean a 22? I know that many (read: mine) of the 22" Acers have an almost washy glossy screen. See if you can look at a demo model, because the 24s actually have a bigger surface and the size difference as astronomical, despite what one would think.
