A thought came to me recently while I was busy reading the speculation pages on the Madoka Wiki and pondering about whether I was going to resume playing Persona 4. Witches' Labyrinths and the Persona 4 dungeons seem to be awfully similar concepts.

People stranded in the TV world form dungeons around themselves based on their individual neuroses; Yukiko's castle represents a desire to be saved by a Prince Charming-like figure, Rise's burlesque house represents a desire to not be seen as a sex object, Mitsuo's dungeon represents the fact that he's a worthless NEET whose life revolves around video games, et cetera, et cetera. Witches' Labyrinths are speculated to be based on motifs associated with the Witches' past lives as Puella Magi; for instance, Charlotte's labyrinth with its hospital and dessert motif implies that she was a terminal cancer patient who wanted to eat her favorite foods, and she wished to get well so she could enjoy life again. The only real differences are that MC/Souji thankfully never had to sign a contract with Kyuubey in order to gain the Wild Card ability, Persona users don't spontaneously transform into eldritch abominations, and Madoka and company never had the benefit of working for largely benevolent overseers like Igor and Margaret.

And now I have an idea for a Persona 4/Madoka Magica crossover that will never leave my head. Damn it.

EDIT: And apparently TV Tropes already beat me to it. Oh, well. Some of the other theories they've come up with really are quite amusing, though. Asides from the "Witches = Shadows" theory (which I basically restated in a more obtuse manner here), my personal favorites are "Madoka Magica is set in the same universe as Inception," "Rebecca Black made a contract with Kyuubey," the various Nanoha- and Gurren Lagann-related theories, "Kyuubey is the bastard son of Tzeench and Slaanesh," "Mitakihara is an offshoot of the Matrix," and "Homura's Witch form = Bayonetta."

There's a Madoka photoshoot tomorrow, I'm hoping more show up. And I met jigglypuff. ^_^

It's a pretty good series. The square head they had pissed me off slightly, but art style isn't something to complain about unless you're some hate-filled idiot that attempts to say an anime is bad and uses stupid excuses.

Some of the merchandise being produced for Madoka Magica is...interesting, to say the least. Would you go in a pool with a Charlotte inner tube? I would. Also, I think this would make a pretty good gift for my kid if I had one, though I obviously wouldn't show him/her the actual anime until he/she was mature enough.

In semi-related news, it was only a matter of time before Max Factory started making Madoka Magica Figmas; I'm certainly looking forward to any future releases.

Well, Jack, I'll have a response to your very insightful comments on the parallels between Madoka and Persona 4 at another time, but for now......Charlotte innertube? Do Japanese otaku even go to the beach?

I have the sudden inclination to scour Danbooru to see if anyone has an image of Mami wearing a Charlotte-themed hoodie or anything of that sort.

It's certainly one of the weirder pieces of merchandise I've seen, I'll tell you that much. Otaku in general aren't exactly the beach-going type, though I'd probably bet that the ones who live in Okinawa are more likely to go than their counterparts in the home islands. There's also foreign orders to consider.

Going back to the subject of Mami and Charlotte-themed apparel, there's quite a few pics of her wearing Charlotte-themed hoodies, as well as at least one of her in a Charlotte-themed sleeping bag. Going off on a tangent, the thought of Mami as a dullahan is oddly appealing to me, though that might be because I recently started watching Durarara!! on Adult Swim.

In other news, I love Inception. Leonardo DiCaprio as Mami, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Kyoko, Ellen Page as Madoka, Cillian Murphy as Sayaka, and Michael Caine as Kyuubey? Yes, please. Only problem is, who'll play Homura? Ken Watanabe, Marion Cotillard, or Tom Hardy?

Finally, Dave, Lily, and I are planning a Madoka Magica RP. Who else wants in?

Considering the way Japanese broadcast networks function, there's a chance that Madoka hasn't even finished airing in Okinawa yet. While a popular vacation spot, I've always envisioned them as ignored and forgotten by the mainland. My imaginings are likely incorrect in this instance, though.

Mami in Charlotte clothing? I might have a new theme in the works. I had Mami on my Danbooru blacklist for a long time because just the thought of her depressed me for a long time after Episode 3. I'm much less familiar with the existing fanart for her than for the other characters.

I'd absolutely join a Madoka RP. I haven't participated in any kind of roleplay (or creative writing exercise in general) in years, but I'll give it a shot.

Regarding Mami fanart, here's a tag that should interest you in more than a few ways. Also, if you'll refer to my previous search for Madoka pics in the "Disgustingly Adorable" pool, you'll see that deep down, Mami loev Charlotte, and Charlotte loev Mami. It was truly unfortunate that they both got off on the wrong foot with each other.

Also, good to see that you're on board with the Madoka RP. We need all the qualified recruits we can get.
