  • Can we please not turn this into an excuse to showcase our opinions of gun control?

This is tragic, yes, and my condolences go out to the families of the victims, but using it as an excuse to bash or uphold America's 2nd Amendment just makes you come off as callous.
    This.

Anyway, this is pretty sad to hear. I mean, if you really can't find a better way to spend your 2 AM than shooting people at a theatre, please, try harder to get a life because your current attempts are not very fruitful. One of my friends went to the premier last night and she came home pretty white-faced, since she had heard that it happened and we were all terrified that she could have been caught in that kind of thing because it could have also happened at the theater she went to and just as easily. Just goes to show you that life and people can be pretty messed up at times.

As much as I want to agree with this, it's inevitable that discussions about gun control and the glorification of killers by the media will spring up when such a tragic event has just happened.

  • People were looking forward to this movie for a long time. The day finally came, and these people went out to have some fun and enjoy themselves - and they get killed for it. What should have been exciting became a nightmare.

Just a stupid and senseless waste of life.

I don't know what was up with the shooter. He is well-educated. Did he snap? Not sure. Maybe not. To gather all of that and booby-trap the house shows some kind of planning, forethought, intent, etc. Not really a spur of the moment kind of thing. What was the point even? If he killed himself in the end, it would have made a little bit more sense. Slightly, kind of, not really. I don't know. I gotta quote the related movie franchise and say that some people just want to watch the world burn.

  • Tragic. That's it. These people just wanted to go and see a movie that waited a long time for and some scum.. urgh.

Another thing is, I hope none died, but why were they kids there?

I can't believe kids were among those shot at... terrible. This was supposed to be a big event and suddenly it gets shattered.

I guess the kids were there cos well, they love Batman.

According to some witness accounts I was reading, it happened during a part of the movie where there was actually gunfire so some people didn't even notice anything was wrong for a while. ._.; Did the killer purposefully stand aside and wait for a time when he could get more shots off & kill more people before anyone noticed they should be up and running away? Disgusting!
(Although I also heard there was a warning shot so the accounts of it happening during gunfire may have been from a neighbouring theatre that could hear it but didn't know what was going on?)

And I took note of the fact that the guy was well-educated too. That's just scary, because you always immediately assume that people who made it that far (into medical school, even! And was applying for a PhD in neuroscience!) are more collected than others and would never even dream of something like this.

The reports I've read said that he used tear gas first. No matter what it was though, it's obvious that the suspect did a lot of planning in order for this to happen.

  • I just heard about the six year old girl and I just... can't. Like that 9 year old girl in Arizona last year.

How is wanting to discuss how bad things like this can be prevented callous? I think it's callous not to want to talk about saving future lives. Or is it only acceptable to respond to tragedy with prayers and feelings? What if my feelings of condolence stir me to never want to see something like this in the news again? Because, honestly, that's how I feel.

  • Why does everyone jump to gun "control". If people at that threader had guns, they could have shot the man who was attacking everyone. Murder is wrong, especially this kind, with vigilantly murder being not much better. But I think everyone could of understood if a reasonable person decided to open fire on this man, to save the lives of everyone else.

I like this post. If anyone has anything to say about gun control, I think you should refer to this because imo, it's very accurate. If that man had been killed to prevent 15 people from dying and 30+ from being injured, I'm sure the majority would agree that it would have been best.

Less people would have died if cinemas had security guards or people were bulletproof vests in their day to day lives. Both things unlikely to happen but both, IMO, better than millions of people being in the possession of guns in their day to day lives.

If someone in the audience had a gun in a poorly lit cinema studio they would likely not have even hit the man, and ended up killing or injuring someone else themselves.

If we're just going to be playing 'if, then' games, getting nowhere, then let's not backtrack to 'if gun control laws...'

You used 'if' just as much as I did. Quite how anyone can honestly believe that more guns on the street is a good idea I don't know.

I haven't heard any interviews with victims/family, but if I was involved in something like this I would never want to see a firearm again. Let alone be encouraged to hold one myself for 'protection'.

  • I heard about the news yesterday morning when a friend of mine that I follow on twitter used the hashtag #TheaterShooting. I then saw it trending so I decided to look it up and then found the story really quick. That was sad to see how some lunatic just went to go shoot 71 people killing 10 on sight at the theater with 2 dying at the hospital. Of course yesterday this limited other stories in the news nationwide across the US, but with something as serious as a massacre, it does deserve as much hype as it did, IMO.

  • I'll ask this.

When was the last time we had a person go crazy, in this country, and kill numerous people with missiles and RPG's? To the best of my knowledge, never. Know why? Because those are illegal to own, illegal for civilians to purchase, and next to impossible for your garden variety whack-job to obtain.

Saying that less guns will make gun crime more common is a complete farce made up by the NRA, and whatever other pro-gun groups are out their. The fact that missile launchers and rpg's being illegal to obtain on the civillian market, and the fact that we have had no cases of people shooting missiles and RPG's at each other for no reason, is proof that the 'less weapons, more weapon crime' theory is complete crap.

The point behind the 2nd ammendment was to ensure the people were armed in case they ever, as a whole, had to overthrow a corrupt government. I'll tell you this. Civillan-use weapons? Yeah. Not going to to **** against the military's weapons... you know, tanks, long range missiles, drones, and *insert military-only weapon here*? At this day and age, the 2nd ammendment as it is is completely pointless. The only way to stay true to its purpose would be to allow more high end weaponry (IE, missile launchers, RPG's, long range sniper rifles, tanks, jet's, whatever) out on the civillian market, which will never happen. Basically, this amendment is useless for what it was intended to do.

As for the shooting, I heard on the news that the person apparently said "I am the Joker", or was dressed up like him, or something like that.

Edit - Something else, the whole more guns on the street and how it will reduce crime?

He entered through the exit door near the bottom of the theater where the screen is on the right hand side and as soon as he entered he threw the teargas. It was during a scene where there was a lot of action. Then he started shooting almost immediately afterwards, and brought multiple firearms so there wasn't any need to reload. He shot randomly at people in no particular order and he also intentionally aimed at people who he could see close to trying to leave, from the interviews of those involved that I've seen since this happened. When he was arrested, there are some reports of him saying "I'm the joker." When I heard about this I was so glued to what was going on, and I was very upset. I don't know why it impacted me so much as it did, but it did. And when I learned that Jessica Redfield was one of the victims, and heard them explain her story, I looked her up on Twitter and read her blog and oh my goodness. That killing alone brought me on the verge of tears.

His will be in court in a matter of hours.
Anybody have a feeling that he's going to use the insanity defense?
If his defence team tries to plead insanity, I wonder how that stands up to the fact that he planned the shootings weeks in advance.

Is it possible for an insane person to plot mass murder and actually carry out a mass shooting?

But he already went to court a few hours ago, actually. :( People commented on him being dazed and that the charges actually occur next week, so I figure he won't be making his plea til then.

He looks... very creepy. idk. Something weird about him. I dunno I don't think he'll aim for insanity since he seems like he's proud of everything he's doing/has done and if he went for insanity it'd counteract that?

I live far outside the USA's timezones.

Maybe he is like the joker and is hatching some devious plot to flee from his holding cell. AFAIK, one person was arrested for threatening violence if he was not released.
