The Mortal Instruments is on my to-read list, actually! A trilogy that just wrapped up this year that I adored so much was Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor. It has a lot of high fantasy and religious elements, not unlike His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman (another favorite of mine). Worth mentioning since it's also similar to the books I've mentioned, but East by Edith Pattou was a favorite of mine throughout high school.
If you're into realism, Jhumpa Lahiri writes beautifully with really pragmatic characters. A couple other books on my bookshelf that I personally enjoyed are Freeze Frame (fiction, YA), Uglies series (dystopian/sci-fi, YA), and it probably goes without saying but... Harry Potter, lol. I read a lot of Young Adult because it's easy for me to speed-read, and I've yet to find many standard fiction novels that are as emotionally gripping. Maybe it's just the books I've read, but I've read very few standard fiction books that make me empathize with the characters the way that Young Adult books do, although I am technically a young adult, so... anyway, I digress lol.
Bolded the authors' names instead of making a list... idk lol.
