When playing a new game or replaying an older one, I mostly pick Pokémon I've never or not much used before. Otherwise you completely know how that Pokémon will develop itself. Still, generational difference can give the same Pokémon other properties, especially from Gen III to IV.

Oh dear almost to 50 :P
I always use the newest gen of pokemon like in 6th gen XY i onky used 6th gen pokes. In harder games i usually plan out my team does anyone ever just go and pick a poke at random to be on your team?

Dedenne I do that all the time, but I wish I didnt.
The magic of playing Sapphire years ago for the first time was that I had no idea what I'll see nor use.
Nowadays it's hard to refrain from planning in advance since I know what's ahead of me.

Still though, I'll try not to plan in advance for my soon-to-happen first White run, since I have no idea what is the game all about and I dont know all the Pokemon tbh. :D

In the first run of a new game (XY/ORAS), I'll only ever use Pokémon from that Region. In X I used only Kalos Pokémon and then in Alpha Sapphire only Hoenn Pokémon.

I use literally anything that I find/like - I don't have any restrictions on what I use other than it has to be something I like haha.

But thanks to B/W's initial restriction to using only newer Pokémon, I found sooo many new Pokémon that I like, such as Swadloon, Darumaka, and Excadrill.

I'm like Squirrel. I just use whatever Pokemon I like in the games.

There have been times when I've planned out my team, like when I used really underused Pokemon in Ruby (Grumpig and Pelipper, for example). Other times, challenges like the Nuzlocke and its variants mean that I use Pokemon that I never would have used otherwise. Like Watchog! I never would have used a Watchog by choice, but I used one in my Wedlocke and really enjoyed having her on the team.

Whenever it's a new game or generation, I feel like I should be using Pokémon from that Region as they're completely new. Second time around it's not really an issue, in Y I'm using a few from different Regions.

I find it funny how I hardly used any Johto Pokémon in HG/SS, mainly because most Johto Pokémon don't seem to appeal to me.

    Boo.~

I think my favorite region's Pokemon would probably be Kalos with all it's cute Pokemon. even though I used Pidgeot over Talonflame Goodra was the first real Dragon type I ever fully trained. ^~^U Fully as in pure dragon typed and a pseudolegendary I mean, I've used Kingdra and Altaria before haha.

Starters wise my favorites are Johto and Unova! Hoenn gets pretty close but I'm not a bug fan of Treecko. I really don't like Sinnoh's starters but they have their own qualities.

I honestly liked the greatest amount of Hoenn and Unova Pokémon, but Sinnoh had a pretty high number of likable Pokémon as well.

I like Kanto's pokemon the most though my favourite region's probably Hoenn! It felt massive with all the surfing and exploring you could do.

I think my favourite starters are Charmander, Cyndaquil, Mudkip, Piplup, Oshawott and Chespin from each generation! What about you guys? :]

Hmm, my favorite starters from each generation would have to be Bulbasaur, Chikorita, Treecko, Turtwig, Tepig, and Chespin! See if you can spot the outlier. =P

what no I haven't written this list before!! Also revise it's clearly bulbasaur he doesn't start with c or t!

In Regional order it's: Charmander, Totodile, Torchic, Piplup, Oshawott, and Chespin.
