  • I started with Pokemon Yellow, my parents bought it for my brother, and I sometimes stole it from him and played it xD. I was the kind of little brothers that deleted their save files too ^^'

It was around 1998 and I was on holiday with my family. I had my gameboy with me and my copy of Mario and the 6 golden coins. There was a little market near the caravan site and we decided to all take a trip there. There was a man selling loads of games. I seen lots of ps1 games that I wanted (They were all fake/copied) and were selling at a 90% discount. (They all ended up not working due to me not having a chipped PS1) but also there was a gameboy game, Pokémon Red. (Which was not fake) and I seen Charizard on the box, had no idea what it was a about but really wanted it.

I got back to the caravan and because I didn't bring my ps1 on holiday I only had my gameboy so decided to sway Mario for Pokémon. I picked Charmander and off I went. The rest is history. I still have that original save, I never once started that game over, so I still have my very first Charizard there. I just wished there was a way to transfer it to the new games!

A friend of mine brought some figures and a guidebook over when he came to play one day, and I thought the designs were pretty cool. He even gave me the Meowth so we could stage some mock battles...not that I had any clue as to what I was doing, and he had a Gengar, which made my Meowth pretty useless.

Then the first episode of the anime aired on SMTV Live (anyone else remember how awesome that used to be?) and then Red and the trading cards followed. Then EVERYONE was into it, and in Primary School you either like what your friends like or you're a very lonely little kid. It kinda exploded into a big thing for me pretty damn quick.

When I was like 7 years old, lining up to go into class I saw something on the floor, 10mins into the lesson I asked to go to the bathroom... I stole that pokemon card without know what it was :D

It was a Magicarp. (baseset, which I'm pretty sure was the only set out at the time)
I kid you not, I risked getting into trouble for a Magicarp. But that's what introduced me to pokemon :P

I was at a dinner with my parents' friends when I was about 5 or 6, and one of the older kids was playing Pokemon Blue on their Game Boy Color. I was watching her play all night and afterwards I asked my parents for a GBC and Pokemon Red. :P

That was the first time I actually saw the game (besides this commercial)

I'm pretty sure I watched the anime before I knew about the game though, but I don't really remember which I got into first.

I've never seen that commercial before... That is quite disturbing.

Yeah, in hindsight it's pretty creepy, but they played it on kid's cartoon channels all the time when I was a kid. :P

  • I watched the anime since I was 3 with one of my youngest older brother (I have four older brothers - one older sister and one younger sister, if you're curious about it all). I would occasionally play on his game, or I'd watch him play. For whatever reason, the earliest memory I have is watching him duplicate Pokemon.

All the kids in school got trading cards. And I mean ALL the kids. Even the "cool" girls who didn't usually play with the boys. Everybody traded, for weeks I think. Until the school banned the TCG haha. Because of scams. I managed to get some really good deals in though. Nobody really played the gameboy games. Idk, they were expensive and not really something you could do with friends easily, I guess. I mean, trading is fun but the trading cards you could play with together and stuff.

And the anime, of course! It came around the same time and we all watched it. Everybody could (and still can) sing the intro. In swedish of course ;) Those were the days.

  • I was at the back of a bus with my cousins and they were playing with some Pokemon cards. I was intrigued and I'd never seen them before, then around the same time I started watching the original series of the anime on TV and then soon afterwards I got my first game.

  • It [Pokemon Crystal] was one of the first video games we owned, you know in the GameBoy era, and Pokemon Ruby was one of the first games that I owned, so it sort of stuck with me.

  • Well... I was watching my friend's gbp when he said: ''I'll play a game I got...'' it was Pokemon yellow, I was curious, so I asked him to lend me the game so... I went home and started playing pkmn yllw. I have to tell I didn't sleep for two whole days!! Honest! It was so great, that I had to get a copy for my self. I got it and later, came Colosseu N64, then Crystal, then Ruby later Emerald... And the rest is history...

I watched the anime show and got into the deck game. I started playing the gameboy games as well. I love collecting the cards and all. I can't recall my age but I think I was in middle school when it came out. I was only into it for like 2 years I think, but now I am back into pokemon and more confused then ever. lmao

  • I also got into Pokémon thanks to the anime and TCG, though I can't remember which got my attention first. >.<

It was most likely the anime, though, which is probably why I recognized the cards and felt so excited to collect them :D

I was around 10 years old. I got the GBA SP in order to play Crash Bandicoot, I think. My brothers convinced me to start playing Pokemon, so I did; starting with Sapphire. I, then, fell in love with the series.

  • It was when the Pokémon anime was booming in late 90's that I'm starting to like Pokémon. Several months later, I saw my cousin was playing Pokémon on his Gameboy Color which makes me like it even more, so at some point, I asked him to borrow the handheld because I wanted to play it, I think the games that I played on his Gameboy are Pokémon Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold and a certain bootlegged Crystal. Yes, the Vietnamese one. :P
