Hey, I just wanted to know, how many people actually used the linked battling system for ROM hacks? Do people actually battle eachother online via ROM hacks?

Depending on the hack, yeah. Before the days of Touhoumon Shoddy, people would battle each other via link relatively often (as far as hacks are concerned). Granted, it wasn't a huge trend, but if you compared it to any other hack or hack series, it was probably the largest thriving Link Battle community.

Nowadays I imagine people only do it if it comes to mind. I know few people that actually do it, especially since most hacks streamline link features into the main game. It does happen, though, yes.

    PKMN Remake Cobalt

Hey everyone 🙋. I'm a new member so you might not know me but I was just curious and wanted some opinions..

As I watch video after video on YouTube about the best rom hacks I was wondering why I never see cobalt on any of them. As veteran players in sure some of yall if not all have played the hack. Did nobody else enjoy it? Did I miss something like was it not a well received hack in the community?

Like I said I'm new so I'm.just curious what yall think. I loved cobalt though. It may not be the prettiest but still one of my favorites.

To me, it seems like the people on youtube only like hacks if they're completed. By that, I mean a league to beat, 8 gym leaders, the usual. I feel like they should start playing other hacks, possibly progressing hacks or abandoned ones. I bet a lot of people here like cobalt, but the youtubers only play hacks that are very far is progress. You can probably find some great hacks here, possibly not complete, but some great hacks nonetheless.

I mean I'm new to the community only been in the rom scence recently for about two months but maybe its just my nature, I scan constantly for any roms I can download into my windows phone and I find alot of good ones I hear nothing about mainstream. Just seems like most dnt take the time to really search the back pages for hacks you know?

Cobalt was good even though its not complete and really wish theyd complete it soon!

Could you, by chance, link the cobalt you're talking about? If it's the one by spherical ice, he left it for gaia.

Obviously Youtubers play completed ones most of the time, people are not going to want to see half a game and Youtuber's are busy playing other games and making videos so they don't want to play the same game again so they can unlock the new gym, make one video, then wait for the next patch. Although MunchingOrange doesn't seem to mind, he played through the Beta for Glazed.

That's because it's less about whether they're complete and more about whether they're popular. Popular hacks = More Views, finished or otherwise. Playing them later in their lives generally just ensures that you can get more episodes out.

Pretty much all the popular hacks are complete though. A lot of people will refuse to play a beta and just stick to the completed hacks, which is the reason that they're popular in the first place.

I dunno about that. I would disagree in their being popular because they're completed. A lot of people (the majority, I'd say) do play betas and actively look forward to them. A recent example, Pokemon Gaia is very popular and it's still in Beta- hell, I'd say it's one of the most popular hacks of this or last year. It was popular since once it hit the Progressing Hacks section, even though it wouldn't see a beta for quite some time, and when it did hit, it saw a good deal of players. Another example, and probably one of the most famous and most classic examples, Pokemon ShinyGold, which, for many years, was the most famous Pokemon hack in existence, and it neve saw a full release. Pokemon Quartz, Marble, and Ash's Quest's popularity, on the other hand, paled by comparison, and Ash's Quest (a hack based off of the anime, of all things), had a full release posted from the get go.

So yeah, I don't think a hack's being completed has an inherently positive effect on its popularity or a greater number of players than an equally promising beta.

    2. Mapping is way faster with 4 tile blocks rather than putting each tile in the map as its own

Im only reading this now but still would like to respond, since this is kind of wrong.
If you use amap, you can select more than 1 tile by using strg + rigth mouse click.

So we're trying to take some ideas on board for our YouTube channel and have started with a very very basic beginners tutorial on making your first script (here).

Are there any other beginner level things you think could use a video tutorial? :) we'll probably do some more scripting ones, but any specific requests would be good!

Maybe at a later date we'll manage some more advanced tutorials as well, but we'll see. :)

Hey, I watched it. It was nice, and brief which is a good point to keep at (sometimes people who would watch the videos, don't watch them because they get intimidated by the length).
For beginner level tutorials, maybe try to make an explanation video on things like using a hex editor, repointing tables, how to convert pointers to little endian (commonly called reverse hex around here). I think hex and the hex editor are the biggest obstacles for beginning hackers. Most of them refuse to open a hex editor, and rely solely on tools and patches. Breaking this habit may yield in a positive outcome. Also it pains me to say this, but evidently, I think most beginners don't know what a bit/byte/kb...ect is :/

Why do beginner level things only? :D

I think you guys should shoot at expanding some of the base knowledge of our more established hackers. Not many people know how to do things outside of scripting/mapping and I think it'd be useful for the expansion of the scene later on. (I'm just salty because finding contributors for projects are impossible because people want to contribute but can't).

Using a Hex Editor in general would be useful - we could definitely build up to that following scripting. I was thinking repointing with XSE might be useful to beginners, as overwriting problems seem pretty common, and hex editor repointing seems like a natural progression from that.

In terms of more advanced tutorials, at the moment we're limited by my feeble knowledge - but we're looking to expand the YT team soon so that may well change.

    Thanks for the feedback :).

For one, approximately nobody in the Pokémon hacking community knows how to manipulate 3D models. For two, there are no mass-market 3DS emulators, and approximately nobody in the Pokémon hacking community cares to permanently cripple their 3DS for the sole purpose of loading homebrew.

    So, uh...these aren't the reasons.

First off, there's nothing to say that nobody in the Pokemon community knows how to 3D model. There's not much to indicate that. And considering people have already started making model hacks for Pokemon XY/ORAS, this isn't really a drawback.

Second, citra. It works quite well nowadays. Not sure if XY works on it yet, but it's an option.

And third, you can't cripple your 3DS in an attempt to load homebrew. All of the methods that allow you to do so are 100% safe and would take actual effort to harm your 3DS. HANS, the means for playing hacks on your 3DS, is perfectly safe as well.

I'd say that's pretty true of our community? Unless there's some underground hacking team working around here :c.
