  • I agree a greater focus needs to be put on the ability to apply skills but I don't want to see that detract from the push towards academic excellence either.

    That's pretty awesome.
From what I have read, and I have read it a lot for my course, it is quite different from our state models. But I'm not sure if it is different enough... the main focus is on integrating subject areas, goals for learning, cross-curricula priorities and general skills together to create a more effective learning/teaching system. There is a stronger focus on teaching for diverse learners though.

I'm Australian. Never been to Minnesota but I have heard it is an okay place to live.
Right now we are undergoing a big shift from separate state curriculum to a national model so that will likely remedy that problem to a degree.

Where are you from by the way?
True, but these days that's all special ed classes/schools seem to do. It is rare to see a special ed teacher actively trying to help kids cope with their disabilities they just hand them ridiculously easy work, don't teach or challenge them and let them stagnate.
Oh I see! I have never heard of a special education class being run that way but it sounds effective enough. At least you learned something useful out of it.
    What a waste o.O
It would have been fun but it can't have been good for your education to be held back like that.
    Fair enough.
I went through a short phase where people I knew at school found out and started talking to me slower and stuff... despite me having far better grades than them. Suffice to say they don't do that any more.
So I have heard, the number of times even doctors have mistaken me for having Asperger's is too high to count. Even though the paperwork says otherwise.
I agree with you there. I think that relying on medication for things like this can make things worse in the long run.

I don't have Asperger's though I have high functioning autism... I don't think the two are that different though.
The idea of me on meds has been thrown around before but thankfully I have never actually been on any. The thought of a life ruled by medication because people don't like me being a bit different really bothers me though.
