Challenge Mode was B/W 2 only, and it was more challenging than the regular game, especially the first half. The second half was still fairly easy though. Problem is that you had to either beat the game once or transfer the key from someone else's game to unlock it.

And Honedge's final evolution absolutely kicks ass, so you'll have a blast with him.

Gen 6 isn't bad. I like a lot of the new Pokemon (despite how few there are) and Kalos is a good region. I just hope they build on the plot in the 3rd version/sequel/whatever and make the games a bit harder.

And the 3DS is a great system. Lots of fantastic games, so you should have plenty of options to pass the time.

I've only attempted a nuzlocke once and it was Platinum...which is apparently the hardest game to nuzlocke. I didn't really have too much trouble but just got distracted about halfway through. It was stressful though.

You didn't miss much with Gen 5, although my opinion of them has gotten better since I played Blaze Black and Volt White - much better than the original games. Plot is the best thing about 5 - and then they dropped the ball on that in 6.
