I'm not a big fan of the vocals in that song (and Mark Knopfler's singing in general) but, if you haven't noticed by now, I pay more attention to the instruments than the lyrics/vocals. Hence why I linked you to that other song from the same album. Now that is an instrumental masterpiece.
I don't think I, personally, lost anything. I was just visiting for a couple days before heading back to college so all I had was a suitcase with clothes, my computer, and other assorted items, most of which were upstairs in my room. There were a few things (none of them mine) downstairs in the basement which simply melted due to the heat. But we have insurance which should cover most of the damage. We're going over to the house tomorrow to figure out which things will get "cleaned," which will be written off as total losses, and which we'll take with us to our new temporary housing. I'm not sure if we'll be able to get back into the house for the next few months and I fly home back to the dorms on Sunday so tomorrow's going to be very hectic.
Unfortunately, we weren't able to pinpoint the exact cause of the fire. We think it might have been a rat-killing device which uses electricity to painlessly kill a rat that enters the device. However, the investigator with the fire department who examined the area of the fire wasn't able to determine definitively what started it.
Well, almost everything living is OK. We lost some of my mom's finches but all the humans, dogs, and other major animals made it out safely. Luckily I was in the room directly above the basement (where the fire was located) so I noticed the smoke almost right away. However, apparently the smoke damage was severe enough that some walls need to be replaced. Unfortunately, it could be 6-12 months before we can move back in. Still, given the circumstances we were incredibly lucky. Things could have been a hell of a lot worse.
