a continuous Kanto journey roleplay. welcome.
rated T. Spots available. theme SONG.
    < RP pad > < IC thread >

Kanto is one of the most modern regions in the Pokémon World. With plenty of big cities and routes, and few mysterious or religious places left, some even call Kanto plain or boring compared to the ancient Sinnoh or dramatic Hoenn. Yet, the region is popular, both for business and pleasure. And last but not least for one, major reason: the pokémon league.

Some say the league arrangement and organisation originated in Kanto, long time ago. Others say it was just modernized here so that people associate Kanto with pokémon battling. No matter how the actual history goes, the fact remains that natives as well as travelers seek the fame, strength and prizes that can come from being a successful pokémon trainer in this region.

And now it's your turn. No matter your background or your age, you have decided to get a League License for this season and start traveling and training to beat or impress all the official gym leaders, collect badges and eventually hope to qualify for the final Pokémon League Tournament atop Indigo Plateau. The League License is usually referred to as a Pokédex - a nifty encyclopedia/minicomputer/phone/ID invented by professor Oak.

Since the lowest ranking official gym is situated in Pewter City, most League Challengers begin their journey there. The same goes for you. Regardless of where you started from, you have now reached Brock's town with the few pokémon partners you have captured so far. Are you really ready to take on your first gym already?

NOTE: New player will now be starting at the entrance to Mt. Moon, not at Pewter City.

    KantoPoke_857599.jpg

This will be an "archetypical pokémon journey RP" (thanks, Plumbum!) meaning that your underlying goal as you play will be to visit all the gyms of Kanto and collect badges. However, you can travel in any direction you want (even though it is advised to take on the gyms in the order they are encountered in the games), go back and forth, linger somewhere, aquire a trainer class and gather specific kinds of pokémon, set up sidequests or your own goals... It is your adventure.

Every new main character will start in Pewter City, and cannot access other areas than Viridian Forest and Pewter City before they have challenged Brock. After that though, you don't have to wait for anyone or do a special event to continue. There are only a few things I require that you follow if you want to step into this RP, and I'll talk about them below:

    Aquiring pokémon
You can capture as many as you like. In each area, I will provide a description post and that will include what wild pokémon you may encounter there. Of course you can decide for yourself what moves the wild pokémon know. Only 6 pokémon can be carried at once, and the 7th will be teleported into the "digital world" until you access it via a pokémon center. Before a capture is complete, you must end your post and let the GM decide if the wild pokémon will really come with you or not. If not, try again or do something else! You may only trade pokémon with other players - not with NPCs.
    Moves & Evolution
There are no levels in this version of the pokémon world, but for simplicity's sake there are universal "moves" that pokémon can learn by growing stronger or practicing. Don't try to make too much realistic sense of it, please ;) For each area you pass through, I will require at least one post (meaning, you can't just hop from one area to another and skip the route in between). And for each area you pass through, you may teach each of your pokémon on hand 1 new move. 6 is the max number of moves a pokémon can keep in memory at once. When you feel like it would be nice if your pokémon evolved, the GM will decide if your request is granted or not. Pokémon will not need trading or most kind of items to evolve - exception is stones, which will still be required. Also note: you better keep track of your movesets yourself. I will possibly list each character's pokémon somewhere, but not the moves!
    Gyms
I think I'm going to keep the traditional gym leaders for this RP. Whenever you challenge a gym leader to a battle, end your post just when the battle is over, before the gym leader has said anything on the outcome. The GM will decide whether or not you deserve a badge, judging from how you handled the gym posts. Be aware - it won't be impossible to lose a gym battle but still get the badge if it seems like your character tried really hard or learned a lot! After all, didn't Ash get a few badges without proper victories?
    Team Rocket
I will not present a specific plot related to them, but you may incorporate them in your own plots if you want. We assume that they behave and have the same basic goals as in the Kanto games, else you can pitch your other ideas in the OOC thread and see if someone wants in on your crime-fighting (?) shenanigans!
    Legendary pokémon
Meaning Moltres, Zapdos, Articuno, Mew, Mewtwo and also Deoxys. As with Team Rocket, I will not include them in any overlying plot, but if you want to make a specific legendary pokémon important to your character's story somehow, feel free to incorporate that in your SU or pitch ideas in the OOC thread later!
    Using the OOC
You can chit-chat in the OOC thread whenever you want, but there are some times when I require that you make a post there to notify the GM about changes:
-- When you have posted a capture attempt and are awaiting approval!
-- When you have posted a gym battle and are awaiting judgement!
-- When you feel finished with an area and want to move on into one that has not yet been described!
    Otherwise, I might miss your IC posts and you'll have to wait unnecessarily long ;;

    RULES:
    - Rating is T, so try not to be too explicit.

    - It is okay to make joint posts. It is also totally okay to make solo posts. Choose a mix of the two that gives you the best journey RP experience.

    - I plan to leave spots open indefinitely. New players will always start in Pewter City at the entrance to Mt. Moon with two pokémon (or one if they prefer so).

    - Be fair, don't make your character overly unbeatable, and never bunny another player's character without their permission.

Name: Hugō Colthearts (Hue - go Colt - hearts)
    Gender: Male
    Age: 16

Hometown: Ecruteak City, but, he traveled to Kanto a few months prior.

Appearance: Hugō is a little bit on the slim and mean side, who does weigh around 160 pounds, and also has a height of 5'9. He has bristly, short black hair that has bangs that almost extends to his top shoulders, and alongside his slightly slim 5 fingers on each hand as well as his slightly slim 5 fingers on each tone, his overall skin tone resembles that of a Asian young boy, has it's a pasty yellow color. Speaking of which, while Hugō has the physique and posture of a young woman, he is indeed male, which made a lot of confusion during his wake, but, he became accustomed to it.

Hugō wears the traditional Japanese dress of a miko, which even today has remained essentially unchanged except for the lack of the slit-shoulder seam. It consists of a white jacket with sode-kukuri (cords) through the sleeves and open shoulders. He also wears strings called muna-himo which are attached to each lapel and tied in front to keep the garment closed. Hugō's kosode would be very much like a modern Kendo or Naginata Keikogi, with the sleeve fitting somewhat closely like a modern loose shirt and extending slightly past the wrist. The slits on the side of his hakama, and the openings at the sleeves and shoulders of her hitoe (jacket) showed the white kosode she sported. Hugō also wears a bright red nagabakama (a very long hakama), which includes the small board on the lower back. Finally, Hugō wears common tabi (socks) and rice straw sandals. It's all sported by a red Obi, or belt, over all his other garments.

Strengths / Interests & Goals: Hugō is a kind, and pretty gentle boy, and does act very feminine at times. His mannerisms are pretty straight-forward, as he speaks in a refined, and dignified tone, addressing people as he would like to be addressed - with the utmost respect. He does like getting into arguments, since he's pretty open minded to a variety of topics and cultures. He does enjoy nature, as he tends to enjoy spending most of his life outdoors, taking a look at wild pokemon, and other plant / wild life that's around. His main interest is mainly into pokemon though, as he always loved to see what kinds of pokemon lived in each habitat, as well as why the area around them is hospitable. Battling was something that is relatively new to Hugō, so, he isn't exactly knowledgeable in the field, but, he is always generally willing to learn and try new things.

Weaknesses: Hugō can be pretty naive, meaning he can instantly believe a ridiculous story or idea and call it a fact. His naivety does lead him in sticky situation sometimes, but, he always believed that it was better to believe in someone rather than not having a certain degree of trust altogether. He's also a bit paranoid and can frighten, and be shy around people, new and old. Call this a habit, what you will, but, his paranoid nature does call him to shout and scream a variety of times, even though he doesn't intend to. But all in all, he''s a gentle boy with a nice heart - he just has to work on his paranoia.

Family: Hugō was born in Ecruteak City, where he was born with a mother and grandmother, with his little sister being born just a few years after him. More importantly, Hugō was born as a member of the Colthearts family clan. The Colthearts are a family who are known for communicating with spirits, and with the land of the dead. The leader, and master of the Colthearts clan was the one who's connection to the spirit world, and the land of the dead was the strongest of them all. The master of the Colthearts was always part of the main branch family, while the other members of the family was simply called a branch family, in which a member of the branch family would never be a master, because their spiritual power was too weak compared with the members of the main family. Finally, the "spiritual power" of the Colthearts clan, was always inherited by the females of the group.

Hugō was born not a female, and thus, he didn't possess any spiritual energy. He was also born as a member of the branch family, where his mother was the young master's aunt. In any case, being born a male, Hugō was sometimes looked down upon in the family, for not being a female, even though his physique and posture resembled that of a female. Hugō did not really mind having any spiritual power, though. As a young boy, Hugō constantly surrounded himself with wildlife, and he even read books all about pokemon picture books, and light novels about pokemon adventures. One day, when he finally turned 15, he decided - it was time to go on a pokemon adventure on his own.

His mother was reluctant for him to go at first, since she was worried that Hugō didn't learn much about the outside world. However, with all due respect, Hugō knew that even though he did not possess any powers of his own, he still wanted to help the family get the respect that they deserved in some way. Plus, he knew that power wasn't everything. A person can become just as kind, and just as gentle as the next, no matter who they were. Finally, his mother simply didn't care anymore. He decided to let him go, to do whatever he pleases. While Hugō did sense his mother's anxiety and resentment towards him, he also vowed to find a way to reunite the broken ties between the Main and Branch family.

Starter pokémon: Espeon, female, Confusion - Quick Attack - Swift - Psybeam - Shadow Ball

Second pokémon Growlithe, male, Ember - Bite - Fire Fang - Agility - Protect

    Name: Jara Callheart

    Age: 18

    Gender: Female

    Hometown: Cinnabar Island

    Appearance:
Jara is fairly tall, for a girl, at 168 cm. But she makes up for it by being almost unreasonable skinny, something her mother has been worried for for years. Jara was never big on the physical side; she skipped gym class whenever she could and she preferred to watch the waters around the island rather than dive down and swim in them herself. Her skin is appropriately tanned for someone having lived on Cinnabar all her life, and has weak birthmarks and freckles here and there. Her hair is a dark brown color, slightly wavy and very long. If she lets it out it almost covers all of her back. Usually, she keeps it in a ponytail though. But as thick as her mane is, it still looks big when put up. Her big, alert eyes are a grayish blue color.

On her journey, her standard wear will consist of a sky blue tunic, a gray coat with a thin hood and silvery metal details, black leggings and gray boots. She carries her stuff in a black shoulder bag with red details. On a red headband that is usually put up to rest over her forehead, sits a pair of thick goggles. Their thick frames encapsulate technology that Jara has pieced together over the past few years. Apart from just shielding from rain or wind, the goggles come with a sun filter, night vision and heat seeking vision. The only jewelry she wears is a silver medallion with an amber colored stone in a silver chain around her neck. It was a gift from her father some years back. Jara only wears a little bit of make up in her usual life, and will probably not bother with it at all on the journey.

    Family:
Mother (Fridah), father (Jorgen), 5 years older twin brothers (Jasper and Jacob). Fridah has been a caretaker at Blaine's gym for over a decade and for a few years now her sons have begun training there with fire pokémon. Jorgen works as a researcher's assistant at the pokémon lab on Cinnabar Island. He has not gotten the chance to drive any of his own research yet, but he claims that he is quite comfortable working under the sometimes harsh lead of his boss. While Jorgen has always claimed that Jara is a fine young woman on a bright path to the future, Fridah has been worrying more and more into Jara's teenage years that she is wasting her time with her machines and pokémon theories instead of getting good grades in school. A compromise was made between them and forced onto Jara: she would try to become a pokémon trainer instead of immediately go on to further studies or get some "unworthy" mechanic job after high school. So here she is now.

    Interests and goals:
At the age of 9, Jara ran away from home after a dispute with her older brothers, saying that she would find a wild pokémon of her own and become a trainer just like they were. Unfortunately, the weather was getting stormy that day and by the time her despairing parents finally found her, halfway up the volcano ridge, Jara was not alone. She had an ice pokémon seemingly protecting her, and she claimed to have seen a huge creature in the sky causing this storm. Even though she gave up the thought of being a trainer after this, the event shaped Jara in several ways.

    Philosophy
She has never stopped thinking about what the shining creature in the sky in the midst of the storm could have been. Nobody seems to know of a pokémon fitting the description, but then again, she doesn't exactly remember too well what she really saw. She has from time to time believed that it wasn't a pokémon at all. But what else could it be? Over the years, this deepened into questions like why are we here, where do we come from, are we alone and where are we going. Jara certainly thinks a lot. Too much, some say.

    Technology
The best explanations to any questions though, she has found in science. Following her father to work now and then sparked her interest. She is rather fascinated by technology and how fast it's advancing, and one of her recently discovered hobbies is to fiddle around with technical stuff and try to modify it. As soon as she encounters a machine she doesn't understand, she does what she can to read up on it and grasp the concepts - preferably even the details. Of course, the most exhilarating thing is to take the machine apart and put it back together again.

    Searching
One of the main reasons Jara finally agreed to go on a pokémon journey was that she realized that she can look for clues around Kanto about the mysterious creature in the sky. It is one of her life goals to finally get to see it again, and preferably also figure out what it is and why it was at Cinnabar that day.

    Gyms
Jara will take on the gym challenge, and as such she has dutifully acquired a License and basic equipment such as pokéballs and potions. However, neither she nor Piloswine feel very battle-brained and Jara worries a bit if this goal is really a realistic one for her journey. Maybe Charmander can fix that, though.

    Strengths:
    + Guts
Growing up with two older brothers who always took each others' side taught her to stand up for herself and not take any remark or condescending comment without a proper retort. This does not mean that she recklessly accepts challenges or plunges head first into crazy opportunities though. Only that she isn't easily put down by other people.

    + Brains
Jara was never at the top of class in school, when it came to grades. She was way too much of a daydreamer to put 100% effort into stuff she had to do. But that did not mean that she was not very intelligent. When it came to things she chose to do, Jara easily excelled. Such as learning how to wire and weld and fiddle around with technology and machines to make them do what she wanted, or reading up on old pokémon myths because she simply wanted to know more. She also is not easily fooled.

    + Hope
For some reason, Jara's deep ponderings and will to dive down into the things she care about has made her a very hopeful person. Chances are you will never see her despair completely in a given situation. Oh, she will probably panic if things get rough, and she might be really nervous at times. But the thought of something being completely hopeless has never really occurred to her. The one exception could be if she ever found herself completely alone - but that remains to be seen.

    Weaknesses:
    - Trust
Jara mostly only wants to trust and believe in those she feels has superior intelligence than her. Also, people who are too kind or nice off the bat can even come across as a bit dumb in her eyes. Because she values intelligence, she is also suspicious of anyone claiming to know a lot of things until they prove it.

    - Monophobia
She has developed a fear of being alone. She always kept Swinub around, and even as a Piloswine he really feels like a person to her and they go together almost everywhere. Except for school these days - Piloswine was apparently a bit too bothersome to keep in the classroom, compared to a tiny Swinub. But Jara is really worried that she one day will end up completely alone somewhere. Without her family, without other people around, and without even Piloswine. She has sometimes had nightmares about this, and the whole thing possibly stems from when she ran away and ended up alone on the volcano those years ago, before Swinub found her.

    - Selfish
It's nothing she is overly proud of or even completely aware of, but if Jara gets a choice between doing something that benefits herself or someone else, she would quickly put her own needs first. Of course she wouldn't want to harm anyone on purpose, but somewhere at the core of her being, she knows that she's got to take care of herself before she can take care of any others. It might be an effect of her monophobia. This trait is somewhat bent when it comes to her parents and Piloswine, as they obviously care a lot about her and make her feel guilty for it. But like I stated before, this is happening somewhat subconsciously - her existential ponderings haven't reached this far. Yet.

    Spr_2s_221.png

Starter pokémon: Piloswine (male) Powder Snow - Mud Slap - Strength - Protect - Sandstorm - Mist
Bio: Nobody really knows how this Swinub ended up wandering the volcano ridge on Cinnabar Island. The cheerful Ice/Ground pig followed her home, despite the warm weather, and he has been her pet ever since she first refused to hand him over to her father for research. About a year ago he evolved, but he kept his friendly and docile temperament. Not exactly enjoying the thought of going into battle.
    Spr_2s_004.png

Second pokémon: Charmander (male) Scratch - Ember - Smokescreen - Fire Fang - Counter - Dig
Bio: When it was decided that Jara would go on a pokémon journey around Kanto, her mother got her a Charmander as a farewell present. This little creature isn't quite in tune with Jara yet and is a bit too gutsy and feisty for Piloswine to quite understand all the time. But Jara keeps telling herself that Charmander's behavior can make him grow into an astonishing battler. Eventually.

  • I'm going to reserve something as well!

    Name: Mia Kendrick

    Age: 19

    Gender: F

    Hometown: Vermillion City

Appearance: (picture is fine, but you can do a written description if you want to)

Interests and goals: Mia is a perfectionist. If something isn't working, she isn't trying hard enough. She always tries to claim responsibility, and she often finds herself in over her head with all the things that she's taken up. It's certainly a stressful life, but to her, it's what you need to make it in this world. Everyone successful is hard-working, and if you want it done right, you've got to do it yourself. Her parents are hard workers, and that got them a nice house, a nice car, and sent their daughter to another region to study at a well-known university.

Mia's emotions are difficult to read. If she's annoyed, and if you're perceptive enough, it's still possible to sense a slight twinge of enjoyment from her, and if she's happy, she still faintly projects the feeling that she would rather be somewhere else. In other words, she's rather enigmatic, and to have her as a friend means getting used to it.

She went to Pewter City and started the Pokémon League Challenge as a release. The pressure of all her work led her to finally take a break and go see the Kanto region, which - other than the city where she lives - is rather foreign to her, having come from Hoenn originally.

Family: She grew up with her parents in Slateport City, Hoenn, before moving to college in Vermillion to study History. Nowadays, she lives with her roommate Sara.

Strengths: (positive personality traits, things you are skilled at etc)

Weaknesses: (negative personality traits, things you are bad at or afraid of etc)

    Starter pokémon: Mawile, [details soon]

Second pokémon: (OPTIONAL! If you have caught a Kanto pokémon on your way to Pewter City, state its species, gender and moveset here. It cannot have evolved, unless it's Butterfree or Beedrill. Those are actually okay!)

  • I loves me a Snorlax! I intend on letting Return be the ultimate attack! The power of FRIENDSHIP!

Anyways, I'll have my SU finished pretty soon. I've been looking forward to a roleplay like this for a while.

    Name: Jordan Kaleel Jr.

    Age: 21

    Gender: Male

    Hometown: Saffron City, Kanto

    Appearance:

    tumblr_muu4j2goIK1rl66y8o1_500.png

Disclaimer: I do not own the artwork. I found this by searching "rich boy pokemon" on google images. :)

Interests and goals: Jordan is a kid who grew up having expensive hobbies. His main interest was stone-collecting. When he was a child, one of his rich uncles gave him an Everstone for his birthday. The child was fascinated by how the stone looks and how it suppresses a Pokemon's capability to evolve. Since then, he uses his allowance money into buying more stones, a hobby his parents' thinks to be useless. He had amassed a huge collection of common stones, like Hard Stone and the evolutionary stones, but he has a few rare ones like a piece of Old Amber.

While he has no intention of really becoming a trainer, his family pushed him too much, as each of them had been great trainers during their prime and it is hight time for Jordan to take on the Kaleel tradition. He thought of the journey as a bigger opportunity for him to collect the rarer stones. In fact, he though he might as well scourge the region for the Mega Evolution stones and collect them.

Family: Jordan Kaleel Jr. is the youngest among the four offsprings of Jordan and Maria Kaleel, one of the biggest stockholders in the Silph Co. Ever since he was a child, he never experienced hardships in life, financially speaking. His family had been well-off, primarily because of the determination and hardwork of his grandfather. His siblings, two brothers and one sister, were professionals in their respective fields. The oldest became a doctor and is working overseas. The second one, the sister, is a gym leader in Hoenn, the third in their family, and the one before Jordan is an electrical engineer, working in the Kanto Powerplant.

Strengths: Jordan Kaleel Jr., on the whole scheme of things, is a huge optimist. He believes that, given the right effort and time, everything will turn out to be fine and right in the end. This personality of his seemed to be his driving force in his belief that he can collect all of the Mega Stones in his hands during his journey. Hey, he had the time and the proper motivation to exert the effort, so what could go wrong?

Also, he is a social person, such that he loves being with people. Being raised in a rich family forced him to talk to various people his parents introduced him to. He developed the right etiquette and tact for such social gatherings, especially among the wealthy. He kept on telling himself that once this adventure started, he could use his learnings for the general masses.

Weaknesses: He is vain man. Jordan believes that among his peers (and that is a lot of peers), he thinks he is the best in any field. While he is right most of the time, people who meet him for the first time seems to be annoyed with him, with his air of superiority. However, this is partly because of his wealthy upbringing, being forced to compete for the best spot in the world of the best.

Emotions easily get hold of Jordan. He is quick to anger and prone to crying. He has a short temper for some people, and most people have short temper for him, especially those who doesn't know him on a personal level. Smallest things annoy him. He gets itchy when things go wrong. He say the most hurtful things when he is angry or sad.

    Name: Mauve Banzett

    Age: 21

    Gender: Male

    Hometown: Ecruteak City, Johto

    Appearance:
    Spoiler:

Interests and goals: Mauve has a certain taste in Pokemon, and loves to befriend any Pokemon he falls in love with. He also likes to catch up on his studies, even when he's already out in the world. Mauve tries to keep his mind as sharp as possible. His goal is to be one of the greatest trainers of all, just like his mother. At first, Mauve wanted to be a Top Coordinator and follow in her footsteps, but he decided battling Gyms would be the choice for him.

Family: Mauve grew up with only his mother, Sevreen Banzett, as his father was never in the picture. She never spoke of his father as well. Aside from telling Mauve at a young age that he, "isn't with us anymore." Mauve was raised in the Johto region, as his mother decided to retire from her successful Coordinating career to teach the forgotten art of Pokemon dancing in Johto. That, and to raise her son in a more calm environment.

Strengths: Mauve has Pokedex level knowledge of many, many Pokemon. He can tell you the type of any Pokemon just by looking at it, and much more useless information. He also seems to be able to understand his Pokemon, to a certain degree. Thus, being able to connect with his Pokemon to a much closer degree. Mauve's quite a decent battler. Having been taught by a high class Coordinator, he was taught a lot about battling, and even practiced with some of Sevreen's Pokemon. One of which being her Vileplume, named Morticia.

Weaknesses: Mauve is not very good at "playing well with others." Basically, it means he doesn't like to be around other people. That being said, he never really had much human interaction, as he was home schooled by his mother, and he could only play with his mother's Pokemon. Also, some of Mauve's Pokemon like to "love" on him from time to time. When Mauve gets close enough to certain Pokemon, they practically attack him with their love. This can be very hassling during battle. And, lastly... Mauve has a great dislike towards Fire-type Pokemon, and is terrified of large fires. If it's candles, or some form of controlled fire, Mauve doesn't mind. But, put him near a wildfire, he will quickly panic. This is because his mother's dance studio was once set ablaze by some reckless trainers with Fire-type Pokemon. Mauve was nearly burnt badly, but his mother saved him AND beat down the trainers with her Hydreigon, Maleficent. And thus, Mauve has developed a great distaste towards anything fiery in nature.

Alright, this is looking like quite the awesome repertoire of players already! Thanks for your interest, guys :) Give me a poke as soon as your SU is done, so that I don't try to review unfinished work.

@ MurkMire, your character is interesting! Only thing I'd like you to do is perhaps think about his character as a whole once more and see if you can add another weakness or flaw of some kind? Not being used to people but having clingy pokémon isn't quite enough to balance his cool positive traits out in my eyes ;) If you really can't think of anything that can fit well though, I guess you are good to go as you are. But try!

Been a while since I joined any RPs, especially journey RPs, so I'll give this one a shot. Adventure's a fun GM. I'd like to reserve, please.

Don't worry too much about reserving, guys. Just get a SU up if you want in (but you can of course state your interest if you don't have time to make a SU right now!). I don't think it's a bother if there are many players, since you can always choose whom to post with and it's unlikely that things will get cluttered IC.
