  • If it's a once in a blue moon minor prank or misdemeanor for a special occasion then I can sympathize with the saying, if it's something along the lines of setting a retirement home on fire in the middle of the night while the people inside are still sleeping then not so much.

Why do you sympathise with it? I've never heard 'girls will be girls'. The excuse for them not getting punished for something minor shouldn't be gender-based.

I sympathize with it because I used to do the occasional prank back when I was younger but nothing too extreme back then. Fyi I'm a dude on here despite my profile showing itself as female.

Sorry but I don't see boys or girls getting any real punishment besides from a warning or lecture if it's a first time offense and not even a big one at that, if it's a constant stream of repeat offenses then I can't imagine them getting off as lightly regardless of gender. And no I was not implying that the punishment was gender based so please don't twist my words around thank you.

  • Uh, yeah, boys are naturally act out more. It has nothing to do with socialization, it's just biological; there are differences in the brain even at that stage in development. Let people embrace who they are. The most depressing story I've heard is a family where a boy was having a lot of problems and his parents said something like "why won't he play with the dolls we give him?" HE'S A BOY, LET HIM GO OUTSIDE AND ROLL AROUND IN THE MUD AND PLAY COPS AND ROBBERS. These are the worst sort of parents, that care more for their political agenda than raising their darn kid.

I did not mean to twist your words. It is gender-based because you sympathise with a gender-based phrase used to justify causing trouble. In general I agree that minor first offences shouldn't be punished, which has nothing to do with 'boys will be boys' or the current topic of differences in treatment of girls and boys, but that wasn't exactly clear from your post, at least to me. I apologise for my misinterpretation, but your meaning really wasn't that obvious!

I sympathize with it if it's a first time minor misdemeanor at a young age but if it's more extreme like setting a nursing home on fire as I said earlier then it's not as easy to be as lenient imo. But regarding the saying used to justify the actions of pseudo deviant kids at times I believe that people expect young boys to be more violent and destructive than girls the same age for the most part, granted girls do get themselves in trouble too but they're usually more subtle about it since not many people would expect them to get in trouble as often and they tend to be overlooked as suspects for the most part imo even if they do end up being the one responsible for said misdemeanor.

Btw I can be rather confusing at times while trying to juggle multiple convos so forgive the rather oddly constructed posts there lol.

  • I agree with it completely lol. It's simply not true that boys and girl start off identically - As twocows said,

Saying that boys shouldn't behave as the sort of "boys" discussed in this thread when they're more or less wired to do so is going against how they're, for the most part, born. It's like telling someone born gay that they're not allowed to be gay, or like forcing someone naturally quiet to go to every possible party and social gathering. It's trying to make them into something which, for the most part, they simply aren't.

When it comes to brains, it's been demonstrated that a gay male's brain is structured similar to a straight female's.

^ Actually, love, it hasn't. It has similarities, but all brains... do?Get out of here please with your ignorant and undereducated facts. All brains are structured similar. We ALL start out with a female brain, and a female body, it's the hormones that signal it to stop the development of the female body and to build the male genitalia. The region of the brain you're probably referring to is the amygdala in which a person(gay or not) who is strongly introspective or emotional will have this region of the brain developed more closely towards a female as they are naturally more emotional. Please, don't talk your crackerjack brain science unless you actually know what you are talking about.

There's much more than amygdala in there.

    Comparitive studies on Homosexuality

October 27, 2004 - Brain response to putative pheromones in homosexual men (https://www.pnas.org/content/102/20/7356.full.pdf+html)

February 27, 2008 - PET and MRI show differences in cerebral asymmetry and functional connectivity between homo- and heterosexual subjects (https://www.pnas.org/cgi/reprint/105/27/9403)

And, Alley Cat, I'd appreciate it if you would cut it with the condescending and insulting tone.

I think boys and girls should be treated the same way - who cares if their brain structure is different. Brain structure varies loads within a sex too, girls can be energetic, rowdy, etc. as well so saying that it's OK for boys but no girls is stupid. It might be OK to think this, with regards to your own child, to cut them some slack now and again but if teachers started letting boys off of bad behaviour more than girls it would create huge feelings of inferiority.

Also, Jay_37040, publications that support the idea that the the gay male brain is more similar to a females than a male's brain is are in the minority. There are plenty of theories and experiments into it but most have either very marginal results or just weren't using significant samples - for instance the second article you linked only used about 20 individuals for each category, the first only has 12.

(Also I can't get over how the 'Proceedings of National Academy of Science' uses 'PNAS' [Pee-Nas] as their abbreviation.)

That these studies are few does not negate their validity. Nor does the sample size used in the studies. I have not seen, as of yet, any study which has contradicted these. If you are aware of such studies, I'd love to see them.

(I can't link these directly from the database I'm using as its university access only but here are the references)

No difference in neural activity between homosexual and heterosexual males during erotic stimulation (in this case being shown pornography).
Kagerer, S., et al., 2011, "Neural activation toward erotic stimuli in homosexual and heterosexual males," Journal of Sexual Medicine, Vol. 8, 11.

Difference in Grey-Matter regions in homosexual->heterosexual women, but no difference in homosexual->heterosexual men.
Ponsenti, J., et al., 2009, "Brain structure and sexual orientation," Sexuologie, Vol. 16, 3-4.

Lesbian women differ to heterosexual males and females, however the difference is not significant.
Rahman, Q., et al., 2008, "A comparative analysis of functional cerebral asymmetry in lesbian women, heterosexual women, and heterosexual men," Archives of Sexual Behaviour, Vol. 37, 4.

Why do they have such cringey journal names :(

Whilst these don't mean that your studies are incorrect, it does raise the issue of significance and whether findings with such small sample sizes could be down to chance, or due to an element of the selection procedure. For example perhaps if only very effeminate gay men came forward, and only very butch heterosexuals also, then the difference would be much more profound than an average comparison. With such small numbers such as 20 and less it's highly possible.

While the small sample size is of some concern, it can be used as a starting point for further study. As you say, it doesn't mean the studies are incorrect, but if a larger sample size were to be used, it would help confirm or refute the conclusions in these two studies.

A couple of points: in the first study you cite, the title suggests there was no difference in neural activity when participants were shown pornographic images. I expect this to be the case with either heterosexuals or homosexuals as visual stimuli is generally processed in the same way. However, the one study I offered, relied not on visual stimuli, but on putative pheromones. These two stimuli, i believe, would most likely illicit two completely different responses in the brain, especially since or reaction to visual stimuli can be influenced by many other factors such as personal likes and dislikes.

The third study you cite is probably accurate given the subjects studied, however, I question as to why homosexual males were excluded from the study. Given the accepted view that a female's sexual orientation is more fluid than a male's, it would have been helpful in that study to also compare homosexual male brains with those of the others. Remember, in the second study that I cite, PET and MRI tests showed that there were differences in cerebral asymmetry and functional connectivity between homo- and heterosexual subjects, both male and female.

Regardless, however, I think what all the studies cited show is that there is a need for further study.

Now as for your comment "Why do they have such cringey journal names," I can only guess that the researchers' sense of humour has something to do with it. I mean really, "Sexuologie?" Is that even a word? LOL

  • It's a wonder nobody has brought this up yet.
You can't call most people 'bad'.
There's so many people saying 'bad' but people aren't simiply bad, they all act different depending on the time, age, people they're around and lifestyle. -this excludes such people who are on the berge of insanity, that there's no justifying-
Just seperating them into 'bad boys' and 'good boys' makes no sense.
The reason I have brought that up is because while people may do bad things; it doesn't make them bad. I've -and I'm sure many others- have done heartless actions, without thinking, it doesn't make them bad.

Onto the topic, I can't really share personal experences because I have only heard that used in media. But I will say this, girls can make just as cruel actions as boys.

Boys are generally more lible to making bad decisions because we get testosterone. While girls are gonna be more mild mannered with their estrogen..... its all in the horemones kiddies.
