  • Ever tried to get into something, but, the fans had turned you away, I'd love to get into Doctor Who, but, the fans keep turning me away, with their claim of superiority over other fanbases and arrogance (https://www.theregister.co.uk/2013/11/15/lets_get_doctor_who_beat_one_direction_to_no_1/).

Some Directioners and Beliebers make it hard for people to like 1D and JB with their strange nature, it's mainly the younger fans though any Directioner/Belieber I follow is pretty nice and quite intelligent.

Since I never really associate much with fandoms of the things I like (except online, to a varying degree), I don't really care about what a fandom is like when I decide what to "get into" next. Doctor Who, for example, all I had heard and seen was doodles and art of some dude in a fez and striped scarf. I really had no idea what to expect, because I don't usually dig into the activities of fandoms I'm not part of. And neither should you, Doctor Who is great! (especially when you reach the 11th Doctor seasons, and plot actually starts happening lol)

Taking another example though. The general belief seems to be that if you like Homestuck, you've got several pairs of horns and troll symbol shirts in your wardrobe. Fans like me who don't really feel the need to dress up in order to enjoy the franchise can feel a bit intimidated and, well, bothered by the part of the fandom that makes others go "eh, really? but you look so normal" when you tell them that you're into Homestuck. No offense to cosplayers, but this has happened to me, okay O.o

  • I actually tried to join an Elder Scrolls forum once, but the abundance of role playing and using middle age-esque words in every thread was extremely annoying. Listen, I'd love to talk to you about which DLC was the best, but you don't really have to call me a milk drinker and pretend that your race is being discriminated. It's kind of annoying and to someone who doesn't really enjoy pretending to be someone else it just comes off as being childish. =/

Yeah I've definitely noticed that. Like if you see a conversation between a die hard Homestuck fan and a newcomer to the fandom the diehard is going to assume that the newcomer is a) completely caught up and b) understands absolutely anything and everything and is willing to hold a solid conversation with you about Homestuck theory and prediction over future chapters and how it's gonna end, etc etc. It's definitely really annoying. A lot of fandoms are like that, and it can be really intimidating.

I can't think of a fandom that's really turned me away, though I did kind of like the idea of watching My Little Pony a couple years back but the absolute insanity of the bronies was offputting. It was mainly on tumblr and some forums, but idk they're just a different kind of crazy. Not all of them, but the brunt of them anyway.

  • MLP has to be one of the most off putting fandom I've seen. That and Marvel Movie/TV fans. You try to explain comic book things (calmly, mind you) and they either think you're lying because they've never picked up a comic, or try to bs you with sheer nonsense because they can't name any characters that aren't mainstream

  • It'd be MUCH easier to get into the Brony fandom these days, as they have either declined in members or have been very quiet about My Little Pony lately, making MLP easier to become a fan of, I don't see Bronies being arrogant and claiming a day as their's just because it is a milestone anniversary since the show started or it is a holy day like Tara Strong's birthday.

  • Going off on the MLP thing, I used consider myself a big MLP fan/Brony , but I haven't been into the series much since season 3. It's still a good show, just haven't had the time or effort to want to watch the episodes. On that another note, it's even hard considering myself a "Brony" anymore. First off the bronies are stereotyped as the people who " post, draw and get off to porn of cartoon ponies" and many people (especially Tumblr) seem to be appalled by that factor. While I know it's true and that not all bronies do that, it still disgusts me to an extent. Second,a lot of bronies overreact to everything introduces to the series. The main character, Twilight Sparkle gains wings in the season finale and becomes an alicorn/princess, every jumps to conclusions before watching the episodes. The show gets a movie called "Equestria Girls" that takes the main 6 ponies and turns them into humans and makes them normal high school girls, every flips a table and says it will suck before watching it again. Although, when fans draw humanized versions of the ponies in the show, people love it. It's good that after people watched the , they said it wasn't bad and enjoyed it immensely. HOWEVER, they just announced an Equestria Girls sequel coming this year and guess what? People lose it and hate it before watching it. Bronies jump to conclusions and judge things introduced to the show way too early and it really annoys me. This is why I'm not sure if I like being part of the Brony fandom. I'm still a fan of the show though.

When a fanbase is obnoxious I'm usually inspired to check out whatever made them go crazy. The only time a fanbase puts me off is when I know a li'l bit about their obsession but I'm not interested in the first place (MLP, Doctor Who, Homestuck, etc).

  • BBC shows have some of the absolute worst fans (DW, Sherlock, Downton Abbey) They seem so stuck up and spiteful when you try to converse or even ask a question, it's pretty shameful. Everyone starts somewhere, and if someone is curious, wouldn't it be better to offer help and nudge them in the right direction, rather than scoffing at them?

I've been a fan of My Little Pony for ten years, so I remember a time before Bronies existed and I remember when they started flooding in. I definitely agree that Bronies have soiled MLP's repuation. . . A lot of them aren't very lovable or tolerable :x I'm glad that some of them are, though.
But what will always make my blood boil is when the previous generations get dissed. Even if Bronies don't like the older generations they should at least be grateful the previous generations exist because if they didn't, there wouldn't be a fourth generation for the Bronies to go crazy over xP

  • A lot of bronies are off-putting. It's why I stick mostly to /mlp/ and such. To be honest though, people say it's disgusting if someone clops, but then again, why exactly are you caring what people masturbate to?
I remember when I used to be an obnoxious brony once. Good times, and bad at the same time.
Tried to get into Homestuck, fanbase of that put me off that. Fanbase of Regular Show and Adventure Time also put me off those cartoons. Guess there's just lots of obnoxious people in every fanbase.

Especially tumblrites when it comes to Doctor Who. They're incredibly protective and even if they haven't been apart of the series since the beginning, they'll fight tooth and nail to defend their favorite characters, be it Oswald(?) or Clara or the doctors or what have you. I don't know as I don't watch it myself and probably never will because of it's extremist fandom. >_>

  • The MLP fanbase is probably one of the most obnoxious ones I've ever experienced. Some of the bronies at school were quite nasty.

The BBC fans were even worse. There was a guy who dropped several F-bombs at my friend Frank. It was because Frank said that Downton Abbey is for snobs.

The Potterheads at my school were bad too, though most of them were just pathetic instead of outright nasty.

I've had a lot of issues with the Hetalia fandom. The ones at my school (who were almost exclusively female) were so crazy and nutty. There was this one girl who would squeal in delight whenever someone talked about a European country because she thought we were talking about Hetalia. She was a big fan of Poland, and it got annoying - especially for the Polish boy who she sat next to in history class and pestered frequently.

The Free! Iwatobi Swim Club fans can be bad too, though they're generally better than the above examples. I'm a swimmer and have a lot of guy friends who are swimmers, and one of them, Tom, is a huge fan of the show. He did a cosplay with his cousin (he was Nagisa and his cousin was Rei). When he posted it online, he got two dumb comments from yaoi fangirls, despite Tom saying that he was with his cousin. I still like the show, though I only talk about it with people who I know IRL.

    Oh god the Hetalia fandom.

I hate the fans that take any and every reference of a country and take it to be a Hetalia reference. I also don't like the ones that literally only care about yaoi.

I had a friend in 10th grade who was half Italian/half Japanese and she said Hetalia fans would always freak out about it.

Also i saw a post on tumblr reminding Hetalia fans not to make Hetalia fanart based on the Ukraine protests because of how disrespectful it is. I haven't actually seen any myself, mostly 'cause i stay far away from that crap, but i'm not even surprised.

Also I used to be a pretty big fan of Avatar: The Last Airbender but the shippers ruined it for me with their constant battles of Zutara vs. Kataang. I hated how there was this really clever and unique series with well-written characters and plot and all they cared about was shipping. Same thing with Zuko fangirls. Zuko was a really interesting character with a great character arc and all they cared about was how hot he was.

My Chemical Romance is actually a good band if you ignore the fandom and just enjoy the music. It's unfortunate they've broken up though. :( I was heavily involved with thee the MCRmy fandom several years ago during the band's Danger Days era and I'd admit, some of them are beyond obnoxious. I have met some of the nicest people through the MCRmy though , and I still talk to them today. Same goes for Fall Out Boy, Panic! At The Disco.

Adventure Time and Regular Show's fandom I've no problems with honestly. They just seem to have a bunch of nice people who appreciate the show from my perspective. Every fandom has bad fans it seems.

Eh, MCR's not really my thing, but I like a few of the songs off of Danger Days. The fans (Of which many are whiny 12-year old girls) drive me insane, though.

I definitely dislike the Nü Metal fandoms more than the MCR fandom, though. While the mall-goth shenanigans of a number of MCR fans are annoying, Slipknot and Korn fans are mostly just 13 year old boys trying to be "edgy".

The reason Adventure Time and Regular Show fans annoy me is because the ones I've met are smug hipsters who think their tastes in television makes them somehow superior to everyone else.

  • Actually most of the MCR fans I've known are over 12 and some are males, but I know those fans you're talking about, and those are the annoying ones. Though the MCR fans I know are very nice people. They've been there for me for so much and have supported me a lot over the last 3 1/2 years.

You've probably met the wrong Adventure Time/Regular Show fans. None of the ones I've met were smug hipsters and are nice and respectful.

I guess everyone experiences a certain fandom differently.
