  • Lol really? Russian and a communist? Or are you assuming the communist part? There's really no way to be certain unless he has a hammer-and-sickle flag hanging on the wall.
I know for a fact; it's not a guess. She even said out in the open in class that Communism is a part of her national identity and she wouldn't tolerate anything remotely anti-communist. I don't use the term lightly. I also had a socialist history teacher from ninth grade, but he was actually pretty cool and quiet about his beliefs. The second history teacher I had in highschool for the last three years was a liberal but wore a Che shirt not understanding that the "revolutionary" was a mass-murdering terrorist and Communist guerrilla. Still, he was my favorite teacher. Other than that, no, my teachers weren't too radical. But of the ones I've spoken I know for a fact, otherwise I'd never make such assertions.

That doesn't mean she is a communist.

I don't tolerate people bashing on Christians because so many of my friends are Christian, but I myself am Buddhist.

    I could have said

"Christianity is part of the identity of the crowd of kids I hang with and I will be pissed if you knock it"

you would have assumed I am Christian.

And you would have been wrong. QED

  • If you can't sort out your own beliefs you lose.
Uhh, I can. That's not really the point though. The point was indoctrination, not debate. Even though, my original post was about my support for science, not opposition.
You shouldn't care if they inject their beliefs if you are strong enough to stick to yours.
Uh, yeah, I should. This isn't the press, which by definition was intended since the 1700's to promote partisanship and push ideology. Tax-payer funded schools should be about education, not indoctrination. If this was a church getting tax payer dollars to promote political viewpoints, there'd be outrage. The same should apply to places of education. I know I don't want my taxes propping up Marxists pushing their beliefs on students.
Life's a simple game with thousands of ways to win or lose. You lose if you are weak enough that other people's beliefs shape your own more than your own heart does.
I'd agree if this was a college course, but not public schools for kids.

That doesn't mean she is a communist.

Wow, are you seriously doing this? She admitted she was a Communist. I spent a year in her classroom dude, I'm not assuming this from simple actions. She. Said. She. Was. A. Communist. You don't need to jump to her defense or try rationalizing her comments. I'm telling you this out of certainty, not speculation. If it was speculation I wouldn't have said anything.

As a school subject, I dislike science. it just holds no value for me in regards to my future. Hmm . . . may have something to do with my hopeless science teacher also . . . No, that couldn't possibly be it! XD

oh, please don't ever say this. You're breaking my heart. :( i mean, of course you can say what you want, but why limit yourself like this? Why not remain open to all avenues of knowledge and creation? You might surprise yourself.

Your 'heart' is a product of other people's beliefs. YOU LOSE FOREVER.

@Cobalt: Interesting. She sounds like a very scary lady. A lot of Russians are quite anti-communist due to having been thoroughly screwed by the Soviet system, but you do come across those who were pretty well off and lost power/prestige after the collapse.

  • I love science. What I hate is people thinking it's the be-all and end-all of knowledge. Newsflash: science in the modern sense has only been around for a couple of hundred years. We know nothing, basically, in the grand scheme of what can be known.

Not so much evolution. I mean being forced to watch Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth" despite objections from students, and then condescendingly being asked questions based on presuppositions. Being forced to do projects on why smoking should be illegal. Having to do papers on why America should have to use alternative energy. Being forced to do projects on why the government should fund embryonic stem cell research. Basically green propaganda and whatnot.

Who does that? I've never seen anything like it. I can see things like doing a project researching the actual scientific difference between current energy sources and proposed alternatives, but really nothing beyond that extent seems legal to be forced to watch. Anything more being forced is likely the teacher's fault and should be taken to a higher authority with complaints. The teacher can support it, just not force it on anyone beyond reasonable limits of education.

Lots of people have said that to me, but I'm firmly headed down the arts and language path, and taking Science (two periods every day next year) would severely hinder my ability to pursue this.

Oh yes, it was definitely teacher choice, doubt it was curriculum. I was more worried back then about the day ending than about complaining though.

  • Yeah I love science, particularly Chemistry. Physics isn't bad, neither is Biology (though I don't do Biology). Without it the human race would be a lot stupider. It's human nature to be curious and science fills that need easily.

  • It depends on what you define science as as well.

In the broader term, there is no way you can hate it, it's simply part of life.

Imo, science makes everything even more beautiful because it lets you comprehend the complexity of the world around us.

  • As a physics student at university (yeah, what a fun guy I am), I'd have to say that science is the keystone of civilisation and without it we wouldn't be here on the internet, on our PCs. On the school subject of science, I admit that I used to die during double periods of physics tutorials but it opens up a new and wonderful world.

That's ludicrous. I would have brought it up to the higher-ups or something; people shouldn't be allowed to teach pseudo-science and opinions. My education was actually pretty unbiased, except for a few teachers who kept making remarks that communism is ideally the best form of government (which is a big, heaping load).

Well, I think the Pokémon world demonstrated that it could be the form of government. There is private property within the Pokémon world so it is not communist. However, the Pokémon world is intrinsically left wing (free health care for Pokémon), while extrinsically right-wing (profit largely from the franchise.)

My biostats instructor was clearly left-wing though with his presentations... he didn't require us to do any projects or ask anything about it on the test.

  • Like most have said, I think science is a necessity to human-life and advancement nowadays. I'm currently taking Biology I in the 9th Grade and I have to say, it's very interesting. So, no, I do not dislike science.

  • Intrestingly, in America how much choice do you have over the schools subjects you do? Perhaps someone could fill me in?
