Finally, an update :D We're still inserting tiles, so for now, just have a look at these battle backgrounds by FMP. Please, no one use these, they are for certain people only. We will find you if you steal them. Also, they are a wip, so expect them to improve. Its just to give you something to look at for the time being. Remember, theft is well... theft. And you'd have to be pretty low to steal someone elses work. Remember that.

Aha! So there is room for an English major in a pokemon programmer's world! Here's what I'm thinking, Mac: Pokemon games tend to have terribly linear plots, so what we want here (to mix things up) is something completely new to pokemon. Sure, we've seen events such as a sick pokemon who requires medication, but that's really just a plot device used to steer the player towards the next gym (rather than down some path that'll come later); so we want a pure side story. I'm thinking something along the lines of a feud - something completely unrelated to the government, to the rangers, or to the plot at all except for the fact that you're required to help them before leaving town and heading to the next gym. It's a small town off the beaten path, so maybe we're looking at a forbidden romance a la Romeo and Juliet (we could say there are now, and always have been, two families - the guy is from one the girl is from the other), a land dispute, or anything else.

I can whip something up pretty quickly but I'm kind of tired now... It can be as cliche or original as you'd like, as grown up or dumbed down as you like, but the basic gist of my pitch is an unrelated and completely story driven encounter. I'd probably have the player initially hear out the two sides, pick which one he thinks is in the right (this one couldn't be romance) and ally with them. If you like the idea it could even turn into a subplot, continuing in various forms later in the game and offering the player various rewards based on who they chose (maybe one leads to receiving pokemon x while the other leads to pokemon y in the end). Regardless, after the player makes his choice the other family would then turn hostile, fights would ensue, and you'd leave the town when the feud was completely resolved. Again, I can spin it however you want, make it as long or short as you want, etc... I tend to be relatively long winded (see this post), but I'm a solid editor and writer. Let me know what you think of the idea and I'll churn a quick draft out for you.

I've read through it, and I like the general idea. However, I don't want something to far off from the story. A side plot would be very good, but nothing to in depth. I'm sure you understand ^^ Once you get something written up, post it here (just wrap it in spoiler tags :D) and we'll all have a look. From the sounds of it, what you're going to come up with will be very good ^^ I'm looking forward to seeing it ;)

CONTEST
Alrighty people of the world, I've decided to have a little contest. The prize is a position as assistant event thinker-upper and Beta Tester (I couldn't think of anything else to call it :P)
The objective is to think up an intriguing event, complete with words, character names, and movements. The list of rules is in the spoiler below, as well as something to get you started:

So, I'm going to give you a little bit of an idea as to whats happening: You've just been chased into a ranger base, after escaping from two bounty hunters. Your Father then told you who they were, and then preceded to give you a Poke'dex. You have then left the ranger base, and are now standing, facing east, in Mior Canyon. To the East is Cherry Town, a small town that hosts the first gym, which is a grass type. There is the regular Pokecenter, and Mart, plus a few small houses. There is a cave at the top, and various houses. Your job is to think up something exciting that can happen after the gym. The current characters you ave been introduced to are: Rival, Dad, two bounty hunters, Mum, the Gym leader (who works for Enigma) and four other Rangers. I don't want anything corny like "Ooh ooh, I know!! Lugia can come and save everyone!!" Make it interesting, but also make it possible. We can script most things, but not everythings doable, as I'm sure most of you know. You can introduce more people to the town if you want, and you can also involve Enigma. Please do not refer to Enigma as "Team Enigma" and remember that they are not a sect or group, like they are in official games. They are the government. I'm looking forward to what you guys come up with, either post it here, or PM/VM it to me. Also, don't forget: Grammar is your friend. Well, its my friend, anyway, and anyone I find insulting it will be ignored. So, basically, if you post something like: "Ohk so heya go: Inigma can com in and tak ova the bais, and den you can excape" Not only will that be ignored, you may get a profile visit from a certain Maccer of Mega ^^

After the Gym, like most people would do, they would head up to the cave looking for a way to the next town. They walk through town and up to the cave entrance, but is stopped by a government agent. He says that they have seen a Ranger go in the cave, and is in the middle of tracking him down.

"Enigma: Hay! Kid! Don't go in there!"
Runs to player.
"Enigma: Don't go in that cave. We got a report from one of our Bounty Hunters that a Ranger had gone in this cave. We are investigating the area as we speak."
Enigma looks around.
"Enigma: You should head back to town for now. It's too dangerous for a kid like you."
Enigma walks you slightly into town.
"Enigma: Remember, don't go in that cave."
Enigma walks away. Suddenly, your rival runs up to you.
"Rival: Hero! There you are! I've been looking everywhere for you! Your dad was spotted by some Bounty Hunters, and ran into the cave on the outskirts of town, and now he's trapped inside! We need to find him and get him out of there before Enigma does! I'm going on ahead. See you in the cave."
Rival runs to cave. Then after you follow him and go in the cave, you look for your dad. When you find your dad and rival, he thanks you.
"Dad: Oh, Hero! You made it! Rival just got here, too! But there's not time to talk, we need to get out of here!"
The screen goes black and you are then in the Ranger base, talking with your dad.
"Dad: Thanks, Hero. I was almost caught. I should have stayed out of site. Now, you've beaten the Cherry Town Gym? Good. Your next destination for a Gym would be *insert town name*"
Then you walk out of the base and you then head to the next town.

Well, I hope you like it. And like I said, I'll try and work on some more sprites later.

Player walks to the lab and is greeted by a hostile scene: townspeople surround two men in lab coats with a third man in a suit off to the side.

???: Damnit, Valentine! I won't let you do this to us! This changes nothing for you. Nothing! I'll kill you!

Valentine: My dear Boris –

Pavlov: That's Dr. Pavlov to you!

Valentine: As I was saying, my dear Boris: you and my employer had an agreement – a contract, in fact – and your request is in direct violation with that agreement.

Pavlov: It's one machine, and one damn egg! It won't make a bit of difference if we use it once before passing it on. Mr. Valentine, you may be a man of funds but I've always been a man of action; I'll kill you if you attempt to take this opportunity away from me.

Valentine: I'd like to see you try.

Player steps up: Stop! I don't fully understand what's going on here, but this won't solve anything!

An Enigma officer walks in, the crowds depart silently.

Officer: I trust you can resolve this by yourselves, gentlemen? I have important business to attend to, and if I'm forced to return you'll both disappear. Am I understood?

Valentine+Pavlov: Yes sir.

Officer: Good, if either of you hear anything about the son of a ranger I expect you to inform me immediately. Is that understood?

Valentine+Pavlov: Yes sir.

Officer: I'll be off then. Good day to you, gentlemen.

Valentine (to player): So, you're the son of a ranger, eh? Don't look so surprised; your emotions are what gave it away in the first place. Don't worry, your secret's safe with me.
Player: You seem to be mistaken… but what exactly is going on here?

Pavlov: I was hired by a Mr. Barnes to develop a modified incubator to hatch the offspring of a species thought previously to be extinct. You see, the pokemon inside are essentially frozen without contact from their mother – no growth, no aging, no life. There are currently no known female specimens left in the world, but my assistant and I have managed to recreate that contact with a series of electrical stimuli.

Player: That's incredible! Does it really works?

Valentine: Oh it will, they just need a few more parts – a few more incredibly expensive parts – and should Boris here stay true to his word, the machine will be in my boss' hands in no time. If, however, he attempts to use it for himself, it will be ceased and funding will be pulled immediately.

Player: I don't understand, why can't you both use the machine?

Valentine: Tell them, Boris. Give him the full story, no more of your half truths and deception.

Pavlov: … there is… a chance that the machine will only have enough life to restore one egg to life. But even if that is the case we could just recreate it.

Player: Wait, so you're being paid to develop this technology but would have it for yourself?

Valentine: Exactly, I'm glad we see eye to eye.

Pavlov: This is my life's work! My life's work! I just need to know what's inside this egg… I need to know… please, I have no family, this egg's mother was my family. It was my life! You must understand, I beg of you!

Valentine: I'll tell you what. We have an industrious young man with us, and the son of a ranger, no less. Why don't we let him decide?

Pavlov: I… Okay. Please understand what I'm going through…

Valentine: That's quite enough Boris. He understands the law, and justice will be served. So what'll it be?

The player will then have the option of siding with either Boris Pavlov, the scientist, or Mr. Valentine and his wealthy boss. It's a question of emotion vs. justice, and your choice will matter. Siding with Valentine will lead to the closing of the lab and Pavlov turning on you later in the game in the form of an extra battle in a post-game dungeon. If you choose Pavlov, Valentine's powerful employer, Mr. Barnes, will close his mansion down to you and you'll see several of his agents sent to seek revenge for your choice later in the game.

If Pavlov:

Pavlov: Thank you! Thank you so much…

Valentine: Your funding is through, and you'll be hearing from our lawyers. And you (turns to player). You'll be hearing from us.

You'll then have to bring a prototype to various cities (the first of which being to the next town you're supposed to go to) in order to show off the technology and get support in the form of the missing materials. Once the pokemon is hatched, the device will break and he'll thank you profusely and tell you to take the pokemon, explaining that it deserves a trainer who will challenge and raise it, but asks you to stop in occasionally. Later on there will be more quests from Pavlov.

If Valentine:

Valentine: An excellent choice, my boy.

Pavlov: You… you're heartless. I'm taking the machine with me! Damn your decision! Damn you all! (To other man) Anderson, let's leave.

Valentine: Anderson, you have a family to feed – be reasonable and bring the device over here.

Anderson: I'm sorry Boris… I'm so sorry.

Pavlov leaves. You'll then bring valuable gems to exchange for the missing parts, and Anderson will help assemble the device. Once the pokemon is hatched you'll be given the pokemon and told that they have plenty more. You'll also be informed that Barnes wants to meet with you about a job opportunity, opening new missions later.

Regardless of who you choose, the other will report you to the Enigma officer and you'll be forced to leave town with the instruction of attaining the parts, and leading you to the next stop on your path. Should you choose to ignore the quest that'll be fine, but you'll miss everything that follows. I have some ideas for what the pokemon should be like, and for what the quests should be like, but there will be quests for both that would lead the player to believe he's made the right and wrong choice, depending on the quest.

I have a lot of ideas here, and if you like this at all I'd be happy to work with you on fleshing things out. Thanks for hearing me out : )

OK, so here's my plot:

One of the pokemons the gym leader uses is one of those that are specially created by Enigma.
So, as you win, he disappear while using this pokemon to spread a huge spores-cloud.
As you and your team have aspired this spores, they are running all through your system, and soon, plants will be growing inside your bodies, killing both you and your pokemons.
So, as a countdown starts, you have to find the cure before you run out of time!
For this, your dad teleport you to a secret underground like maze-ruins where an Enigma's lab especially dedicated to grass pokemon investigation is now running. You have to get to the chief and get the medicine, or you will be ancient history!
There's two options:
1) You continue playing as yourself.
2) The hero is put away in quarantine, you get to play as the rival/the opposite-sex hero, which will do anything to save you as you're her long time crush.

After successfully beating the gym leader, the hero exits the gym to find one of his/her fellow rangers waiting outside.

Ranger 1: Hero! Congratulations on getting your first badge! However, there is no time to relax. I waited for you to finish your battle to tell you that we have a lead on Enigma and what they might be planning to do next. We need to get back to the base immediately.

*Back at the Ranger Base*

Father: First of all, I want to thank all of you for meeting on such short notice.

Ranger 1: No problem!

Ranger 2: Were happy to hear whatever news you have on Enigma.

Father: Yes, the reason we are here. Well, as you all know, two bounty hunters have recently been giving us a bit of trouble. We have promising evidence that these bounty hunters have been hired by Enigma.

Ranger 3: That seems about right.

Ranger 4: Ya, we should have guessed...

Father: Yes, that part makes sense. However, what doesn't make sense is that we also have reason to believe that the bounty hunters were hired by "Cherry Town Gym Leader".

Rangers 1,2,3, and 4: WHAT!?

Father: Yes, this news is shocking and disturbing. Despite how hard this is to believe, we need to act fast if we want to uncover more leads on Enigma and their plans.

Ranger 1: Well, what can we do?

Father: This is where we need you Hero. Since you have already been targeted by the bounty hunters, you should be able to recognize them and follow them. Also, since you have just received you first gym badge, you should be able to handle "Cherry Town Gym Leader" if you run into him again.

Ranger 2: I agree. I think Hero would be the best suited for this operation.

Father: Hero, we need you to go to Cherry Cave and find the bounty hunters. This is where we believe Enigma will make contact with them again. Of course, we will hide in Cherry Town to supply you with back-up if you need it. Let's move out Rangers!

MAC, let me know if you like this so far. This is just a prelude to the event that I have in mind. But before I write down the whole event, let me know if I got any major facts wrong or if its just not what your looking for.

I love the idea, and you've written it out perfectly. The one flaw (and major thing I forgot to remember to tell you :\) is that in this game the player doesn't talk. I should have mentioned it earlier, but what I'm planning on doing instead is have characters close to Hero (eg the Rival) ask the questions that need answers. If you can re-write that to fit the limitation, I'm sure you'll have an excellent chance of winning the competition. Sorry about my mistake :P~

Hunter 1: We lost him! This is all your fault Clive!
At sound of yelling a (!) appears above the Hero's head and he runs behind a tree to eaves drop. Hunter 1 is pacing back and forth in front of the other (Clive).

Hunter 2 (AKA Clive): Wait why me?!

Hunter 1: It was your job to get that brat! You're lucky I put up with you.

Hunter 2: ... ... ...
Hunter 2 walks away, facing away from the other hunter.

Hunter 1: Right, lets get going. He can't be far!
Hunter 1 runs off, leaving Hunter 2 behind.

Hunter 2: (!!) ... ... Sigh.
Hunter 2 spins around and walks around before giving the !! sign, sighing, and slowly walking off screen.

Ok its not very exciting XD but I like random guys having fun characters.

Father: Yes, the reason we are here. Well, as you all know, two bounty hunters have recently been giving us a bit of trouble. We have promising evidence that these bounty hunters have been hired by Enigma.

Ranger 3: That seems about right.

Ranger 4: Ya, we should have guessed...

Father: Yes, that part makes sense. However, what doesn't make sense is that we also have reason to believe that the bounty hunters were hired by "Cherry Town Gym Leader".

Rangers 1,2,3, and 4: WHAT!?

Father: Yes, this news is shocking and disturbing. Despite how hard this is to believe, we need to act fast if we want to uncover more leads on Enigma and their plans.

Ranger 1: Well, what can we do?

Father: This is where we need you Hero. Since you have already been targeted by the bounty hunters, you should be able to recognize them and follow them. Also, since you have just received you first gym badge, you should be able to handle "Cherry Town Gym Leader" if you run into him again.

Ranger 2: I agree. I think Hero would be the best suited for this operation.

Father: Hero, we need you to go to Cherry Cave and find the bounty hunters. This is where we believe Enigma will make contact with them again. Of course, we will hide in Cherry Town to supply you with back-up if you need it. Let's move out Rangers!

MAC, let me know if you like this so far. This is just a prelude to the event that I have in mind. But before I write down the whole event, let me know if I got any major facts wrong or if its just not what your looking for.

Yes, it would be awesome to play someone else in a pokemon game. The problem is... scripting isn't capable of doing this. You can only play as 1 sprite and not more... Mabye there is a way using ASM hacking, but I'm Torzach's scripter and I know nothing about ASM xD. So we'd need to get an ASM hacker on the team, if it were possible to do this, using ASM code.

Errr...actually...It's quite possible to play as another OW...problem is that when you walk through transport places that take you to another map...you change back, and It's only one man that can do this...He's known among us as a legend and he was the one that actually saw the legendary Arceus in Reallll life...-_-' Yeah okay I lied, but he's a hell of a scripter though lol...I think Mac knows him.

Well, I'm sorry, but no sprite updates yet. I haven't had anytime yet to make a sprite. Plus, the only sprite I HAVE made is a little iffy on if it's a 'good concept' or not, since I made it before Vannah came back. And I don't know if she's been on lately either. But once she comes back, I'll see what she thinks of the sprite. And if I find more time, I will sprite something and post it up for comments.

OK, so here's my plot:

One of the pokemons the gym leader uses is one of those that are specially created by Enigma.
So, as you win, he disappear while using this pokemon to spread a huge spores-cloud.
As you and your team have aspired this spores, they are running all through your system, and soon, plants will be growing inside your bodies, killing both you and your pokemons.
So, as a countdown starts, you have to find the cure before you run out of time!
For this, your dad teleport you to a secret underground like maze-ruins where an Enigma's lab especially dedicated to grass pokemon investigation is now running. You have to get to the chief and get the medicine, or you will be ancient history!
There's two options:
1) You continue playing as yourself.
2) The hero is put away in quarantine, you get to play as the rival/the opposite-sex hero, which will do anything to save you as you're her long time crush.

Well, I'm back, again, fully recovered from a downed telephone and power line from last weeks storm.

West, your Dragonfly sprite (to lazy to check name) looks great. Well, the second one with the modified eye and wing, at least.

Mac, love the contest idea. Also, my vote goes to Romeo and Juliet guy, (again, too lazy to check your name; sorry!!) but, I would probably do it a lil' bit differently.
I would make the feud a power struggle between the ruling bodies of the nearby Enigmas. Especially since they haven't, at least not yet ;), learned your name. I would keep the idea of getting a different Poke depending on which side you choose, though. I've always loved the idea of getting different benefits in-game depending on your personal choice. Additionally, whichever faction(s) you don't side with, they will be of some importance throughout the game; however, what this importance is, I haven't quite decided yet XD.
