Anyway, currently watching a documentary on a sperm whale dissection. Fascinating.

Anyway, gotta take notes based on the documentary. Here's what I have so far:

Spoiler:

- Physeter macrocephalus
- This specific carcass being studied was located on the southeast shores of England
- Adult males can be over 20m and weigh over 60 tons
- Carcass was a male, as evidence by the presence of a penis. The penis is extremely flexible and allow the sperm whale to mate in any position (note: SOOO MANY PENIS AND SEX JOKES, XD).
- Top part of mouth had indentations that the teeth on the lower jaw fit into. Underneath the top part of the jaw, however, are buried teeth left over from ancestry. These teeth were no longer necessary once the whales begun hunting squid.
- Ancestors of whales used to live on land, but returned to the sea during evolutionary history.
- Two types of whales: mysticeti and odontoceti (baleen whales and toothed whales). Sperm whales belong to odontoceti.
- Blubber appears to be about 3 – 4 inches deep and have thick skin
o This helps with insulation to keep warm in cold depths
- Blubber, then fat, then muscle, then organs/tissues and skeletal structure.
- Sperm whales have strong six-pack muscle while develops and aids the dorsal ventral movements they make while swimming
- They dive deep; they've been found in deep sea trenches; they are considered the ultimate free-divers.
- Often riddled with imprints from the beaks of giant squid, one of their favorite prey items.
- Giant squid beaks can often be found in the stomach, intestines, and rectum of the sperm whale.
- Give birth to live young (viviparous), they nurture and milk.
- This specific beached whale had empty stomachs and was dehydration, which led experts to believe led (or aided) towards its' death.
- Ribs are jointed into a v-shape, with hinges. These ribs can expand and compress back and forth. This allows it to change the volume of its lungs, which helps enable its survival in deep dive conditions.
- When a whale dies, communities of detritus feeders and other organisms that eat dead organisms surround the whale and feed off of it.
- Flippers have grooves that allow them to pull in body effectively to make the whale more streamlined as it dives.
- Sperm whales possess the largest brains in the world.
- They use different dialects of clicks depending on population. This leads experts to believe sperm whales have a humanlike tendency to form different cultures.
- Sperm whale can't breathe through mouth. A breathing pipe leading from its lungs to its blowhole are what enable it to draw breath whenever it breaches the water. Long muscles and tendons attached to the skull expand and contract, opening and closing the blowhole like a valve.
- Top of its head contains a large complex of organs containing spermaceti (about 3 – 4 tons), which look much like semen (hence why it has the name "sperm whale"). The oil can become more or less dense depending on temperature of head (changes this by taking in water), which helps whenever the whale needs to stay in deeper waters or when it needs to float more; controlling buoyancy. It also aids in their echolocation abilities. These spermaceti oils can burn without giving smoke, which is one of the reasons why they've been hunted long ago.
- Their echolocation sounds can be heard up to 40 miles away and is about 120 decibels. Their echolocation aids in navigation and locating prey.

Why is rectum censored? It's not even that vulgar of a term, it's a perfectly technical, scientific term.
