I was born October of '96, fairly young so I only started gen 3. For me; Hoen=Ruby red, Sinnoh=Pearl, I skipped unova cause it looked dookie but kalos got my faith back. For kalos I want Y but the ds bundle that I'm getting only comes with x so whatever, that charizard X is the truth anyway. Which versions of each gen do you guys prefer?

Hey KidGrisly, we've actually got a section that deals with topics like this that are exclusively about the Pokemon games, so I'll move this over there for you. As for myself, the ones that I started with first are:

    Gen I (Kanto): Yellow
    Gen II (Johto): Gold
    Gen III (Hoenn/Kanto): Sapphire, FireRed
    Gen IV (Sinnoh/Johto): Platinum, HeartGold
Gen V (Unova): White, White 2
    Gen VI (Kalos): Y

    MOVED.

    I: Red
    II: Gold
    III: Sapphire, LeafGreen
    IV: Diamond, HeartGold
    V: White, White 2
    VI: X

The first 3 and 5th generation games were compensated with via emulator, for I was either a) too young, b) too unknowing of Pokemon's existence or c) in possession of a broken DS.

    Gen I: Red
    Gen II: Crystal
    Gen III: Emerald, FireRed
    Gen IV: Diamond, later Platinum
Gen V: Black, Black 2, although I didn't play the two often
Gen VI: Well sadly, I don't have a Gen VI game, but I want X.

I really liked FireRed and Diamond over their other versions, simply because they had better Pokemon to choose from. I didn't really care for Dialga, but Murkrow and later Honchkrow was an amazing Pokemon. A lot of Diamond's version exclusives are amazing. Scizor and Tyranitar? Yes please. FireRed with Arcanine as a primary Fire type if you didn't pick Charmander? Amazing replacement. A lot of a person's preference is also based on the main mascot Legendary Pokemon, too. I didn't really like Dialga, but by the box it looked a lot cooler than Palkia, at least imo.

Hopefully that answered that last question there. :p

I started with the third generation, so I was unable to play the first two generations on a physical Game Boy. Blue, Silver and Black 2 were emulated, with Silver being on a mobile device.

    Generation I: Blue
    Generation II: Silver
Generation III: Emerald, Leafgreen (although I eventually got Ruby)
    Generation IV: Diamond, SoulSilver
    Generation V: White, Black 2

Gen 1: I bought Yellow first, new along with a Pikachu,Togepi and Jigglypuff Gameboy, recently finished it on an SP
Gen 2: I picked Crystal and also finished it in 2012, I figured Silver and Gold were the same so didn't play them
Gen 3: Sapphire, Fire Red (Haven't finished either, wasn't as interested in Pokemon at this point or the games to be honest)
Gen 4: Never played, I didn't like the DS so stopped playing Pokemon alltogether.
Gen 5: Black 2 (Bought this last year, decided to get a 3DS)
Gen 6: Y, first Pokemon game I bought the day it was released in 10 years.

    Gen 1= Red

    Gen 2= Gold

    Gen 3= Fire Red, Emerald

    Gen 4= Heart Gold, Platinum

    Gen 5= White, White 2

    Gen 6= Y

I usually tend to favor those games associated with red, my favorite color. For the 3rd and 4th Generations though, I was only able to afford those games late when the third versions came out. For 5th Gen, White was the only version available at the time I went to buy it and I wanted the versions to match, that why I got White 2.

Gen II - I had all three, but the order I played them in was Silver, Gold then Crystal
Gen III - Sapphire first, then Ruby. Also got FireRed a little later, and recently I started playing Emerald on VBA
Gen IV - Diamond and SoulSilver
    Gen V - Black
    Gen VI - X

    Gen I (Kanto): Blue.
    Gen II (Johto): Silver.
    Gen III (Hoenn/Kanto): Ruby, FireRed.
    Gen IV (Sinnoh/Johto): Diamond, SoulSilver.
Gen V (Unova): White, White 2.
    Gen VI (Kalos): Y.

I've played almost every game from each generation, but these were my first. I've yet to get a hold of Pokémon X, though, but hopefully, I'll get it done pretty soon. :]

    Gen I: Yellow
    Gen III: Ruby
    Gen IV: Platinum

Those are the only games I've properly owned (well, Platinum was my brother's but), though I played games up to Gen V. For Gen II the first I tried was Gold, for Gen V it was... Hm, I'm not sure I remember. White, probably. Because I liked the thought of White Forest more than Black City and thought N and Reshiram looked better together than N and Zekrom :3
