Update!
Got my first gym badge from Rustboro. Not that hard.
Went to Dewford Town and got my second gym badge from Brawly. This one.... this one was tough for me. Must've died like 5-6 times, but at least all my pokemon leveled.
On my way to Mauville City now.

All I did was used a cheat to catch them all around lv. 2 and 3, got the pokedex, told my mom about it, and I think that's it.

- I finally hatch the 5 eggs (Chansey is very long to hatch)

Okay, going to be dumb and ask a dumb question. :S

Is there some sort of time limit for getting the first Pokemon on our team, like, a city or gym leader we have to get it before? I'd like to avoid trading to the game if possible, and seeing as Pikachu is one of my team members (which I can obtain in Viridian Forest ;D), could I just run around with a starter until I catch the Pika?
