~Random Pokemon Challenge~

Okay, going to be dumb and ask a dumb question. :S

Is there some sort of time limit for getting the first Pokemon on our team, like, a city or gym leader we have to get it before? I'd like to avoid trading to the game if possible, and seeing as Pikachu is one of my team members (which I can obtain in Viridian Forest ;D), could I just run around with a starter until I catch the Pika?

I think yes, you can run your starter until you catch Pikachu.
Anyway, this is before you get your first badge, so there is no problem.

Update: (platinum)

Picked Piplup from Professor Rowan, delivered the parcel and obtained the poketch. Defeated Roark in Oreburgh Gym with level 18 Prinplup. Travelled to Floaroma and defeated Mars and Galactic at the Windworks. Helped Cheryl in Eterna Forest, caught a Hoothoot in the forest Defeated Gardenia in Eterna Gym.

Noctowl: Lv23

Beat the Elite Four, after a long period of annoyance. Gee, the HGSS Elite Four was so much easier. My Pokemon aren't offensive enough! D:

I still managed to beat Wallace's high 50's with my level 45 team which is now:

Update # 1

No one answered my question so I used a Gameshark to get an Oddish, a Baltoy, a Koffing and a Pinsir early. I won my first badge easily with my Oddish today. Right now, my best Pokémon are Pinsir and Baltoy. I am obliged to evolve Wingull so I can use Surf, Waterfall and Dive. By the way, training Koffing was a pain. It has low stats so It gets defeated easily. I hope that changes when it evolves to Weezing.

Update # 1 (Again)

I re-started my challenge so I could get all my Pokémon normally. I'll use Wingull until it evolves because Wingull can't learn Surf, Waterfall and Dive. By the way, today I got my first badge. I didn't know Nosepass could defeat easily my Wingull so I kept trying until I could defeated it.

okay i just started my challenge ^^
after getting pokedex, bought 10 pokeballs
got into pewter city, gone to gym with my bulbasaur, fought lots of times 1st trainer to get xp fast by killing 1st pokemon and only spam growl against second so that my pokemon died and could fight again x)
i killed brock now hooray :D and catched a geodude
got my badge from misty easily with bulbasaur
went to some random pokedex and checked out bellsprout wasn't in red waht am i supposed to do now? can i gameshark to get it??
