Swear censors are a whole different ball game, and while I don't want to get into it too much, I'll run through a few things quickly. Objectively, I can't see much wrong with a filter toggle so long as we remove the censor bypass rule (for some words, I'll get into that below), and keep the filter on by default.

I think the main reason we've had a swearing filter since the dawn of days was purely to promote a positive atmosphere. That, and there's a lot of derogatory words which have no place on PC, you know the ones. Thing is, it's hard to have a toggle for some words, and not others. People dropping the occasional F-bomb or using an urban-thesaurus for the word "poo," doesn't concern me much. However, the case is that there are a lot of words that are seen as offensive without being directed. Words that are insulting to minorities, races of people, and so on.

If we can have a toggle for a list of pretty much harmless words, and always keep derogatory ones censored, then I'd be okay with that. Naturally staff would infract/warn members for using derogatory terms so we could go ahead and make all words uncensored, but the case is, I'd rather not see racial slurs being visible at all. So if we can split the filter, for words that are able to be toggled on or off, and keep certain words always censored, then that'd be sweet. However, it's a tricky affair.

Though this discussion on swear filters is pretty off-topic, and perhaps warrants its own thread. Bottom line is, I'm happy with seeing a toggle for the censor, so long as certain derogatory terms and racial slurs always remain censored.

  • This thread is so funny. Why people keep forgetting it's a Pokemon forum primarily? The target of the franchise won't really be interested and can actually be scared by this kind of content here. Not mentioning their parents not being happy with where they children spend time on the Internet.
We're not here to cater to the needs of parents, and the "target of the franchise" is largely irrelevant when put up to the average PC user. If we were officially affilated with the Pokemon Company International and had obligations to such things you'd have a point, but we're just a rather popular fansite with our own independent governing body.

Mature tag? Are you kidding me? As soon as you edit your age, you're eligible to view those threads. What are you going to do to verify they're actually younger? Ask for birth certificate? ID/Driving Licence photo? Those information are sensitive and people won't want to share them, obviously.
Verification has been stated as a non-issue beforehand (if you read Gavin's post).

I've seen so many stupid ideas here, but this one beats them all combined.
Would you care to elaborate why it's "stupid"?

This also make me question Andy as the right person to moderate General Chat. This thread should be deleted right of the bat, not because "another mod told me it's not OK". Pokecommunity is for Pokemon, sex sites are for sex.
    Good luck

I'm beginning to not even be able to tell of you're being serious or not. Do you really think any sort of activity would even be allowed to start?!

The [Mature] tag with all the moderation and toggles is a great idea, just to be back on topic.

  • I am not going to lie, I have not read the entire topic (the first and final page), because it just seems to be people repeating each other or ♥♥♥♥♥ing about who should be a mod. From what I've seen, I love the idea of a [MATURE] topic setting that you have to be a certain age to access. I do like discussing things that are child friendly, don't get me wrong, but sometimes I have a question that is really mature, or want a bit of adult discussion. That's just me, but I have been on forums before where we've all had a good laugh over an adult discussion. Furthermore, some debates are for more adult people. A [MATURE] tag will go a very long way, I can tell. As somebody (I think it was Mario) said before, if children want to change their age to view this content then that's cool, because it is their choice. They will not stumble across something by accident that will scar them for life. And if they are scarred by content from a [MATURE] tagged thread after they themselves changed their settings? Well, then they'll learn not to change settings for things they cannot handle, won't they?

Now, obviously with great [MATURE] tags comes great responsibility. There needs to be rules, or else anything could be posted (I'm talking links to pornography, gifs of men running around flapping their penises about and pictures of cats- you get the point). Staying loosely on topic maybe essential for this rule, otherwise you could end up on any discussion.

Ultimately, I think there needs to be a trial for the [MATURE] tags. As much as I love chaos and anarchy and all things adult (other than tentacle pornography; that stuff's too much), I do understand that this is a forum that has a respectable reputation to maintain, unlike some other dodgy backstreet forums. If the [MATURE] tag is being abused, then it maybe best to abolish it and keep the forum at the child friendly state at which it's at now.

On the topic of mature things, can be please have an option to rid us of the censors. They drive me insane (swearing is apart of my language, in which I use it to emphasis some things of just make them humorous).
