Smash Run: 10/10
"Fun, exciting, variation, creative, challenging, fresh. There is some luck thrown in the mix, but that's what makes it all of the above! You never know what the challenge at the end will be. Do you need to race horizontally or climb vertically? defeat more enemies quicker? or flat out beat the other opponents?"
Classic: 8/10
"Choice of difficulty, nice map layout, nice reward/risk mechanics, new final boss mechanics, overall nice take on classic mode (though underwhelming in fun), would like to see different final bosses to choose from for variety...not a fan of the morphing matter cliche."
Roster: 9.5/10
"Giant! Though there are some clones with their own slot ( Dark Pit) and I can think of more deserving spot recipients, (K. Rool, Dixie, Mewtwo, Issac, Delphox/Chesnaught. ect), I think if Dark Pit wasn't included there would be a spot available for another fighter. Plus, the roster has SO much to offer it's hard to dwell on the "what-if". I haven't even been able to use every character yet, and if I have, I hardly have had time to try them on for size. My only thought is...how did Nintendo have the ability to create so many character models with unique and varying move-sets and skins for a portable game???
Stages: 8.5/10
"Beautiful! Seemless transformations, not a fan of the 8-bit style clash of several stages, though it kind of works for the Earthbound level....it's beautiful beyond words! Not including 8-bit style stages it would have been a perfect 10 for the color, transformations/hazards, and overall atmosphere."
Skins/Alts: 10/10
"Kooplings, Fierce Diety Link, Dalmation Duck Hunt Dog, Jigglypuff w/ hair-bow, patriotic Mario, gender alts, my only complaint is that they all didn't have that one or two really special alt."
Customization: 10/10
"Glimpses of customization in the past, but this one is on a completely different level. Mii fighter move and apparel customization, character move customization, equipment customization. There are also customization in the smash run. "
Music: 10/10
As per usual, Nintendo comes through with music. I like the sounds section, which lets you listen to all the music AND the characters (can't believe each character has around 35-55 different sounds they make! Great melody remixes, that is what really makes the music stand out for me.
Interface: 9/10
Very Brawl-esque, but much better with the color blocking and outlining against the white backdrop. Everything is quite clean, fonts especially are prone to messiness on handhelds, but it does a great job of placing information across the screen in an appealing way...the only issue is that the classic mode and other central components to Smash are stored under the "Games and More" section...? That makes no sense.
The game records and trophies seem more organized and presented better than predecessors.
Hardware Compatibility: 7/10
The game never lagged (offline) the only issue I had was keeping track of where my character was. I'd like more options for people who want an even thicker outline, or add a colored aura to their own character. Also the team battle have faint auras which sometimes blend in with the scenery making it difficult to identify teammates.
Overall though, it's impressive that smash run works so well despite being a HUGE map. It's telling that Sakurai has experience with working with ambitious gameplay on the 3ds if you'd ever tried out Kid Icarus Uprising. All-in-all it's a success with the small screen, but there are some things that could be improved like the faint auras, ect.
Fighting Mechanics: 10/10
Melee glitches remain a thing of the past. Moves and gestures are so lively and interesting, but not overly distracting. The fights are quicker than brawl and there is a great balance for casual and competitive player alike.
Extras: Smash run is the only enjoyable trophy minigame of the series. Target Blast is cool in concept, like Angry Birds, but there is a high learning curve (I miss target smash). The credit roll is pretty fun as well. All star mode plays with the classic nintendo nostalgia, ordering combatants by the year introduced.
Overall I would give this game between 9 and 9.5...which I don't do often (Pokemon X/Y. MK7, SMT4, Link Between Worlds, Kid Icarus, Bravely Default, and Fire Emblem are the only other 3ds games in this tier). It's near perfection for a smash game for a portable device. And notice, it's the only fighting game on the list I provide above.
