  • @Iggy: Excellent post, loving the look of Cressida so far. For the RP Sample I'm intrigued to see where this feud between Zangoose and Galvantula goes. I've said more than once in this thread that I'm not accepting anybody until June 24th but it'll take something pretty major to overtake you.

  • Is it alright to be competing with someone else for the same position? I do hope so.

    Name:
    Richard Adam-Percival Foile

    Age:
    25

    Role:
    Low-Ranking Rebel

    Gender:
    Male

    Appearance:
Richard stands at a respectable 6ft tall, although his usually rigid posture gives the impression of a somewhat greater height. His shoulders are perhaps slightly broader than the average for his height, giving his torso a vaguely triangular look, but the thickness of his thighs and muscles around his lower abdomen put down any notion that his body is particularly remarkable. Richard's thick shoulders give way to arms that reach to just below his waist, with well-developed, bulky biceps being a testament to a reasonable degree of physical strength - although they could never be mistaken for the arms of someone who took their fitness or strength especially seriously. Beyond good muscle mass around his shoulders and hips, he is generally quite slim, even though he does possess some fat around his abdomen, and lacks any sort of definition anywhere on his upper body, giving him a look that can be described as svelte. His lower body, by contrast, is very well developed, with powerful, muscular quadriceps and thick calves.

Richard's face can be described, to some degree, as austere, contributed to by pronounced cheekbones combined with shallow cheeks, as well as a somewhat wide but not notably defined jawline. His chin is moderately long, but not pointed. Dark circles around his eyes are a hallmark of Richard's family, and he inherited a very potent version of this particular genetic heirloom. Coupled with dark, steely grey eyes, thick eyebrows, and an alabaster skintone, the impression of his gaze varies depending on his mood; if he is disinterested or bemused by something, he simply looks tired. However, when his interest or emotions are piqued, he has an intense, piercing stare that can be intimidating to those he speaks to. A large nose, with wide nostrils but a thin bridge, stands out on a face that is otherwise angular, and goes a long way to preventing his appearance from coming close to hawkish. Richard's thin lips are several shades darker than his otherwise-pale skin, and come approximately half a centimetre out from his nostrils; one could draw a line perpendicular to the ground and it would bisect the centre of his irises and the ends of his mouth. His teeth are a healthy-offwhite, and beyond a minutely crooked tooth at the front-left of his mouth, are generally unremarkable. His smile is mischievous and almost jovial, which complements with his intense dark eyes to create a face that usually seems intent. Richard's hair is a dark brown, easily mistaken for black at a distance, and kept at a length of about two inches, whilst being groomed into a smart combover when possible. He also maintains a Van Dyke, with a moustache that runs just over the length of his lips, and that doesn't join either below the nose or to his goatee, which itself is slightly pointed. His voice is slightly high-pitched, but soft to the degree where it is almost melodic.

Richard tends to wear clothes that are best described as smart, when he isn't in his resistance gear. Simple dark trousers with a smart Oxford shirt, coupled with suspenders, form the majority of his attire. If not this, then jeans and a shirt over a t-shirt. His shoes are tough but functional, often more boots than shoes. In cold weather, he wears a tan military-style coat that goes down to the knees, as well as a black scarf. He carries his possessions and equipment in a simple, dark brown backpack, with his bedroll tied on top. In warmer weather, he ditches the smart look and goes for a pair of tan shorts and a black t-shirt or polo shirt. Naturally, what he wears varies based on the situation, but this is a good general guide to what he will wear on a day to day basis.

    Personality:
Richard A. P. Foile. That's Richard to his friends, and Foile to you, my good man. Foile is a man who would like to be able to define himself with three words; determined, philosophical, and independent. For Richard is indeed determined, and throws his entire being into causes that he believes are just, imposing his own identity and beliefs onto any challenge he takes on. He is also philosophical, thinking and caring deeply about some of the most troubling problems in the world, for he fervently believes that it is only through thought and consideration that any plan of action will ultimately be successful. And his independence is unquestionable, to the degree where it is something he jealously, almost fanatically guards, rejecting any friendship or relationship that would stand in the way of him being exactly who he is. But he is aware that he cannot be so easily distilled into so few adjectives, and is aware that he is in no position to describe himself for his own benefit - or that of anyone else, to be honest.

Richard can therefore be described as a man who embodies differing aspects of conflicting extremes. Though he is extremely confident in his own abilities, to the point of arrogance or perhaps narcissism, he believes that he is nothing special and that anyone could reach his standards if they would only apply themselves. It is this offhand attitude that contributes to his arrogance and introvert nature; he simply fails to understand pressures that prevent people from being better than what they are, only understanding physical impediments to personal progress. He believes that the only way people can be bettered is through their own actions and choices, but nonetheless compassionate to those without any other option - although he certainly comes across as self-righteous and holier-than-thou to those he perceives as weak through choice, or simply lazy, but his deep concern for people and desire for a more equal world is undeniable. Richard can therefore be seen as hypocritical or inconsistent, but he would disagree with this perception; he simply sees all circumstances as applicable to a particular moral code, and this code is applied differently in every circumstance. He always believes the same beliefs, but the way they are to be applied differs and varies greatly depending on the situation. Whether or not his personal assessment of his psyche is accurate is, of course, a matter for debate.

Richard's interactions with other people are, as previously alluded to, somewhat dysfunctional, although he's generally polite to strangers. He delights in wordplay, wit and sarcasm, and very rarely takes matters seriously unless he believes there is a significant moral decision to be made, and tends towards being emotionally intense. He can go from joking and laughing about grave injustices to furiously denouncing them in seconds, whilst every victory is both something to be humbly accepted or hallowed as a triumph against a great moral enemy. This can result in him seeming flippant or simply eccentric, depending on one's perspective, but his high moral standards of other people combined with this abstract method of communication often dissuades people from forming close friendships with him. Those who can see past his acerbic style of speech see someone who is deeply passionate, strong-willed, and idealistic; someone who cares deeply, about them and about everything else, too. This, in itself, is typical of Richard's dichotomic personality. He thrives on being alone and needs periods of time to himself, regardless of his situation, and sees himself as a lone wolf with some justification. Yet he is occasionally, persistently tortured by the idea that his inabilty to emotionally connect to or understand other people means he is broken, incapable of being loved or loving because of his own dysfunctions, and this genuinely terrifies him. He is thus fiercely loyal to people he considers friends, genuinely caring about their welfare as much as he values their relevance as arguments against his perceived degeneracy. Even so, he is willing to cut off anyone who he perceives as a threat to his independence or individualism, or anyone who would change him just because he seems odd or unusual to them, and is disdainful of people who place too much emphasis on their relationship with others. This is a matter about which he is, shall we say, touchy. Aggressively so, and it has cost him friends in the past. He somewhat ironically regards betrayal or abandonment as the greatest crimes one person can commit to another, although he would argue that he has never betrayed or abandoned anyone; they have done so first, and he walked away from them to protect himself from further betrayal. Again, this is a matter of interpretation, and arguably an evidence of his sanctimonious, arrogant nature - or perhaps his insecure, deeply caring side.

Therefore, despite his confidence in what he can do and what he believes, he remains unsure whether or not he himself is a good person; whether he reaches the heady heights he believes himself and all other people are capable of. He suffers from bouts of depression over this proto-cognitive dissonance, and this can further detriment his relationships with other people, as he either sees himself as a detriment to them or a part of what's preventing him from being who he should be. As to who he should be... He doesn't really know. He's still searching for that answer, as, he would say, are we all. But he's utterly dedicated to getting there, and making the world a better place along the way - no matter how much it hurts, no matter who he has to leave behind, no matter what. It is this that enables him to dedicate so wholeheartedly to moral causes, to sacrifice his personal desires in favour of self-improvement and improving the state of the world.

Thus, we have Richard. Intense and acerbic, but witty and sarcastic. Principled and idealistic, yet grounded and egalitarian. Hopeful, but depressed. Confident, almost arrogant, but also unsure whether he deserves to be. Individualistic and introverted, yet caring and passionate. In short; he's a dysfunctional oddball, but he means well. He thinks.

    History:
Born in Anistar to wealthy but argumentative and neglectful parents and abusive, angry brothers, Richard developed his independent streak from an early age. Long periods of time alone meant that he was always going to lean towards introversion, for no other reason that wanting the company of others wasn't something he was accustomed to. His early childhood can therefore be described as cold, but not ontologically painful. He was five when Yveltal destroyed Lumiose city at the command of Team Amethyst, and the destruction of a place that Richard loved reading about deeply affected him. His parents, however, immediately sided with the tyranny of Amara, perceiving an opportunity to maintain their wealth and social stature, though they would never achieve success in becoming particularly close to Team Amethyst. Richard disapproved. He grew up being a family disgrace due to his refusal to do what was told of him, hidden away from the world whilst growing up being told that he was wrong and that his views didn't matter. Richard's response was to entrench his views on individualism and personal freedom, and a vicious cycle of anger, sorrow, and neglect emerged between him and his parents. His primary escapes from his circumstances were studying and fencing. Studying history and Pokemon filled much of his time, although he wouldn't acquire his first Pokemon until well into his teens, and provided a useful distraction from his family circumstances. His estranged relationship with his parents dominated his life until he was 18.

An exhausted and rain-soaked professor showed up at Richard's house one evening, claiming to be a teacher at a Pokemon University in Cinnabar. He had been hoping to studying an abandoned forest near old Lumiose City, attempting to discover if Yveltal's power had had any influence on the prevalence of Ghost Pokemon in the region. He was now visiting a contact in Anistar, and had heard that Richards' parents had the political leverage possible to get him a permit to venture into the forest and study the Pokemon there; the rangers in the region were known for excessive bureaucracy regarding the protection of Pokemon. He was willing to pay a fair price for the service, and so they began pulling the necessary strings to get the professor his permits. Richard grew close to the professor over his stay in Anistar, discussing various aspects of Pokemon history and biology, ultimately resulting in the professor asking to take Richard with him on his research trip. Pleased to have their disgraced son out of the house, Richard's parents agreed, and the Professor set off with Richard and his permit in tow.

During their visit to the hotel, Richard and the professor encountered a wounded Pawniard that had been abandoned by its pack. Unwilling to let a Pokemon die, alone and abandoned, Richard adopted the Pawniard, naming it Wellington. It would prove a useful guide through the forest and the hotel, and though the professor would ultimately come away empty-handed, Richard came away with a new academic contact and a Pawniard who would become a lifelong friend and comrade. On arriving back in Anistar, the professor offered to take Richard back to Cinnabar with him, as he was a promising scholar and worthy student. Though there may have been some vesitigial love between Richard and his parents, it went unspoken and unacknowledged. Wellington at his side and some of his favourite books packed, Richard set off with the professor to Cinnabar Island, not to return to Kalos for some time.

On arriving at the Island, Richard dived into research and study with a new passion, as well as training Wellington to be the best fighter he could be. His outspoken views on individualism and liberty, would not long be tolerated by the Team Amethyst sympathisers on the island. After a few years on the island, his professor alerted him to the fact that he was in danger of being silenced by Team Amethyst. He realised that it was time for him to depart Cinnabar Island, and find some way to fight for the beliefs he so strongly held. As a parting gift, his professor gave him a Kabuto - the result of succesful fossil regeneration programs - and directed him to a colleague in Cianwood Island, who was rumoured to be involved in some sort of resistance movement against Team Amethyst. Richard left Cinnabar Island when he was 23, arriving in Cianwood months later, avoiding any Team Amethyst strongholds and generally lying low. Along the way, he and his team were assaulted by a Murkrow, who injured itself in an attempt to claw at Wellington's sharp blades. Richard took pity on the wounded Murkrow and took it to a Pokemon Center, and it followed him thereafter, first out of curiosity, then affection.

He eventually arrived in Cianwood city, along with his once-renegade Pawniard-turned-Bisharp, a living fossil, and a miscreant Murkrow. He made contact with members of the A.A.V., who welcomed him into their ranks just before his 24th Birthday. Though he has spent little time in training with the A.A.V., his previous experience with fencing means he quickly developed adroit skills with bladed weapons and his studious nature allowed him to get a handle on the theory behind incendiary weapons. He could have had more time to prepare, but he was ready to face whatever he had to to resist the tyranny and autocracy of Team Amethyst.

    Pokémon:
Wellington the Bisharp - Metal Claw, Slash, Night Slash, Swords Dance, Guillotine, Fury Cutter, Iron Defence, Brick Break, Low Sweep
Richard's closest ally and friend, Wellington is a fierce and aggressive Pokemon in battle and in training. His loyalty to Richard is absolute, as he feels that his life is owed to his trainer, and he would willingly die to protect him. As such, morality doesn't necessarily exist to Wellington; he follows his trainer wherever he goes out of blind devotion, protecting him and helping him to carry out his vision in any way possibe. His master is his morality. Despite this, Wellington does have a sense of honour, despite his devotion to his trainer and saviour, and he is pleased that his owner is following a path against tyranny. Nonetheless, his primary concern is the defence of his master, and he savagely and fiercely pursues this goal.

Sentinel the Kabuto - Absorb, Aqua Jet, Ancient Power, Mud Shot, Surf, Waterfall, Dive, Scratch
Sentinel is a mystery, even to Richard. It might be his nature as a recently revived fossil, but neither Richard nor any of his Pokemon have really understood Sentinel since the moment he was revived from a fossil. But beneath an immutable shell, there is a great deal of consternation raging in Sentinel's primordial mind. He knows he was not designed for this world and has no place in it. And yet, he has a trainer who has given him a place in this alien land. He does not know how to react to this, but he does feel generally positive towards Richard and his other Pokemon, though he lacks the fanatical devotion of Wellington. He believes that staying with Richard is key to finding his place in this strange new world, and although his mind is not yet well-formed enough to understand the threat posed by Team Amethyst, he has a bad feeling about them in general. Sentinel will not simply stand by and watch as the modern world leaves him behind; he will catch up, and he will overtake. And he will remember how he got here.

Nocturnal the Murkrow - Wing Attack, Sucker Punch, Fly, Night Shade, Aerial Ace, Feint Attack, Shadow Ball
Nocturnal is the least serious member of Richard's party. More willing and able than the others to laugh at her trainer's existential crises, she is nonetheless fascinated by her de facto trainer's attitude towards life. Perhaps because of this, Nocturnal is less close to both of Richard's other Pokemon, although there is no true ill will amongst any of them. Nocturnal is largely cheerful - for a Murkrow - but capable of great feats of agility and ferocity in battle. Nocturnal is following Richard primarly because he is the best way for her to have her own adventures, but she does feel affection towards him nonetheless, and intends to remain alongside him throughout his crusade against Team Amethyst in order to learn more about, and become closer to, this strange man. Or she might just leave when he stops being funny. Either way.

RP Sample: (An example of previous RP work, if you don't have any then please write an epilogue about your character)

'Bloody, bloody bird,' Richard muttered under his breath as he reached higher up the cliffface. Nocturnal had flown up to the top of the ridge, and was crowing triumphantly as her trainer, and partner Pokemon, climbed up the hard way. His hands were beginning to ache every time they grabbed a new handhold in the cliffface, and he had cut himself in various parts of his body during his ascent. But it was an important task; if he could get to the top of this ridge, he'd have an excellent viewpoint over the target area. Taking a deep breath in and biting back some harsh words reserved for Nocturnal, he pushed on up the face of the cliff. Wellington was by his side, coping with the exertion much more easily, but remaining by his trainer's side all the same. He had no idea where Sentinel was, but he assumed the fossil was close by. He always was, somehow.
He finally reached the top of the cliff, and sighed with relief as he collapsed at the top. He took a moment to survey his surroundings. The cliff was quite high, and surmouted by a rocky outcrop with an cave-like entrance. It was otherwise barren and dusty. He unbuttoned his coat and rested for a short while, letting his body recover from the trial of the climb, before setting out what he had come up here to do; to flank the enemy. His team was counting on him. He hit a button on his headset, which responded with a rough crackling. 'Team Alpha, this is Unit-F, in position A and preparing to advance to the target.' The reply buzzed through from his commander, 'Understood. Proceed with caution, avoid any hostiles, proceed towards position B. Do not engage until you see the signal.'
'Understood. Out.' Richard advanced cautiously over the hundred metres or so towards the cave, flanked closely by Wellington and Nocturnal. On entering the cave, he lit a small torch and felt his way through a narrow passageway. His hands groped over moistened rock unti, finally, the cave opened up into a large, indoor clearing, with Richard emerging onto a small ridge overlooking the target; a small gathering of enemy troops, keeping watch over a steel brieface under a pink flag. He signalled to Wellington and Nocturnal to get down, and radioed his position to the remainder of his team. 'Team Alpha, this is Unit-F, and I have reached Position B. Four hostiles, two on patrol and two resting. Armed with guns, no Pokemon in sight; my Murkrow hasn't picked up anything unusual either. Target is in sight.'
'Got it. We ran into some resistance on the way, Units B, D, and E were taken down, so it's down to us three. Hold your position, we'll be there soon.'
'Aw. Tell B and E that I miss them already.'
'Have some decorum. This isn't a joke. Out.'
Richard's eyes narrowed as he assessed the situation. Having lost half of their unit wasn't ideal, but this rebellion wouldn't be won without risks and sacrifices. Besides, they would easily be able to overpower the minimal guard of their objective, and then get back to base camp. His musings were cut short by one of the hostiles turning to him and shouting out suddenly, pointing his gun at the previously hidden operative. Richard swore; how had they seen him? He was wearing full camo gear, it was pitch black, his torch was out, and his Pokemon were stealthier than he was! This was no time for panic, however; he had to act quickly. 'Wellington, Low Sweep on the closest target! Nocturnal, use a Night Shade on that one over there!' He rolled out from his position and began opening fire with a pistol he'd had strapped to his boot, aiming for the two enemies who had been resting by the briefcase. He hit one square in the chest, but the other took cover behind a rock formation and began returning fire. It was only after Richard had rolled that he realised how he had been spotted; Sentinel, with his glowing red eyes, had been attached to his back, and had drawn the attention of one of the soldiers.
'You git, you couldn't be bothered to climb and now you've blown our cover!' He yelled. He reached around to his back and pulled Sentinel off his back, suddenly hit with an inspired but also terrible idea. 'Sorry, Sentinel. It's for the good of the mission.' Before the Kabuto could react, Richard pulled his right arm back and launched Sentinel, grenade-style, at the soldier who'd been shooting at him. The soldier made no noise as Sentinel collided into his head, but the Kabuto was hissing furiously, glaring with a look of unrestrained hatred at his trainer.
Meanwhile, Wellington had incapacitated his target. It was a simple matter; deflect his panicky shots during a charge, and then tackle him to the ground. No human would dare to try and throw off an aggressive Bisharp whilst its blades were inches away from their face. And the screaming coming from the other soldier indicated that Nocturnal's Night Shade was as unpleasant as expected. Richard moved from his defensive position towards the briefcase, before making a curt hand motion towards Nocturnal; an indication to stop torturing her victim. It was at this moment that the remaining units of Team Alpha rushed into the room, weapons drawn and Pokemon ready, only to find Richard with the briefcase in hand. 'What happened? I told you to remain in position until we arrived!' The leader of the group was a gruff, tall man by the name of Thierry, with a patchy beard and scruffy hair. Richard quite liked him, despite his lack of personal grooming.
'Apologies, sir, they spotted me and I was compromised. But you still helped! I don't know how I would have coped with the two other grunts you guys took out on your way here.'
'Watch it. Remember what happened last time you tried to be clever? You got shot. And it was really, really funny for everyone else.'
'That wasn't my fault. It was yours for not checking in the closet. The most surprising things come out of closets, you know.' Richard was, technically, correct; the time to which the squad leader was referring was a complete mishap of organisation, and he'd done everything he'd been told to do. And he still got shot. Still, they'd achieved their objective there, just as they had here. 'Anyway, we've got the briefcase, and the rally point is just outside. There aren't any more hostiles in the area, so we should get this over with as quickly as possible, no?'
Thierry grunted. 'Right. I'll take point, let's move.' The group walked quickly through the cave, making their way out to the opposite side of the cave that Richard had come through. Though there was no climb involved, there was a sharp descent through cavernous, pitch-black tunnels, but Richard would take that over the ascent he'd gone through this morning any day. They finally reached daylight, and there was a small gathering of troops and medical staff at he rally point. One of the medical staff pulled Thierry to one side and began talking in hushed tones, whilst Richard sat on the ground with his Pokemon around him. He idly scratched Nocturnal's wing as he looked over Sentinel's shell, making sure there were no cracks. 'See, you're all fine. You'll get over it.' Sentinel responded with a sharp hiss, before settling down in Richard's lap and promptly falling asleep. Wellington was sprawled next to his trainer, gazing thoughtfully into the sky. All in all, it had been a reasonably succesful training exercise, and one that had proven his usefulness to the A.A.V., he was sure. He felt a sudden tap on his shoulder, and turned to face the man he had assaulted with Sentinel. 'I've never seen anyone use a Pokemon quite like that before,' he growled, nursing a large bruise over his right eye, 'but save it for the enemy. Paintballs are bad enough without being hit by one of those things,' nodding at Sentinel whilst he spoke. Richard smiled apologetically and was left to his own devices. All in all, it had been a fairly succesful training mission. He breathed in, sighed, and went back to petting Nocturnal whilst soldiers and medics flitted around him, all bemused by the day's events.

  • @Asariond: WOW! What a brilliant first post on the forum! Usually I'd be hesitant to accept someone who hasn't been active on the forums but the amount of detail shows that your dedicated to this RP, also it's quite a good feeling that you posted first on this thread haha. That SU has me thinking of all sorts of plots to put your character in. Tempted atm to include 2 Low Ranking Soldiers atm, both of you are deserving of a spot!

  • @ULN: Yeah sure, if it's an exceptional SU I'll accept as it's already started. Looking forward to reading it.

I'll reply to the IC thread posts tomorrow, a little too sleepy atm. But guys just so you know, I'd rather you have several posts per chapter otherwise my ideas will run out a lot faster than they would otherwise but it's up to you.

  • @ULN: I enjoyed reading your SU, you've been accepted! I especially loved the Pokémon theme reference aha. A very different take on what I'd expected for the role but that's only a good thing! Should add an objective for you when Chapter Two is released, which should be sometime this weekend. Just want to see what happens in peoples opening chapter so I can tweak what the requirements for Chapter Two are.

Thank you for accepting me! Just letting you know that around July 1 I'm going to be staying at my girlfriends for a few days to celebrate our one year anniversary. I won't be able to post until I get home, but I'll be sure to have a speedy catch-up!

    Also, is mega evolution allowed?

  • @ULN: That's fine thanks for letting me know! Also congrats on being with your partner for a year, that's good to hear. In regards to your question of Mega Evolution, I would say no for most cases but since you'll have Mega Absol. and Magic Bounce as an ability, I'll allow it as it would make a lot of sense for you to carry out field missions with protection as good as that. However, I will ask that you don't spam/overuse it.

@Challenger: I'm glad to hear it! Looking forward to your post.

BTW GUYS IF YOU HAVE POKÉBALLS AND THERE IS A CERTAIN 'MON YOU WANNA CAPTURE LET ME KNOW!!!

  • I've posted again, and I think that may close out Chapter 1 for me.

To be honest, I think it's weaker than my last post. Character interaction isn't my strong suit...

  • Alright, I think I've just about wrapped up Chapter 1 for my character. I'll leave the decision of whether or not Growlithe joins Richard's team up to TurkishDelight, as I get that it might be too soon to pick up a new Pokemon already, but I can work with whatever you decide. Also, loving everyone else's characters so far, they all seem fantastic!
