    The Elite Four

In Pokémon Sun and Moon, we're able to take on the Pokémon League which is made up of four strong trainers and a Champion. Focusing on the Elite Four, first off we have two Kahunas that we're already familiar with. Hala and Olivia were previously known as the Kahunas specializing in Fighting-types and Rock-types respectively. Next we have Acerola, a Ghost-type specialist who served as the Trial Captain at the Thrifty Megamart on Ula'Ula Island. Finally, we have Kahili, a Flying-type specialist and pro golfer who was once the Island Challenge Champion.

So what do you make of the Alola Elite Four? Did you find any of the battles tough? Who is your favourite member and why?

    Discuss away!

In my opinion, the Alolan elite four weren't anything super special. I went through the whole game like "so what am I going to do at the end? Will there be an elite four? Or with the gym system being replaced will the road to becoming champion be different as well?" I was kind of relieved finding the existence of the elite four tbh.

I don't know if i'm fond of the idea of reusing a couple of the Kahunas for members of the E4, it just took some of the surprise out of it for me. Though it wasn't completely easy becoming champion it wasn't horribly difficult either. I didn't anticipate the Professor being the final battle though, so that was pretty cool.

Acerola is by far my favorite though.

On the one hand I didn't like the reused Kahunas (or Trial Captain) mainly because they ended up reusing the Types, and it would have been cool to have more characters to meet. But on the other hand, the only Elite Four member whose design I liked (Kahili) wasn't even in the game at all up until that point. Had the entire Elite Four been new characters, I'm sure that would have been their fate. So it's a mixed bag for me, the fact that some characters are reused.

I'm very glad they went back to having 5 Pokémon on their team, though. My team was very underleveled, yes, but it was still a challenging set of battles for me, which I really appreciated considering how easy a number of previous major battles were.

They're not my favorite Elite Four overall, but I'm glad they're starting to go back to having 5 Pokémon on their team. And Kahili has a cool design, even if she's nonexistent outside of her role as Elite Four member.

  • It was okay, I had high expectations for Oranguru to be one of the Elite 4 or Champion wise. Dreams were crushed that day. LOL!

    Acerola and the Professor were real shockers to me! I'm amazed how strong Acerola is! She really through me off with that possed seaweed anchor Pokémon! It practically decimated my team! I knew it was ghost but I didn't know if it was Steel or Grass Type Pokémon and I forgot to revive my Salazzle before I battle her! I will never underestimate little girls again. . _ .;

The same with the Professor! He is just so competitive! Like he was not even backing down I loved every minute of that battle! OMG! You don't even know.. He just wouldn't stop! 10/10 better then Diantha! And he's not even a champion!!! Would give the throne to him in a heartbeat.

I wish they would have just don't 4 kahunas/trial captains or 4 randos rather than. 3-1 split. Having Kahili be the only one without extensive backstory makes her feel like a throwaway, but at the same time I think she could have worked in an all new cast elite 4.

  • I personally didn't like how this Elite Four was made up of 2 Kahunas and one Trial Captain, with Kahili (the Flying-type user) being the only totally new character. But I do love how both she and Olivia became the first Elite Four members of any generation to use Flying and Rock-types. Seeing Kukui be the Champion reminds me so much of those people who wanted Professor Sycamore to be Champion in X/Y.

Acerola and Olivia definitely put pressure on me the hardest, since the former had a Sableye that packed strong physical moves and her Dhelmise was no slouch either. Olivia's team was full of Pokemon with the Sturdy ability meaning I often had to take a hard hit from her before I could even take her out.

I didn't have much issues with Kukui, except for his Magnezone hitting my team very hard.

I thought they were fine - I fought them right after the storyline, not getting levels at all. With a fair amount of healing supplies, I didn't have a hard time defeating them, even with my terrible team composition.

(Had three fire types, a flying, ghost, and a water type.)

  • I had some trouble with them, but nothing I couldn't deal with. I think their difficulty was adequate. Harder than the X&Y Elite Four.

I also like how, if you battle the members in left-to-right order, the person in front of you perfectly represents the moment when the game stopped caring about the Island challenge and made it all about Team Skull, Aether foundation etc. I don't know whether this was intentional, but in this regard, the identities of the Elite Four are very much fitting:
    • Mele-Mele and Akala: during your travels here, the game was all about the Island challenge. The members who represent the islands here are the Kahunas Hala and Olivia.
    • Ula'Ula: here, the game started putting more focus on the other story, and the Island challenge started to become more of an afterthought. The member representing the island is not a Kahuna but a Captain instead.
    • Poni: and here, the writers seem to have completely given up on the Island challenge, the trials simply happen to be on your way. The member representing the island here is neither a Kahuna nor a Captain, but a completely new person.

The only member I had problems with on my first run was Olivia cause I had no counters to Rock at the moment besides Golisopod (which I prayed for Quick Claw to proc every time) or Decidueye (got oneshotted and outsped everytime I cri). The rest were fairly doable and Hala being the easiest of all thanks to Talonflame sweeping his entire team with Acrobatics.

  • Alola Elite 4, easiest Elite 4 I have fought.

People complain about Kalos Elite 4 and Champion being to easy, but I think Alolah takes the cake. All I had were Incenaroar, Persian, Ninetails, Solgaleo, Toucannon, and Midday Form Lycanroc all at level 53, and I was able to beat the Elite 4 and Champion on one turn, even in X I had to level up my Pokemon to beat that Elite 4 and Champion.

Also before you say anything, it was Lycanroc who did the most fighting, not Solgaleo.

  • Midday Lycanroc is a very good Pokemon for this Elite Four. I used one in my first run too.

    My team was:

Tsareena, Alolan Muk, Incineroar, Ninetales, Midday Lycanroc and Primarina.

As a general rule I don't use Legendaries in-game as it removes some of the challenge. By and large Legendary Pokemon tend to be much stronger than normal Pokemon.

Whilst the Alolan Elite Four wasn't the easiest Elite Four it wasn't overly difficult either. I did like that the Elite Four featured some new types this time round.

The easiest Elite Four for me was the Sinnoh Elite Four which I walked with a Grass Team. Even Champion Cynthia gave me no issues.

The toughest Elite Four for me was Johto and Lance again with a Grass Team. Lance may be the toughest battle I have ever had in-game in the Pokemon series.

Sinnoh was to easy for you, you are talking about Elite 4 that is said to be the hardest.

Also, I feel that Solgaleo is not much stronger than a regular pokemon, in fact he fainted the most out of all my pokemon when I was fighting the Elite 4.

  • Unless you had the exp share on, switch mode on, had high affection and grinded a bit the E4 isn't hard, but for me this was one of the hardest E4 yet, because they had good IV's and EV's.

Every pokemon game I played I always use the same rules:
    -No specific ev training
    -Not overleveling(Exp share turned off)
    -Set mode
-Using the same amount of healing items as the AI
    -No revives
-No hold items unless AI has too.

I wanted to bring myself as close to the AI and i must say that in this game this was the hardest to do so. Now I know a lot of people have the exp share turned on and mostly of the time have the affection boost too and shift mode REALLY makes the game easier. Imagine the AI could switch after defeating a mon and see what pok?mon is comming up next. The only reason that pre gen 5 E4 was hard was because of sheer LVL diffrence. Each E4 was stronger than the next and the diffrence between the first E4 and champion was a whopping 10 lvl's and most people were at the same lvl as the first member or even below that.

In this game the AI actually makes playes. Using knock off and pursuit, using status. And if you did not have a balanced team you would get destroyed and I didn't because I only used the pok?mon I liked.

The league has returned with 5 Pokemons on Elite Fours. Acelora's Palossand was really tough because it had a good defense and it knows Earth Power, Iron Defense and Giga Drain. Kukuli's Oricorio was a bit tricky. Hala's Poliwrath was bulky and the others are pretty straight foward.

Then Kukuki's Braviary was a tough foe and Primarina had a really good Special Defense.

Due to the Tapu Koko line, I had to limit myself to 5 good Pokemons.

In my personal experience I found Sinnoh's Elite Four to be the easiest. That does not mean everyone will as everyone's playstyle is different.

I have not used my Solgaleo yet but I am told it is a very good Pokemon. Much as I wanted to put him on my in-game team for story reasons I thought it would make the E4 too easy.

I was disappointed at Alola Elite 4 since the player already beat 2 of them before he complete all his trial.
I hoped that Alola League will have former Island Trial Champions as Elite 4 member instate of Kahunas.
So far , We have only Kahili who happen to be another Island Trial Champion.
While Accola simply filling up for Nanu , I don't even know if she is really a true Elite 4 trainer.

However, It will be entertaining to see how the anime handles it since Ash to beat all Kahuna for Island Trial and two of them are Elite 4 member.
My guess , The Anime will ether scarp The Grand Trial Or The Entire Alola Elite 4.

Kahiliwas the only tough one for me because I only had rock type moves to counter flying type Pokemon, and of course, rock is only normal effectiveness against Skarmory, so it was a bit of a battle.

  • Olivia's Probopass was the tough one for me. Other than that, wasn't too much of a challenge. I loved how Kukui is the "champion" though. Well played.

it was okay I guess. I kinda wish there were new characters for everyone, but I understood the idea behind it.
