    Bug Monotype update

I loaded up my fire red save file to find that I was back at the beginning of the game, and it has really put me off of using bug types right now (I don't know why) and was wondering if I can just start a new monotype?

    HeartGold
I traveled to Olivine City and discovered the sick Ampharos at the top of the Lighthouse. Then I traveled to Cianwood City to get the SecretPotion and to defeat Chuck, earning my fifth gym badge. Afterwords, I flew back to Olivine, saved the day, and defeated Jasmine to earn my sixth badge! Then I flew to Ecruteak City and traveled east to Mahogany Town. I went north to Lake of Rage, defeated the Red Gyarados, then went back into town where I defeated Team Rocket with Lance's help. After dealing with those pesky Rockets I was able to enter the gym and defeat Pryce to earn my seventh badge. Next, I dealt with the lovely Team Rocket once again, this time in Goldenrod City. Having dealt with them for a final time, I flew to Mahogany Town and traveled through Ice Path to reach Blackthorn City. Since I'm playing HeartGold, and Skarmory is a SoulSilver exclusive, I traded in a freshly caught Skarmory from my copy of SoulSilver. After some training, I was able to narrowly defeat Clair. Once she gave me the badge, I traveled to Ecruteak City, defeated the Kimino Girls, and caught Ho-oh. Finally, I traveled to and through Victory Road, defeating my rival along the way, arriving at Indigo Plateau. After some training and move set adjustments, I took on the Elite Four. Will fell easily to Magneton and Scizor, Koga to Skarmory and Steelix, Bruno to Skarmory, Karen to Scizor and Steelix, and Lance to Magneton and Steelix. In the next update, I will be stopping by Kanto!

    The Monotype Challenge
Steelix / lv47 / Rock Throw, Earthquake, Ice Fang, Fire Fang
    The Monotype Challenge
    Scizor / lv44 / Pursuit, Wing Attack, Slash, X-Scissor
    The Monotype Challenge
Magneton / lv45 / Magnet Bomb, Discharge, Thunder Wave, SonicBoom
    The Monotype Challenge
Skarmory / lv45 / Steel Wing, Slash, Night Slash, Fly

    Pearl
I immediately took on Team Galactic in their Eterna City Building, then went south onto the cycling road. I went underneath the road and caught my third team member, Bronzor. I spent a little while training both Bronzor and Shieldon to level 25, then continued on my journey, eventually arriving in Hearthome City. There, I met Fantina (who wouldn't let me battle her) then defeated my rival. Continuing along, I traveled through Solaceon Town to arrive at the location of the third gym, Veilstone City. There, I went straight to the gym and earned my third badge by defeating Maylene! Afterwords, I traveled south and west to get to Pastoria City. Once again, I went straight to the gym, where I defeated Wake to earn my fourth gym badge. Then I defeated my rival, chased around a pesky Team Galactic grunt, and ran in to Cynthia. I flew to Solaceon Town and cured the Psyducks on Route 210, then traveled north to Celestic Town and toured the ruins. Finally, I flew back to Hearthome City and defeated Fantina to earn my fifth badge.

    The Monotype Challenge
Empoleon / lv38 / Aqua Jet, Metal Claw, Brine, Peck
    The Monotype Challenge
Bastiodon / lv38 / Taunt, AncientPower, Take Down, Iron Defense
    The Monotype Challenge
Bronzong / lv38 / Confusion, Gyro Ball, Extrasensory, Confuse Ray

    X
Picking up from where I left off, I traveled north to Geosenge Town, encountering the suspicious Team Flare along the way. Then I traveled through Reflection Cave to get to Shalour City. There, I visited the Tower of Mastery where I defeated my rival to receive the Mega Ring. Then I spent a little time training before entering the gym. Normally when my team is made up of Steel-type Pokemon I would be a little wary of a Fighting-type gym, but thanks to my team's dual types (Bug, Ghost, and Fairy) Korrina fell pretty easily. Back at the Tower of Mastery, I tried out Mega Evolution using Korrina's Lucario, which she ended up gifting to me! As Lucario is part Steel-type, how could I not add it to my team? With Lucario having joined my party, I traveled east to Coumarine City where I defeated my rival before defeating Ramos to earn my fourth gym badge.

    The Monotype Challenge
Wormadam / lv37 / Psybeam, Mirror Shot, Bug Bite, Hidden Power (Ghost)
    The Monotype Challenge
Doublade / lv37 / Aerial Ace, Shadow Sneak, Slash, Night Slash
    The Monotype Challenge
Mawile / lv37 / Fairy Wind, Astonish, Vice Grip, Crunch
    The Monotype Challenge
Lucario / lv37 / Power-Up Punch, Swords Dance, Metal Sound, Bone Rush

Also I have a question. Since I'll be getting the National PokeDex soon in HeartGold, will I be allowed to trade Magneton over to Diamond/Pearl and evolve it at Mt. Coronet? Seeing as how I've already defeated the Johto portion of the challenge and Magnezone is technically in my PokeDex now?

  • Ultimate Fire Monotype Challenge
    Game: Y
    Badges: 8
    Challenge completed!

Okay, I don't think I've updated since earning my second badge, and I think I'm gonna (try to) keep this short.
Beat the game yesterday. The Elite Four were mostly easy enough. Malva was tough, as I didn't really have much against other Fire-types, except for Magcargo. So, I soft reset a few times, because I wanted Magcargo to get a lucky boost from Ancient Power on the first turn. Eventually, I got two in a row, and then even her Torkoal's Earethquake only dented Magcargo. The Water guy (forgot his name) was - obviously - a pain, as well. Especially his Gyarados. Delphox' Grass Knot and Pyroar's Sunny Day definitely came in handy. And of course Houndoom's completely godly Special Attack.

The champion actually wasn't too difficult, either. Houndoom saved the day again - seriously, that dog is a maniac, can't wait to finally get my hands on her Mega Stone soon.

Anyway, I did it - once again, the Ultimate Monotype Challenge is completed! Here's my final team:

    The Monotype Challenge

Delphox, lv. 66 @ Miracle Seed
    Male // Timid // Blaze
    - Grass Knot
    - Psychic
    - Flamethrower
    - Shadow Ball

I'm not sure Delphox will ever be one of my favorite Pokémon, but he was definitely a fun Pokémon to use, and if nothing else, I'd never used a Fire/Psychic Pokémon before. Earned me a victory a couple times, too.

    The Monotype Challenge

Houndoom, lv. 67 @ Poison Barb
Female // Modest // Early Bird
    - Dark Pulse
    - Flamethrower
    - Nasty Plot
    - Sludge Bomb

Houndoom, Houndoom, Houndoom. Oh my God, Houndoom. This girl is a beast and a merciless killer, and just- ♥♥♥♥ me, I'm never not using Houndoom again.

    The Monotype Challenge

Talonflame, lv. 65 @ Sky Plate
Male // Adamant // Flame Body
    - Flare Blitz
    - Swords Dance
    - Roost
    - Brave Bird

Okay, what Houndoom was for the special attackers on this team, Talonflame was for the physical attackers. At least, after setting up with Swords Dance. Solid, reliable and hits way harder with these powerful moves than I expected. Especially if Sunny Day was up, nothing could stand up to its Flare Blitz.

    The Monotype Challenge

Magcargo, lv. 62 @ Hard Stone
Female // Modest // Magma Armor
    - Ancient Power
    - Flamethrower
    - Recover
    - Earth Power

Magcargo was difficult to make proper use of, but it saved my ass during the battle with Malva. Plus, I really wanted it to be good, I mean, it's a goddamn magma snail, what's not to like?

    The Monotype Challenge

    Pyroar, lv. 66 @ King's Rock
    Female // Modest // Unnerve
    - Hyper Voice
    - Sunny Day
    - Flamethrower
    - Dark Pulse

Pyroar sometimes felt a little.. unnecesarry. I mean, Flamethrower and Dark Pulse, Houndoom could pull off, and she could pull them off better. Pyroar's main purpose was often to set up Sunny Day, I think. Which, to be fair, really came in handy. Hyper Voice was good, too, for neutral coverage, and just as a good STAB move.

    The Monotype Challenge

Flareon, lv. 64 @ Amulet Coin
Male // Careful // Flash Fire
    - Flare Blitz
    - Return
    - Will-O-Wisp
    - Protect

The generation finally came! #FlareBlitzForFlareon2013! Flareon was awesome, but also a bit difficult to find a solid use for, so I tried going a bit defensive, but Flareon's lack of recovery made that a bit difficult to entirely pull off. Flareon has good Special Defense, so I gave it Will-O-Wisp to help it withstand physical attacks, too. Protect is there in an attempt to pull off a sort of pseudo-toxic-stall strategy, I guess. Probably wouldn't work competetively, but Flareon pulled off some amazing wins through this during this playthrough.
