Looking forward to going back to this. : ) I did have a question regarding egg moves. Are we allowed to catch Pokemon to breed egg moves? Since options are slim early on in Sapphire for Dark Types, I was wondering if I'd be able to catch a wild slakoth that already knows yawn, and use it to breed a baby Poochyena with Yawn for the fight against Wattson. That fight is super hard without good super effective moves, and pretty much all I'll have is Rock Smash. If I could use a Mightyena that knew Yawn, it'd help out quite a lot.

Well, I learned the hard way that this was the only bug Pokemon on the first 3 routes. Tragic. Guess we'll have to make do with this stinkin' Ledyba.

CHAPTER 2: BETWEEN A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE

Here's my strategy: Confuse 'em with Ledyba and Poison 'em with Spinarak. Works like a charm.

Pokemon Sapphire Dark Monotype Update #1:

Quest for Stone Badge

Spoiler:

a) Picked Mupkid as my starter and named him Fishkid. Picked him so May would have Grovyle.
b) Defeated May and obtained some Pokeballs.
c) Caught my first Pokemon, a Poochyena named Snarlkid.

At this point in the run it felt like I was playing an old Dragon Warrior game where every battle is worth a trip to the Pokemon Center, and the quest to level up is dangerous and slow. Things became a bit easier once Snarlkid reached level 5 and learned Howl, allowing her to set up on a trainer's weak Pokemon and take out multiple Pokemon in one battle.

d) Helped Wally with his Ralts situation, and head towards Petalburg Woods.
e) Fought the kid with six wurmples for an easy level up, and fought the Aqua grunt once I reached level 11.
f) More fights happen, and Poochyena learns Bite. Now I can go fight all the geodude trainers in the area to reach level 15.

You know you're in a bad situation when you have to take the long way around to avoid Youngster Joey. I wouldn't stand a chance against his Machop, so I avoid Joey like he's some kind of street punk.

g) I go fight Roxanne with my level 15 Poochyena. I equip her with an Oran Berry, and use the X Defend and X Special I found earlier. Most of Roxanne's attacks missed anyways, so I was able to knock her out pretty easily.

Quest for Knuckle Badge

h) Fight more trainers and wild Pokemon until Snarlkid evolves into Mightyena.
g) I take the boat trip to Dewford and catch my second Pokemon, and Sableye named Spookykid
h) Sableye levels up really quickly at first, so I get her to about level 15 before going to the Gym.

In one of the biggest oversights in Pokemon history, there's pretty much nothing anybody can do to Sableye in the Gym right next to the cave you get it in, so Sableye Night Shades everything in the gym for buckets of EXP, including the Gym Leader himself. Fun fact, the only move Brawly has that can do anything to Sableye is Makuhita's Knock Off. Even sand attack does nothing due to Keen Eye.

Quest for Dynamo Badge

Spoiler:

i) A bunch of uneventful fights occur until I fight May. Sableye and Mightyena do an equal amount of work in taking her out.
j) I beat up poor Wally's Ralts with my Mightyena, proving a point to him that some people are just giant creeps.
k) The big fight of the game occurs with the fight against Wattson....

Wattson is pretty much the hardest Gym leader in the entire series if you don't have good super effective moves for him. Most people will probably have a combusken, Marshtomp, breloom, or hariyama for this guy, but in challenge runs where none of those are options, this guy is ridiculously tough. I was dreading this fight the most, and sure enough he kicked my butt a few times. Eventually I was able to beat him with Sableye night shading Magnemite and Voltorb, and having Mightyena get lucky against Magneton with critical hit Rock Smash and a few Soda Pops. Not the most graceful fight, but in my defense he had three Pokemon and I only had two.

Dynamo Badge (thankfully) Obtained!

Quest for Heat Badge

Spoiler:

L) Many uneventful trainer battles occur, and sableye learns a few nice moves. Mightyena has the option of learning Strength now, but I teach her Secret Power instead to prevent her from knowing two HM moves. It turns out to be the right call later on too. :)
m) Archie gets destroyed since at this point both of my Pokemon are around level 30, and there still isn't much the game can do about my Sableye.
n) I fight a bunch of gym leader trainers to level up Sableye for the fight with Flannery.

The fight against Flannery goes really well. Sableye knocks out both Slugma with Rock Tomb before they get a chance to set up Sunny Day, and Sableye lands a Night Shade on Torkal before being taken out. Mightyena uses Secret Power since a slugma set up light screen, and manages to paralyze Torkal. Once light screen wears off I use bite over and over while Torkal keeps getting fully paralyzed and healed with Hyper Potions. Eventually Torkal goes down, and I get my next badge.

-Received the Poketch.
-Progressed toward Oreburgh City, defeating Tom and all the trainers on route 203.
-Arrived in Oreburgh City
-Found Roark in the Oreburgh Mine.
-After he returned to the Gym, I went to the gym and easily defeated him!
-Turtwig evolved into Grotle during the battle
-Returned to Jubilife City
-Defeated Team Plasma Grunts with the help of Dawn!
-Progressed to the Ravaged Pass
-Arrived in Floaroma Town
-Defeated Team Plasma at the Valley Windworks. Commander Mars was no problem for Grotile
-Upon entering the Enterna I caught a Budew.
-With the help of Cheryl, I took down Team Plasma in the Enterna Forest.
-Arrived in Enterna City
-Defeated Gym leader Gardenia for my second Sinooh badge
-Took down Team Plasma in their hideout. Commander Jupiter was a pain!!!!
-Received a bike
-Progressed down Route 206, defeating every trainer in my path!

-Trained it to catch up the the rest of my team

Quest for the Balance Badge

Spoiler:

a) Obtained the Go- Goggles and caught a Cacnea in the Desert. I nicknamed it Needlekid
b) spent a really long time fighting wild Lunatone until Cacnea evolved into Cacturne.
c) Went to fight Norman, and was able to defeat him with just my new Cacturne.

Quest for the Feather Badge

d) Obtained Surf from Wally's parents.
e) got the good rod and caught a Pokemon I was excited to finally have a reason to use. I caught a Corphish and called him Bubblekid.

I now reach the point in the game where you can wander all over to collect a bunch of really useful items, and fight a bunch of trainers blocked off by surf. I obtain several rare candies which I use to quickly evolve Corphish, TM Ice Beam, and TM Sludge Bomb which I both use on Cawdaunt.

f) finally head towards the weather institute where I beat up the admin and obtain Castform.
g) Deafeat May once again
h) obtain the Devon Scope or whatever it's called from Steven, and go fight Winona.

Winona was surpisingly easy, with Sableye using Rock Tomb and Night shade until he got knocked out, and Crawdaunt finishing Skarmory with Surf, and knocking out Altaria in one shot with Ice Beam.

Feather Badge Obtained!

I captured an Absol named Losbakid, and I'm now on my way back to slateport to stop Team Aqua.

The last update before the end of the game!

Very quickly took out Liza and Tate with Absol and Cacturne.

Mind Badge Obtained!

My full team of five Pokemon beat up Team Aqua all over the place, and I ended up catching Kyogre in a Master Ball (cause why not)

Leveled up Crawdaunt a lot at the Sootopolis Gym and defeated Wallace with a little help from everyone. Cacturne managed to take out two Pokemon with Solarbeam before Wallace put an end to it with Milotic's Ice Beam. Absol and Crawdaunt did pretty much everything else.

Finally arrived at the elite four!

Absol managed to take out just about all of Sidney's Pokemon, with Crawdaunt doing the clean up.
Absol wipes out all of Pheobe's Pokemon by himself
Crawdaunt takes out Glalie and a sealeo, and Cacturne gets lucky with Blizzards missing and Solarbeams Sealeo #2 and Walrein. The remaining Glalie almost wipes out my entire party.

Drake beats up almost everyone with Shelgon, Absol takes it and Altaria out. Crawdaunt Ice Beams the two Flygon, and at long last I hit an unbreakable wall with the super speedy, high special attacking Salamence. Everyone gets wiped.

Considering I was already pretty lucky to get that far, I feel there's no reason to give it another shot. I am currently stuck at the elite Four, and will be doing a lot of level grinding to try and finish the game.

For the moment I have deposited Mightyena and Sableye since they were pretty much useless at the elite Four. I'll be focusing on My three strongest Pokemon for now.

I completed the Dark Monotype Run for Pokemon Sapphire!

It wasn't pretty as I pretty much had to drip feed Hyper Potions to Crawdaunt while fighting Metagross, but I don't feel bad about it since the Elite Four in Ruby/Sapphire is really brutal, and climaxes with a flippin' Metagross as the true final boss of the game.

All the more reason why I love Ruby/Sapphire. It's really flippin' hard.

Just a note to Necrum, I've long ago abandoned the Ruby Grass run and the FireRed Poison Run, so you can remove those from the list. I also completed the Dark Type run in Sapphire. Right now I'm only working on the Bug MonoType in Sapphire.

Speaking of which, here's an update on how that's going. I decided to take my time a lot more with this run, since I kind of rushed through the Dark Type Challenge.

Quest for the Stone Badge

Spoiler:

a) Picked Mudkip as a starter for HM purposes later on. Named him Mudkid
b) Caught a Wurmple I liked after many attempts. It evolved into Silcoon. :(
c) Caught another Wurmple after many attempts to find a good one. It also evolved into Silcoon. :(
d) Finally found an absolutely perfect Wurmple in every way for what I needed. Thankfully it evolved into Cascoon.
e) In order to make this run work, I decided to fully EV train my Dustox to be a wall. I very slowly fought 120 Lotad to boost its Special Defense.

f) During all of this, I encountered and captured a Shiny Poochyena! I named it Goldogkid for now.
g) I also capture something else I'll need, which is a female Surskit.
h) Once I'm done with Lotads, I use Surskit to fight the first Youngster, and avoid every trainer until I'm in Petalburg Woods. Here I boost my Defense and HP EVs by 252 and 136 respectively. Two wasted EVs later and Dustox is fully EV trained. (Everything up to this point took an entire day. Roughly six hours play time)

I) I avoid every trainer at this point and head straight for the Gym. Dustox's Psybeam knocks out all of the regular Gym trainer's Pokemon in one hit.

j) I challenge Roxanne to a Pokemon Battle!

I let Geodude shoot a Rock Tomb at me to see how much it hurts, and it does less than ten damage to Dustox. It is just as sturdy as I hoped! I use a psybeam to knock it down to the red, and he shoots another Rock Tomb. While Roxanne uses a Potion, I use Moonlight to heal up. Psybeam proceeds to knock out Geodude and Nosepass with little effort.

k) Dustox and I head towards Rusturf Tunnel to rescue Peeko, and we ignore all the trainers so I can head to Dewford Town.

L) Dustox makes very quick work of the fighting types in Dewford Gym.

m) I deliver the letter to Steven, and sail towards Slateport.
n) I pick up my Effort Ribbon for Dustox.
o) I deliver the parts to Stern, and fight off Team Aqua.

p) I leave and defeat Brenden with just my Dustox. Dustox is able to shake off his Numel's Embers without much effort, and is able to stop Wailmer's Rollout from getting out of hand with Protect. Grovyle uses Pursuit on me, and I take him out with multiple Poison Stings. I use Moonlight in the middle of it just to make the battle feel more hopeless for him. :)

q) I arrive in Mauville and immediately head towards the daycare.
r) I deposit my Male Dustox and my Female Surskit to have a widdle baby.
s) A Surskit hatches from the egg that knows Bubble, Psybeam, and Protect. (the last of which isn't listed on Bulbapedia as an egg move for Surskit, so bulbapedia users might want to add that)

t) I blend some berries with the old man in Verdenturf, and feed them to Dustox
u) I enter Dustox in the Normal Rank Beauty Contest, which he wins.
v) I take Dustox out and use him to get the Macho Brace from the Winstrate Family.
w) I sail back to Petalburg City to EV train my new Surskit.
x) While EV training Surskit, I encounter and capture a Shiny Lotad! I call him Leafhatkid for now.

Ultimate Fire Monotype - Pokemon Fire Red - Update 1

I have a feeling that these update posts are going to get a bit jumbled :) Currently I take my gameboy with me (I love the looks I get) on the go, and play my 3ds at home durring my down time. My X is still progressing, around the 6 gym now. Anyway, time for my first update on the kanto region playthrough! Oh, I switched out Leaf Green for Fire Red.

- Grinded in the grass to beat Gary next to Viridian
- Got Metal Claw and beat Brock after a couple tries
- Charmander evolved into Chameleon
- Chugged through Mt. Moon
- Fought Gary again, grinded to Bill's house, bought some Super Potions.
- Beat misty after 5 or so attempts
- Went to S.S. Anne, Got cut, and swept Lt. Surge
- Travelled to Rock tunnel, took a little under an hour to get through with no flash and no references.
- Charmeleon evolved into Charizard sometime while in there.
- Caught Growlithe in the Grass between Lavender and Celedon.
