Day 07: Favorite Rival
Silver.
Blue/Gary made a decent rival (even if he did forget the "Yo Homes" that's supposed to come before "Smell Ya Later"). But then Silver came along. He stole his first Pokemon. He shoves your character out of his way. It becomes clear that Silver is not your friend. Even as he learned some tough lessons along the way, he still maintains his stance that you are an opponent that he is to overcome. Nothing more.
Silver, however, proved to be the high point of rivals in Pokemon games. Starting in R/S/E, Game Freak began confusing the terms "rival" and "friend" and a string of highly disappointing, buddy-type "rivals" followed.
I'd really rather be presented with a rival who partners with the evil organization and rises through their ranks in their attempt to annihilate the protagonist. But as it stands now, Silver is the best rival the franchise has to offer. At least he's not your character's friend.
