[Theme for this part: Solaceon Town]
Games: Diamond, Pearl, Platinum (September 28th, 2006 / September 13th, 2008)
Generation 4 brings so many new things to the table that it's practically ludicrous. The jump to the DS not only planted the 3D roots for the main series (Colosseum aside, as I consider those spinoffs), but also included a ton of main-stays like the Choice Items, Life Orbs, and the infamous GTS.
However, the most important feature they introduced was the Physical/Special split. Essentially, this means that moves are physical or special on their own merit instead of the type they were attached to. This gave a ton of Pokemon a fresh new start as they can properly utilize their movesets without being held back by an archaic elemental system. (Weavile is the greatest example of this)
When it comes to the actual games, though? Sinnoh as a region had a very distinctive and classy jazz soundtrack that drives me nuts every time I hear it. It's that good. Some of the music in here might even completely beat out Hoenn's soundtrack! It helps that the places the songs were attached to were pretty cool, like the Galactic Headquarters, Jubilife City and so on.
Team Galactic may not be on the same level as some of the later villains, but they're still hardcore. These Zeerust spaceman-looking motherfuckers used an actual goddamn terrorist bomb to drain one of the lakes, and that's not even getting into the... things they were doing to the Lake Trio. Cyrus is also one of the most imposing villains in the series due to how cold and emotionless he was.
I'll admit, the only thing stopping me from going back and playing through the games again is one major issue - the pacing. I don't remember how the actual story progression goes, but when it comes to fights? It moves at a snail's pace. It really takes me out of it, and that's a shame because I would adore Gen 4 otherwise.
The theme for Sinnoh's mons are ~spaaaace~ and myths. Let's see, we have the masters of time, space and antimatter, the representations of both sides of the moon, GOD, and other mythical creatures like Spiritomb.
This is also the generation that's full of evolutions to old Pokemon - like it's practically a big fat love letter to them. You could chalk it up to "relationships" again.

Spoiler:
#387 - 389: Torterra Family
Type:
Ability: Overgrow / Shell Armor (Hidden)
Appearances:
Stats of final evolution: 525 (95, 109, 105, 75, 85, 56)
Additional forms?: N/A
Thoughts:
- Torterra is based of off the concept of the world turtle, a creature that appears in various mythologies as a creature that carry entire ecosystems on their backs. It's a really cool idea and I like that it's reflected on Torterra themselves with the little tree and their ground typing.
- That said, I've always seen them as the interesting but not very effective member of the Sinnoh starter trio. Like I always want to do something with them but it's just eh.
-
#390 - 392: Infernape Family
Type:
Ability: Blaze / Iron Fist (Hidden)
Appearances:
Stats of final evolution: 534 (76, 104, 71, 104, 71, 108)
Additional forms?: N/A
Thoughts:
- Chimchar and Monferno are alright, but it's Infernape that wins me over here. They're a flaming kung-fu monkey, for corn's sake.
- It helps that they've got a badass design to go along with it - the white fur and fire hair make them really cool-looking to me.
- I can't help but make parallels to Hanuman whenever I see Infernape, with Hanuman being a monkey god from Hindu mythology that gained immunity to fire and tried to eat the sun when he was young. Wrestlers also look up to him for his strength, so there's that.
- I've also heard about them having parallels to Sun Wukong, a mythical monkey king that's known to possess immense strength and is part of the influence for the golden bits on Infernape's body.
-
#393 - 395: Empoleon Family
Type:
Ability: Torrent / Defiant (Hidden)
Appearances:
Stats of final evolution: 530 (84, 86, 88, 111, 101, 60)
Additional forms?: N/A
Thoughts:
- It's my favorite Sinnoh starter! (It was also my first, so there's bias too)
- Piplup is a precious penguin. I might even like them more than their evolution, actually.
- ... But then they evolve into Empoleon and things get better from there. Like damn, Empoleon is so well-designed that it practically slays me. From the name to the kick-ass design, to their origins? Come on, how can I not love them?
- Empoleon is a mix between an emperor penguin, some metal and real life French ruler Napoleon Bonaparte, a man constantly mocked for being tiny even though by modern standards he would actually be a normal-sized man.
- The best part about Empoleon is that they're not even half-bad for fights - they're very effective at what they do (that is, spamming Scald and Stealth Rocks) and can stomach a lot of punishment due to being part Steel.
- Empoleon is one of my top picks for starter Pokemon thanks to their incredible design and decent viability.
-
#396 - 398: Staraptor Family
Type:
Ability: Intimidate / Reckless (Hidden)
Appearances:
Stats of final evolution: 485 (85, 120, 70, 50, 60, 100)
Additional forms?: N/A
Thoughts:
- Alright, Talonflame may be the overpowered one out of the early-game birds, but none of them can top my love for Staraptor. Starly's growth into Staraptor is great, because you have this cute little bird turning into a lethal predator with red highlights.
- I dunno, the punk hair Staraptor has is a big influence in my appeal for it.
- That said, damn they are strong. You don't want this one to give you the business, because they can really mess up anything that's not a straight up physical wall.
- Final Gambit is a rad Fighting-type move that causes the user to faint but uses all of the their health to damage the opponent - a Staraptor at level 50 with max health EVs has over 192 HP, which is ridiculously lethal to anything that's not a Ghost type.
- It also ignores resistances, so anything with HP below 192 would get knocked out immediately even if you lose your Staraptor.
- You don't want to mess with this bird.
-
#399 - 400: Bibarel Family
Type:
Ability: Simple (1st) / Unaware (2nd) / Moody (Hidden)
Appearances:
Stats of final evolution: 410 (79, 85, 60, 55, 60, 71)
Additional forms?: N/A
Thoughts:
- Bidoof is always made fun of. Poor little guy - I actually really like their design, even if they are just a dopey-looking beaver.
- Bibarel is notable for being the only Normal/Water type in the series, but that's about it. I don't really find them as endearing as their first form.
-
#401 - 402: Kricketune Family
Type:
Ability: Swarm / Technician (Hidden)
Appearances:
- Kricketot
- Kricketune (Level 10)
Additional forms?: N/A
Thoughts:
- A violin beetle is something I didn't even know existed before I went to read up on Kricketune. Kricketot is a cute little bug in a suit while Kricketune is a composer with a big honking Mario mustache
- They can actually use Sticky Web and have somewhat decent attack, but that's where the positives end, sadly. I still like them from a design standpoint!
- They also have one of the best cries in the entire series.
-
#403 - 405: Luxray Family
Type:
Ability: Rivalry (1st) / Intimidate (2nd) / Guts (Hidden)
Appearances:
Stats of final evolution: 523 (80, 120, 79, 95, 79, 70)
Additional forms?: N/A
Thoughts:
- I find Shinx to be one of the most adorable Pokemon like... ever. They're just fluffy enough and have a great color scheme to go along with their little lynx kitten look. They also bear a striking resemblance to Kimba the White Lion, an incredibly old manga series created by Osamu Tezuka in 1950.
- I find Luxio interesting to note as they're #404 and electric type to boot. Ah, internet memes.
- Luxray takes all the cute aspects of Shinx and makes them into a badass electric lynx. They're not only visually imposing thanks to their piercing yellow eyes (that can see through solid rock, by the way) but also physically thanks to an incredible 120 attack.
- ... I hate to admit it, though, but... they have quite a bit holding them back from being a top-tier fighter. They get crippled by burns and just aren't fast enough to keep up with their competition.
- This doesn't change their rad-as-hell everything else, though.
-
#406 - 407: Budew and Roserade
Additional thoughts:
- I like how Budew's hands twist into each other, given how it's supposed to be the part where the roses are budding. Clever.
- Roserade has a nice cape.
- Budew: *********
- Roserade: *********
#408 - 409: Rampardos Family
Type:
Ability: Mold Breaker / Sheer Force (Hidden)
Appearances:
Stats of final evolution: 495 (97, 165, 60, 65, 50, 58)
Additional forms?: N/A
Thoughts:
- Yowza, look at that attack stat! Combine that with the likes of Sheer Force and you could strike the fear of god into anyone. It definitely compliments Rampardos's intimidating appearance and status as one of the fossil predators.
- It turns out they're based off of the pachycephalosaurus (pachy-cepha-lo-saurus - if that isn't a tongue twister than I don't know what is), a family of dinosaurs known for their hard heads. Given how you re-vitalize Cranidos with the Skull Fossil, it's really neat.
- Burns are always a problem and they have less-than-appealing defenses, so keep that in mind if you ever decide to get one for yourself.
-
#410 - 411: Bastiodon Family
Type:
Ability: Sturdy / Soundproof (Hidden)
Appearances:
Stats of final evolution: 495 (60, 52, 168, 47, 138, 30)
Additional forms?: N/A
Thoughts:
- Talk about your living walls. Bastiodon has a neat name (a bastion is a protrustion in a wall that allowed people to safely shoot in multiple directions) and despite having quite the butter face, does exactly what it sets out to do - be a fortress.
- Unfortunately, despite their impressive defensive stats and access to a move called Metal Burst (a move that serves as Counter/Mirror Coat in one but the user must go last to shoot it off), they're horribly outclassed by other Pokemon like Probopass and, more recently, Mega Aggron.
- They just get crushed by all the Ground and Fighting types, you know?
-
#412 - 414: Wormadam and Mothim Family
Type (Burmy):
Type (Evolutions):
Ability (Mothim): Swarm / Tinted Lens (Hidden)
Ability (Wormadam): Anticipation / Overcoat (Hidden)
Appearances:
- Burmy - Plant Cloak (Outside or tall grass)
- Burmy - Sand Cloak (Cave, beach or on a honey tree)
- Burmy - Trash Cloak (Battled in a building)
- Wormadam - Plant Cloak (Level 20 female Plant Cloak)
- Wormadam - Sand Cloak (Level 20 female Sand Cloak)
- Wormadam - Trash Cloak (Level 20 female Trash Cloak)
- Mothim (Level 20 male Burmy regardless of cloaks)
Additional forms?: Six
- Cloak forms (Introduced in Diamond and Pearl): Swaps stats around and changes appearance depending on the area Burmy last fought in. This affects what kind of Wormadam they'll evolve into.
- Plant Wormadam: 424 (60, 59, 85, 79, 105, 36)
- Sand Wormadam: 424 (60, 79, 105, 59, 85, 36)
- Trash Wormadam: 424 (60, 69, 95, 69, 95, 36)
- That is a lot of thought and effort put into a Pokemon that is otherwise average. I find them intriguing despite the fact you don't really use them to fight. Burmy is a bagworm that honestly looks kind of like poop - literally. That's what I see every time I look at it.
- The fact they change form based on where you last fought is neat, but it gets even cooler when they evolve into Wormadam. Now the cloaks are permanent and actually apply different stats and typings... plus, I kind of like how Wormadam looks with her big colorful nose.
- The best-looking form is the Trash one because she looks like cotton candy. I thought trash was supposed to be unappealing?
- ... Then we have Mothim, the far less interesting counterpart as it has no fancy cloaks - it's just the adult form of the bagworm. Yeah, bagworms grow into moths. I... actually did not know that. Pokemon teaches me things, man.
-
#415 - 416: Vespiquen Family
Type:
Ability: Pressure / Unnerve (Hidden)
Appearances:
Stats of final evolution: 474 (74, 80, 102, 80, 102, 40)
Additional forms?: N/A
Thoughts:
- This one wins me over just on design alone - Vespiquen is an amazing concept and their appearance is both elegant and badass. The fact female Combee are rare and are the only ones to evolve emphasize how important the queen of the hive is.
- It shows with their unique Attack, Defend and Heal Order moves, seeing as she literally commands the hive to do whatever she wants.
- I like women in big poofy dresses, I like queens and I like bees - Vespiquen is one of the best mixes of this that I could have asked for.
- I am willing to accept that they'll get crushed by rocks and burned or frozen to death - they're still one of the coolest Pokemon out there.
-
#417: Pachirisu
Type:
Ability: Run Away (1st) / Pickup (2nd) / Volt Absorb (Hidden)
Appearances:
Stats of final evolution: 405 (60, 45, 70, 45, 90, 95)
Additional forms?: N/A
Thoughts:
- Pachirisu is the Pikaclone of this generation and to be fair, they're not half bad. They're visually distinct from Pikachu and managed to shock the world during VGC2014 when this one player managed to nuzzle their way to victory with it.
- It's an electric squirrel and while they're not the best one of the bunch, they're still average. I'll gladly take them just so I can use Pickup, though - a chance to get rare items without even having to pay or look too hard is just too fun.
-
#418 - 419: Floatzel Family
Type:
Ability: Swift Swim / Water Veil (Hidden)
Appearances:
Stats of final evolution: 495 (85, 110, 55, 85, 50, 115)
Additional forms?: N/A
Thoughts:
- Buizel and Floatzel are otters/water weasels - I like them quite a bit. They're charming and a lot stronger/faster than I expected. Aside from Azumarill, this is the Pokemon I always picture using Aqua Jet - they're fast enough to justify it and ramming headfirst into someone while draped in water sounds like Floatzel's gig.
- Aside from that, I'm actually failing to come up with anything else to say aside from "they're a neat Pokemon".
-
#420 - 421: Cherrim Family
Type:
Ability: Flower Gift
Appearances:
- Cherubi
- Cherrim - Overcast (Level 25)
- Cherrim - Sunshine (Activates during Sunny Day)
Additional forms?: One
- Flower Gift (Introduced in Diamond and Pearl): Raises Attack and Special Defense of itself and its partners when the sun is out.
- Cherubi is nice and all, but its evolutions steal the show for me.
- Both forms of Cherrim are adorable - the Overcast version has its eyes almost obscured by its hair-like leaves and makes me imagine them as some sort of shrinking violet.
- The Sunshine form, on the other hand, is so precious that it might even give Bellossom a run for their money. In fact, they'd be the best of friends because Flower Gift increases the Attack and Special Defense of Cherrim and their partner.
- Not that it means much considering all of the incredibly dangerous Fire types running around nowadays, but it's still an adorable mental image of Cherrim and Bellossom working together.
-
#422 - 423: Gastrodon Family
Type:
Ability: Sticky Hold (1st) / Storm Drain (2nd) / Sand Force (Hidden)
Appearances:
Stats of final evolution: 475 (111, 83, 68, 92, 82, 39)
Additional forms?: Two
- Regional (Introduced in Diamond and Pearl): Different appearance based on which side of Sinnoh they're encountered in.
- The two Gastrodons are based off of sea slugs... and they're adorable. They have one of the silliest cries I've heard and have regional differences based on where you encounter them. That's neat.
- They're also one of the most effective Water/Ground types this side of Swampert as they can tank against almost everything that's not a Grass move and can even absorb Water attacks! Scald is good too because getting a burn off on physical attackers may be what changes the game.
- The most interesting thing about Gastrodon, however, was that they were originally slated to appear in Ruby and Sapphire but were cut due to time constraints. There's even an unused sprite depicting a Gastrodon that looks nothing like we know them now. Perhaps they were the rare Hoenn variant?
-
#424: Ambipom
Already covered in Gen 2 along with Aipom.
Additional thoughts:
Individual rating: *******
-
#425 - 426: Drifblim Family
Type:
Ability: Aftermath (1st) / Unburden (2nd) / Flare Boost (Hidden)
Appearances:
Stats of final evolution: 498 (150, 80, 44, 90, 54, 80)
Additional forms?: N/A
Thoughts:
- Drifloon is so wonderfully twisted and cute at the same time. It's this little purple balloon... that snatches kids and sends them to HELL. To make matters worse, Sun and Moon revealed that if you pop one, its soul comes out with a screaming noise.
- You know, for the kiddies. *snrk*
- But in all seriousness, I love my big dumb balloon. Drifblim being the quintessential Stockpile+Baton Pass user is good, but man that strategy pisses me off.
- Drifblim is a step up in terms of looks since they're a blimp now. I like the little yellow hands it has and the cloud on its head (for some reason).
- They're a great Pokemon and I'm always happy to find one even if it means my character is going to get whisked away by an evil little balloon.
-
#427 - 428: Lopunny Family
Type:
Ability: Cute Charm (1st) / Klutz (2nd) / Limber (Hidden) / Scrappy (Mega)
Appearances:
- Buneary
- Lopunny (Level up with Happiness)
- Mega Lopunny (Lopunnite)
Additional forms?: One
- Mega (Introduced in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire): +100 (65, 136(+60), 94(+10), 54, 96, 135(+30))
- You sure landed in hot water with this one, didn't you, Game Freak?
- Buneary is fluffy and cute, but the real star of this show is Lopunny - a graceful rabbit creature with strong legs and big droopy ears... and as much of a victim to Rule 34 as Gardevoir despite also having a 50/50 gender ratio.
- I mean damn, I don't think I've even seen a male Lopunny anywhere aside from this one character that appeared in a creepypasta years ago.
- How do I feel about Lopunny, though? Gotta be honest with you, as much as I liked their adorable design, I hated how I couldn't really use them for a real fight.
- Then Gen 6 came to the rescue and introduced Mega Lopunny! They get a really cute redesign (... that is also leaning on super-feminine because ponytails? Black fur that looks like ripped pantyhose? That's just taking the piss, dude) and an enormous boost in strength thanks to ORAS.
- 136 Attack and 135 Speed are crazy enough on its own... then things get drop-kicked into overdrive when you realize that Mega Lopunny has Scrappy as an ability.
- Scrappy allows Normal and Fighting type moves to hit Ghost types (I don't know if I've explained this before, but to hell with it, we're saying it again) - effectively turning Mega Lopunny into a super-cute murder beast that can sweep entire teams if you give them the opportunity.
- Burns and anything that can survive a blow long enough to get a hit off are their worst enemy, though.
- Eye-rolling playboy bunny jokes aside, they're an incredible Pokemon that I'm glad to have part of my personal A-Team.

#429 - 430: Mismagius and Honchkrow
Additional thoughts:
- One's a "toil and trouble" ghost witch and the other is a warlock mob boss crow. I've already said my piece with these two, but I just had to re-iterate that. I love them both to death.
- Mismagius: *********
- Honchkrow: ********
#431 - 432: Purugly Family
Type:
Ability: Thick Fat (1st) / Own Tempo (2nd) / Defiant (Hidden)
Appearances:
Stats of final evolution: 452 (71, 82, 64, 64, 59, 112)
Additional forms?: N/A
Thoughts:
- Glameow is so sassy it's great. They're slim and come with a cute little coil tail... and to be frank, just the first form alone is more endearing than Delcatty.
- You would think I hate Purugly for making them all fat and... well, ugly right? You couldn't be more wrong, sonny jim - I adore Purugly for those very reasons. I find the big and poofy design to be more amusing than just a regular old cat.
- It doesn't even look that wretched either - in fact, it has even more character than its pre-evolution due to always looking snarky about something.
- They are also far speedier than you would expect and come with a nasty ability - Defiant. If any stat gets lowered, they get a free, instant Swords Dance to compensate and it helps that they come with Sucker Punch of all moves to take advantage of it.
- I don't know why or how I find them so intriguing, but I guess I'm weird that way.

#433: Chingling
Additional thoughts:
- It's a little jingle bell! Good thing Christmas was around the corner when I started writing this.
- In all seriousness, I love the item that Chingling is based off of - I find it to be one of the most adorable kind of bells out there.

#434 - 435: Skuntank Family
Type:
Ability: Stench (1st) / Aftermath (2nd) / Keen Eye (Hidden)
Appearances:
Stats of final evolution: 479 (103, 93, 67, 71, 61, 84)
Additional forms?: N/A
Thoughts:
- Scumbag skunk has to be one of the funniest ideas they came up with for this generation. Poison/Dark is a surprisingly effective type and the way these two look crack me up every time. Not that they look bad, per se, I think they look great... it's more the issue of a sprite Skuntank had.
- They could use Flamethrower... so me, being the 5 year old I am, cannot think of anything else but a bad case of the Eric Cartmans.
- (I am actually sorry this time.)
Holy hell, I might actually complete this before the year ends.
