Pros: Extensive Weapons Arsenal, Breathtaking Visuals, Expansive Multiplayer, and Heart stopping Action
Cons: Less than Perfect Vehicle Controls, Short Campaign
Marcus Fenix and Delta Squad continue the fight against the Locust Horde in Gears of War II. The storyline continues off from where Gears of War left off from. Gears of War II refines the original Gears of War formula with added multiplayer matchmaking, additional online maps, and tons of new weapons. If your a veteran from the original title, it won't take long to master.
The visuals are more stunning than ever with Epic taking it to a new level with Unreal Engine 3. Campaign features more open areas & imense underground caverns. The story continues where the original title left off. The Lightmass Bomb did not destroy the entire Locust Horde and it is now up to Delta Squad to infiltrate the Locust Stronghold and cut off it's head. One major change in campaign mode is now your AI counterpart can now revive you when you are downed . The new weapons you will discover in your arsenal are the Flamethrower, Ink Grenades, Mortar, and Mulcher. Other weapons have been tweaked such as grenades can now be set onto solid surfaces as proximity mines and smoke grenades knock your opponents down for a brief moment after the initial blast.
The Execution system has been expanded on with 11 weapon-unique executions. Downed Enemies can now be picked up with and used as a "meatshield" which will be a highly useful tactic in Multiplayer and Campaign Modes. Chainsaw Duels can also take place when two players attempt to chainsaw one another. Whoever presses B the fastest is the victor of the battle.
Cooperative Play has been expanded upon allowing each player to select their individual difficulty. The 10-hour Campaign may leave more to be desired by some players due to the short time however the extensive multiplayer features make up for what game play time you lack in Campaign. Bots can now be added to play which can add to the fun of offline play.
Epic has addressed prior concerns with Gears of War I regarding to online achievements. A large majority of the achievements available in Gears of War II can now be obtained offline which will eliminate most malicious play online.
New modes have been added to Multiplayer including Meatflag, which is a variant of CTF where the flag fights back. Wingman pits you and a comrade against other 2 man teams. Classic Modes such as Warzone and Execution are still present in the game. The matchmaking system expands upon the original online system creating more intensive and an equal playing field for both new and veteran players.
If you are new to the Gears World, we would suggest picking up Gears of War I to get a feel for the series and experience the immense story and background. If you are a veteran of the series, this is a must have title for the holiday season.
