Power cuts
A few hours ago, we suffered a power cut for what must have been the first time in nearly five years. Obviously, the internet as well as the television went out amongst other things. Had this been just a few years ago, my brother and I would have been crawling up the walls, but my parents would have been content to read a book via candlelight or just talk or something. Five years later, however, can do a lot to change the technological dynamics. I have an iPhone and my brother has a Blackberry; we both have laptops so we could still do work for a fair while until the power would come back. We were fine.
My parents on the other hand... well, the tables were certainly turned in that regard. It's just amazing what increases in technology can do to people and how much we rely on it, even if we don't think so at the time. Without TV or their desktop computer, they were completely flabbergasted about trying to entertain themselves and kept trying to pester us about the most trivial of things. Maybe it was good in that it gave them some genuine time to reflect on stuff, but it was still funny to see them absent-mindedly try to turn lights on whenever they entered different rooms, not realising about the power outage. A zombie-like force of habit emerged in all of us when it came to that!
The power returned about an hour later, only to vanish again - and be greeted by a cacophony of noise from the living room, where my parents had their sense of security smashed all over again - for about fifteen minutes. There's still the concern that it may go again... who knows? Might as well save the draft at this point...
