In the manga, Silver sneaks into the lab and makes his escape out of the second story. I think that the stairs could just be to make the plot more interesting in the beginning. I have no idea what will be on the second story, but i think it's just an addition to Elm's Lab. He already has a house, he doesn't need to sleep in his lab! xD

Although he never does come out, does he?

Though, it could simply be the place where tons of books are located, or the machine that had once allowed us to restore out Pokémon's health.

Maybe the first floor (or second floor if you're American :P) has been converted into the main floor of a Pokémon Center? That way, all the towns in the game would have one.

It always seemed odd to me that anyone in the "first towns" (Pallet, New Bark, Littleroot, and Twinleaf) who owned Pokémon would have to go all the way to the next town, through a lot of tall grass, to heal up.

Maybe its an egg room. Where he studies pokemon eggs.
Since that was what begins your journey it fits in.

I'm with the whole idea of Silver sneaking in that way. I mean, the labs always seem so crowded, so a second floor seems kind of organised.

Then again, it could also play a part in a subplot. Maybe the new girl/Gold will be up there for some reason?

You can heal your Pokemon in Elm's Lab, he has a healing machine for that. I think it's at the beginning of the game that he tells you that you can heal up in his lab.

What if it was a mini Mart? ;) You could buy items there...or! You could get Poke Seals for your Pokeballs up there? That would be awesome.

It's probably where Elm goes when his wife is in a bad mood. XD

I do have an idea, but I'm really surprised how no one else thought about it exactly in my way...

But before I speak about my thoughts on this, I want to say something else - no matter how much a person is lost in his research, they will come home, at least at night. By rarely, his wife must mean that he comes back late at night, and leaves early in the morning. But he must come home to sleep.

    Now, to my point:

The upper floor could be just a room full of books, or a new plot-device to support a deeper plot, or it could be... and egg research room with different eggs and computers, from the idea that someone else mentioned.

I think the idea of it being an additional scene for Silver stealing the Pokemon could be really fitting. It would explain where Elm was when Silver was stealing the Pokemon.

But my personal opinion is that it is Elm's house.
Elm's house is moved atop his lab, making it perfect for him.
In place of his older house, a newer house will be there which is now going to be the home of your supporting character, just like Dawn/Lucas in D/P/Pt.

ya know what? i don't even think the creators of the game know what it is yet- i think they are reading these posts and taking our ideas

XD, I wish what you said was true.
What if it really is? :D

I like your idea, it would make sense and would give us something new to see in Newbark Town.

It could be oaks private lab where he performs special research or something. Therefore, when the elite 4 is beaten, you could go to kanto, or a kanto legendary is in johto and you have to go capture it for oak. he then performs research and gives you the pokemon as a reward. just a thought.

    or...

Maybe its his private quarters. you never know.

Yes, I agree they have to return home sometime. Anyway, the samething you were thinking of, the upstairs being something to deal with the plot. I kind of agree with it as it is something I thought up as well. I mean it really could possibly have some relation with a plot that continues onto Kanto possibly and for all I care, I think if it is so, then it'll be needed. Even though, the way it sounds with Silver seems very probable and makes a lot os sense for them to do. Especially with the fact that it was done so in the manga.

If it is his house, then I think it'll work. Like you said, they can revert his old house to now the supporting character's home that maybe useful after game. Somewhat like how it was done with Dawn/Lucas' sibling informing us on swarms. This idea is very probable, but it kind of lays at the fence for me as they can easily choose someone else's home to be the supporting role's base. Unless, [really highly doubted by me] the female comes from the Kanto or another region and ends up helping us throughout the storyline of the game or another rival, keeping the upstairs something used for the future plot of the game and keeping Prof. Elm's home where it was originally located. I don't know, but that was just a thought that crossed my mind.

Elm's evil lair where he takes up his secret identity as the new Boss of Team Rocket, trying to kill Professor Oak to gain Kanto-Johto Superiority (LOL!!) :-P

I think this is going a little overboard. The game and neither the anime has thought of an evil killing plot. Plus, it would kind of mess up the story of the game and be strangely odd. I compliment you on the wishful thinking and open mind thoughts though.

Probably a small office of research, or even the place where the Oak and Elm will take tea xD

And also might be the place where we get the National Dex

Maybe Elm has a collection of Pokedolls hidden up there... and that's where your mom is going to get all the stuff she's been buying with your money. They don't sell the dolls in Goldenrod last time I checked.

    Spoiler:

Or maybe that's where that other scientist sleeps. (The one who gives you the potion and Pokeballs.)
