Yes, let me explain.
I didn't want to give any "traditional" Starters. Too many other games give you the KANTO starters or the ones from HOENN/SINNOH etc.
The idea was to give the Player "decent" choices. Pokémon that aren't terribly bad in battle and can at least hold their own in non-competitive battling.
I also wanted to select 1 Pokémon from each of the regions (KANTO thru KALOS). 3 Pokémon with 2 evolutions and 3 Pokémon with 1 evolution + 1 MEGA evolution.
So while they might seem "random", they were also partially/carefully planned at the same time !
The point is that the Player should be able to succeed with any Pokémon.
The Player should also just be glad they're not starting with a Pidgey or Rattata like the Youngster on Route 1 {XD}
