another update! I played up past Gardenia and Jupiter last night, and also managed to get myself an Armor Fossil which I revived into Fence the Shieldon, who is Relaxed nature. I've spent the past bit getting them to relatively even levels before taking on Fantina. here's the team so far...
so, uh, quick update! I've arrived in Oreburgh with my first 2 team members:
- Shinx (Daze), Female with a Naive nature
- Magikarp (Triton), Male with a Lonely nature
but uh. while I was in the mines looking for Roark... dude?? hello????
that's... an unexpected one. the game must really want...
I'll try this out, why not. gonna be on emulator since I don't wanna reset the file on my physical Platinum copy.
Name: Descendng
Game: Platinum
birthday is Sep 6 '02.
Team:
1. Simple enough, that leads me to a Shinx as, effectively, my starter.
2. that's a Gyarados. neat.
3. Sneasel. works...
I'd say it's between Gen 3 and Gen 7 for me.
Gen 3 has a bit of weird level scaling with not many great places to grind exp, lack of the physical/special split, and level up learnsets that are just criminal (e.g. Sandslash's only ground type move via levelup being Sand Tomb at LEVEL 52)

I like them both, but I've always favored Hitmonchan when it comes to these two. in terms of the Gen 3 movesets, Mach Punch offers great utility for Hitmonchan's middling speed, and Sky Uppercut doesn't have the same drawback that Hi Jump Kick does for Hitmonlee. the elemental punches not being...
during my first playthough of Violet I'd say Ceruledge, probably. moveset of Swords Dance, Bitter Blade, Shadow Sneak, and Brick Break (which I changed to Close Combat later on) for coverage really worked wonders. just an extremely good mon with a sick design.
I'd say my personal favorites are Gold/Ethan, Hilbert (despite his name), Rosa, and Dawn (specifically in Platinum). all of them really stick out to me for one reason or another.
it used to just be traded mons/anything that doesn't share your Trainer ID, but in Scarlet and Violet specifically, I believe anything caught above your level cap (whether it's under your Trainer ID or not) will be disobedient.
