first poke i caught was a purrlion. but after evolving and reaching lvl 31 and still being fairly useless she was quickly replaced.

ya but that doesn't mean they can't keep brock aswell as add 2 new characters. they just need brock to actually battle/use his pokemon. also what you said at the end is what they did in hoenn, it was may and max who joined.
