Yeah, that gap was pretty much why it didn't (and shouldn't have) worked out. But I do hope they can become an item in a theoretical future 10-15 years later should they return to Gravity Falls. Too bad the writers stopped making more episodes, so we'll never know. ... and wut?
I actually learned the Viginère code in high school! It's a really cool cipher, and (relatively) easy to do by hand. The only hard part of it is cracking the code, haha. (But providing the code word is short compared to the text, it's certainly not impossible. ;))
