I edited the battle screenshot with a GBC style background. I forced the message background to pure white because amusingly, the GBC near-white (according to FRLG's textbox palette) is the exact same color as the default message background.

They are the same codes as FireRed 1.0.

You should be able to Surf east from New Bark Town into Kanto and then Fly to Vermillion.

Liquid Crystal does not support linking. I tried it. :( But are you running on a flashcart? LC was designed to be run in an emulator.

Simple solution:

Fly to Indigo Plateau (or is it Pokémon League, can't remember ATM), talk to the guy with the Psyduck Abra and he'll take you to New Bark Town.
