Well when I first played D/P/Pt I chose Chimchar because I love fire types and thought it was just pretty cool....but if I restart the game or if its erased Ill choose someone else. Like if I didnt like Fire Types so much Id go with piplup because I love Penguins. xD

Shouldnt be that hard to remember but then again its diff. in Platinum, you need HM08 Rock Climb in order to get to where you Rival is with the Galactic Member. So in order to use Rock Climb you defeat the 7th Gym Leader....

Had trouble understanding a bit but if you have the Japanese version of Pokemon Platinum then you can still get the event item as long as you have Mystery Gift.
