The biggest thing that freaked me out about America was all the police/security carrying massive guns. It was so disconcerting stepping off the plane and seeing all these security guards carrying these huge rifles or w/e. I think at most all I'd seen at all beforehand was a small handgun.
I agree with Her. I know I pretty much just lurk nowadays, but it's also difficult to insert yourself into a conversation when the same two/three people are just gonna go around in circles debating their usual shit.
If he did in fact stage the whole thing (which seems pretty likely), he's an awful person. It's only gonna make people more skeptical of actual hate crimes.
But what form does that take? How do we challenge deeply rooted inequalities in society if all we're promoting is a vague, egalitarian message? And do you have any examples of major social change being brought about that way? Because I can list a ton that's happened because of "exclusive"...
People focus on the marginalized (women, gay people etc) in these discussions because that's where the inequality lies, and to make that go away these inequalities need to be confronted. Blanket campaigns for "true" equality only result in these issues being glossed over and ignored.
