Mainly towards the last few gyms or on Victory Road right before the Elite four. Normally I try to balance out my team more right before versing the Elite four so I have a better chance at beating all of them without having to try again.

I'd start at the beginning! Play Leafgreen or FireRed and learn the basics from that game, then proceed on to HeartGold/SoulSilver, those games are a little longer because there are 16 gyms. By that point you should have some experience and be good to go! Just play through the games, and learn...

Pansear was my favorite because I just like fire type Pokemon the best. All three seem evenly matched against each other, similar to the starters. I really liked how GameFreak added these three, I think that it would be cool to see something similar to this in X and Y.

It was hard for me to choose between the elekid and mareep evolutions because I have good memories with both Pokemon. Overall though I chose the elekid evolution because Electrike is a boss and he dominated in the 4th. Gen metagame.
