Train up Heracross to learn Brick Break and Butterfree can use Sleep Powder/Stun Spore ggnore. Edit: Or Sewaddle to lv15 to learn Razor Leaf.

Yeah I'm fairly sure they've said it was intended to make people do the link thing back in the day and 'bring them together' but it always seemed gimmicky to me. x3 Also if you can level up Heracross to learn Brick Break then you should do just fine in Brock's Gym. :D

Awesome! :D I always disliked the necessary trade concept as well. Sounds real interesting I think Pewter is really promising I'm liking Brock's set up! ^_^ Looking forward to this chapter.

B-but Scizor is a great Pokemon. x3 Not sure how we could even evolve a Scyther or other trade Pokemon like Kadabra and Machoke though.
