It was really really cool that the developers included the old region. It made a great game even better.
At the same time, I would've liked to see every area from Red, Blue and Yellow recreated and expanded. I believe they couldn't do this due to time restraints and performance issues such as...
Thanks a lot, I really appreciate this!
I agree with you in that the developers did a great job with what they had. If I understand it correctly, there was apparently a lot of stress around the release of these games. Yet they still managed to fit in almost a full extra region, which was...
You know what? Maybe I will. I've been wanting an extensive version of these games ever since I met the first guard in pokémon Gold's Kanto as a kid.
Thank you so much for the encouragement and pointing me in a direction. I might as well set aside some time to educate myself further on this.
A few years back, I did some concepts for extending areas in generation II's Kanto. As we all know, the original Kanto region in the second generation was not as expansive as in gen I, as the game developers had to cut out or heavily reduce many areas.
I've put up these concepts in a blog post...
I think I did it with this team:
TYRANITAR L100 @ Quick Claw
Rock Slide
Earthquake
Crunch
Thunderbolt
DRAGONITE L100 @ Focus Band
Wing Attack
Extremespeed
Thunder Wave
Thunderbolt
KINGDRA L100 @ Leftovers
Surf
Double Team
Rest
Ice Beam
I think if I really wanted a safe go I'd go for...
Zapdos for the movepool and type combination. One of the few to learn Drill Peck. Back then there were like two good Flying type moves in terms of direct offensive power. The other being Aeroblast, so both were very limited in terms of pokémon that could learn them.
Articuno has great design...
I thought I had them but now that I looked I couldn't find them. They looked really nice too, especially the Gen II ones with the powerhouses of Lugia and Ho-Oh on them and stuff. Where are they? This is unacceptable!
Clair and Lance were relatively difficult in my first run of Gold. I didn't consider weaknesses to the more uncommon types back then, so their dragons were pretty effective against my brute force style.
