You can actually soft patch with melonDS core in Retroarch, but because this probably sounds like gibberish to most people you can ignore it.. But for those interested:

i haven't used this software yet, so i can't attest the usefulness but you may consider the "Universal Game Translator", here:

Fire Red Squirrels works, but the nice thing about ups (and I think bps) type patches is they tell you the required source file, unlike ips. Note the "Required CRC32" line, I just keep each main copy of all the source roms on my computer so I always have the necessary version.
On the intro screen, the one that after the intro video plays says pokemon crystal, at the bottom it says the version. The current latest version is 3.1.1 (311 pretty rad band btw), but be forewarned that the 3.1.1 for some reason does say 3.1.0 for me (unless I didn't update but I am certain...
That's basically what I was saying. Not complicated also implies figuring it out yourself either by trial and error or, shockingly enough, reading the documentation most devs provide. Crazy stuff
Good to know, but I'm moving on. But I'll try to keep that in mind if I decide to revisit. I don't remember which settings I toggled, nor do I care at this point. Thanks though

Yup, go to the google drive link and download the folder or any of the .bps which are patch files meant to be used with emerald usa rom. There are software programs you can download to your phone or PC, or a number of online resources like https://www.marcrobledo.com/RomPatcher.js/
I took a couple of screenshots using the latest v7 testing patch in mgba on w11, I saw on your git (normally I play on mgba core on retroarch on my anbernic rg34xxh so it's harder to get a screenshot), I have uploaded them below:
So I got around to starting this, but must've been on the v5 update because I had the garbled party boxes. I updated to v6 and can confirm that the party box situation is resolved for both blue and red. One thing i did notice persisting between v5/v6 was, when throwing out your first pokemon...
Try Lemuroid for android. All in one (AIO) emulator that's preconfigured retroarch basically, super simple. if not in the store, try f-droid, or github
