I think it's little more than an aesthetic change. We don't even know if it leads to a room or not. I think you guys are over-analyzing this a bit.

I definitely prefer DS graphics, by a long shot. DPPt's graphics ran smoothly for the most part and looked great, hardly blocky.

It'll definitely come back. I'm not sure if they'll include post-Elite Four additions, but that'd be pretty cool.

I actually liked the fact that you could challenge the Kanto Gyms in any order you wanted to, and you had the freedom to travel through Kanto by whatever path you chose, rather than being limited to one path, like the main adventure. There were no limits, and that was one of the greatest...
