Usually, I just get pokemon that I like. In my last Emerald run, I had Blaziken, Cacturne, Flygon, Gardevoir, Aggron, and Salamence. I only got Salamence before the E4, so I had only 5 pokemon up to the 8th Gym. I only catch pokemon that I like unless I really need to use some weak HMs...

Volcarona, hit it with Bug Buzz!

The fact that the elemental punches are special (GEN 3, at least) which hurts Hitmonchan's usefulness is kinda there. Hitmonlee has a ATTACK stat with some good STAB moves to boot; he takes it.
