Love Lillie so much right now personally, she has a lot of depth in character and also has so much potential which is currently being addressed.

The meaning of the Pokeballs are that no one else could catch Ash's Pokemon even when they aren't with him. All his 'released' Pokemon still consider Ash their trainer even if their paths differ currently. He may return tbh, merchandising trumps all.

I agree, I felt it was important for him to win some and lose some so he could learn he won't always be on top but he could fight to remain there. His traveling to a new region anyways is always built on his sense of adventure so even when he wins he'd go to conquer somewhere else.

Not underestimating Brock but I'm just going with how the writers portrayed him and his characteristics. If they made Misty's water tournaments Contest/Performance like then maybe it would have worked but seeing as they didn't have any ideas like that back then it would not have made sense.
